Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)
Enjoyable, but a little too long!
Firstly, I did enjoy this movie. I think the cast & crew did a great job, considering the loss of Chadwick Boseman, & the subsequent dilemma of how to proceed. The tribute to him was lovely, the acting was good, & the costumes were beautiful.
I loved Shuri in the first movie, but she was so much more serious in this one (understandably so), & I don't think she should have become Black Panther, especially since she obviously had no desire to rule. M'Baku would have made a fantastic Black Panther /king) & Shuri could have continued as tech support! M'Baku at least, could already fight, but it seemed false that Shuri suddenly had all these fighting skills when she became Black Panther. (Strength & agility, yes)
Does that end scene mean M'Baku will take over as king/ Black Panther? 🤔
I love the idea of another hidden nation & an alliance between Wakanda & the underwater city, & Namor was great, although I don't understand how his little ankle wings helped him fly!
So, overall, an enjoyable movie, although very long - I will watch it again when it comes to steaming.
Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022)
Ewan McGregor is great as Obi Wan Kenobi.
I am really enjoying this show.
To all the people complaining about how much airtime Reva & Leia are getting & why aren't we seeing more Vader/ Anakin, it is a show about Obi- Wan Kenobi, & everything so far has been a key piece in his redemption arc.
Understandably, He is a broken man 10 years on from Order 66, & is content to sit in a cave & mope & not do anything about all the injustice going in around him, although it obviously cuts him up.
The rescue mission of Leia is what wakes him up again, & she can't help being a little scene stealer in every scene she's in!
I loved watching Obi-Wan evolve a little further in each episode. It was great watching him fighting in that rescue scene, & getting more mojo with every swing of the lightsaber!
I also loved the flashback scenes with Anakin, as they were very telling about his character, & how he could become Vader & I hope we get more of those in the final.
The Vader scenes were also great, & left one in no doubt about his evilness!
I can't wait for episode 6!
The Protector (2019)
Really romantic film.... loved it! 💕
Slight spoilers ahead ...
I loved this movie. I started to read the book, then got impatient to see how it ended, so I watched it on Passionflix.
Firstly, the casting was perfect, & the chemistry between the two leads was fantastic. Things moved along a lot faster than would be realistic, but who watches these things for realism!!
I was amused by Camille's hair - it would change from scene to scene eg she was in the house & had lovely ringlets; next thing, she was walking along the path & it was bone straight! By the time she got to Jake it was wavy again! She also managed to look stunning, even after she got hit in the face... I'm just jealous though....lol
Also...naked picnics.... I think this should be a thing...but I also want a hot bodyguard lol
It won't win any Oscars, but just a lovely romantic way to spend a couple of hours...💕
Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)
It's fantastic - don't let the long run-time put you off.
Firstly, I did enjoy the 2017 JL, as an entertaining, cheesy, popcorn flick but now, having watched this version....WOW...just WOW. It follows on so beautifully from Man of Steel & Dawn of Justice, & it properly feels like a DC film, darker & more edgy & violent. I'm a big DC animated fan, & this film reminded me of those.
To all those people complaining about the long run-time, it's been marked into 6 parts, so you can watch up to the next part & come back to it (if you can bear to do that) I only did that coz my hubby wanted to, but I could easily have watched it from beginning to end in one go.
I felt much more empathy with the characters in this version, as their backstories were further developed & you understood better, where their struggles were coming from.
Steppenwolf was a much better villian, & his motivations actually made a lot more sense in this version, with the addition of Darkseid. I really, really hope there's going to be JL2 with Zach Snyder at the helm, coz I want to see more Darkseid, & what a teaser at the end with Batman & co in that post apocalyptic scene! I gotta know what's gonna happen!!
And Henry Cavill's Superman in a black suit...yum.
My only negative, was, even though the effects were awesome, there was an awful lot of slo-mo action, & I would like to see more of Flash just being fast.
In summary, I loved it. Zach Snyder is a genius.
I can't wait till it comes out on DVD/ Bluray; I'm hoping there will be lots of special features.
The New Mutants (2020)
Good coming of age drama/action - not really a horror.
I enjoyed the New Mutant comics growing up, & was so looking forward to seeing the characters I loved make it to the Big Screen. When they said it would be filmed as a horror, I didn't think I'd be able to watch it, as horror movies freak me out. I needn't have worried, because while there are some creepy characters/ creatures, it did not have that horror atmosphere, & I wasn't scared at all.
PROS:
-The young cast, especially Dani & Illyana. Dodgy accents aside, they all did a good job of conveying teen angst & having to cope with their powers in an unfamiliar/ possibly enemy setting.
- I thought the idea of having them in an institution, & being in the dark about who put them there, & Reyes true motives, was good & was a good foil for the manifestation of Dani's power.
- The effects were pretty good.
- Dani & Illyana's powers were pretty awesome.
CONS:
- Why was there only one Doctor/ supervisor in the whole place, considering these kids have potentially dangerous & uncontrollable powers? There's not even any tech support, with all the monitors etc...
- Rahne's character is deeply religious in the comic, & constantly conflicted about her power. It doesn't gel for me that she would embark on a lesbian relationship, or if she did, that she wouldn't be apprehensive or have guilt about it.
- Why didn't Rahne turn full wolf in the action scenes? In fact she was hardly a wolf at all. I wanted to see more of all their powers.
Overall, flaws aside, I enjoyed the movie. If I hadn't read the comics, I'd probably have enjoyed it more. Apparently they aren't making any more movies about the New Mutants, which is a shame, because there's potential there. I'd love to see more of Illyana's backstory.
Death in Paradise (2011)
Still a great show, but needs some changes.
First of, all I'd like to say, I still love this show. I have watched it from the beginning & have all the seasons on DVD. The best seasons were the first 2, with the brilliant Ben Miller at the helm & a charismatic support cast. I also thought Seasons 3-5 were well done, & Humphrey a great character. Unfortunately Fidel, Camille & Dwayne are irreplaceable. However Florence & JP tried hard & have grown on me, & the introduction of a love interest for Florence was a good move, because I thought her character was a bit flat until then (I didn't like how that turned out though!!) Ardal O'Hanlon is trying hard, but he's nowhere near as good as his predecessors were. The mysteries are getting a bit repetitive, but still enjoyable. I'm looking forward to meeting the new detective, as I thought he was a good actor when he appeared in an earlier guest role, & hopefully he can bring in a breath of fresh air. HOWEVER, the real spoiler for the seasons 7 & 8 has been Ruby! She is extremely annoying & unprofessional, & gets away with way too much because of her relationship to the Commissioner. Dwayne was a dodgy cop but he had some character growth at least, & some great storylines. I will still keep watching, & hope there are some improvements.
