Apne (2007)
Lengthy but entertaining...
Film: Apne Director: Anil Sharma Cast: Dharmendra, Kiron Kher, Sunny Deol, Shilpa Shetty, Bobby Deol, Katrina Kaif, Victor Banerjee, Aryan Vaid, Divya Dutt Rating: ***
Anil Sharma's earlier films Gadar Ek Prem Katha (Love story) and Hero-love story of a spy had extra dose of Sunny Deol's screams. But contrary to them, this film has been able to keep him quiet and let Dharmendra's acting shine. His earlier films had very subtle tag lines but they were actually filled with action. He kept this film without a tagline and filled it with heavy weights and boxing!!
Baldev Chowdhary played by Dharmendra is an ex boxer, Olympic silver medallist. When in the US fighting for the World Heavy weight Championship, the betting mafia conspired against him and made doping charges against him. This brought him a fifteen years ban on his boxing career. He was passionate and loved the sport more than anything. He was devastated by the verdict. So he challenged the federation in US that his son Angad played by Sunny Deol would become a world heavy weight champion and bring him the pride back.
The opening scene of the movie where Dharmedra looks at the snow in his hands and compares it with life, saying life is like snow...we know its going to melt but the period it stays in our hands, is most extraordinary and wonderful.
The gloomy cold atmosphere brings in the grief in the ex boxer's life. The scene has the presence of his friend Ali played by Victor Banerjee and the way they meet and bid goodbye creates a bit of a suspense. I felt that Baldev Chowdhary was going to commit suicide. During the conversation, most of the shots were mid-shots which brought emotion and sensitivity that the scene demanded.
Cut, the next shot brings life into a Television studio. His friend is being interviewed and the suspense remains whether Baldev Chowdhary has committed suicide or he is safe. The interview continues and the story sets back in India.
For 10 years Baldev tries to make Angad a heavy weight champion but it doesn't work out. Angad finally gives up boxing to a career in agriculture. He does quite well but it is completely against his father's wishes. At times it seems that Dharmedra is being selfish in putting so much pressure on his son. But when one looks at the gravity, suffering and pain in Dharmendra's character everything looks justifiable. This shift of balance is well portrayed by the director.
Kiron Kher plays his wife and everybody in the house listens to her. She is strong, loving and instantly bonds with the audience.
Shilpa shetty is the traditional Punjabi wife of Angad. She is full of life and a loving and caring wife, daughter-in-law and sister-in-law.
Karan played by Bobby Deol is Angad's brother and would be Rock Star. I strongly feel that just to add glamour and liveliness in a story, there is no need to bring songs. What was the need to show Bobby Deol's rock star song with his left hand in the pocket, when it was already clear that he had some problems with his left hand from his childhood. I think the editor could have been more liberal and generous in his work.
Baldev feels that he is let down by his own people. He doubts his very existence. But an opportunity comes in the form of a Boxing contest called 'Boxing Giant' organized by a Television channel. Each continent would have their own representative and the winner would fight with the world heavy weight champion Luca Gracia played by Jonnie Brown.
The director did a smart work by bringing a real politician Amar Singh in the beginning of the film. So that the audience may feel that the boxer Luca Gracia is also real. He is fantastic and definitely more opportunities will come his way to play villains in films.
It's the treatment given to the film and the spotlight to the family coming together, respecting and fighting (in literal terms) to bring back the lost pride is the strong point of the film. It's also true that the fight back appeared endless. At one point I felt If Angad also loses to Luca Gracia, Angad's kid would volunteer to fight with him!
If R K Laxman had to make a cartoon strip playing with his famous Malgudi Days, looking at the bad hair days of the Deols, it would be 'Balgudi' Days.
I felt an immensely talented actor like Victor Banerjee is wasted. The music by Himesh Reshamiya is not at all soothing. But the film rises above all
the emotion portrayed by the macho men is worth watching.
Dor (2006)
A plain story which is spiced up with a good screenplay, cinematography, dialogues and Kukunoor's sensitivity as a filmmaker...
Film: Dor
Cast: Gul Panag, Ayesha Takia, Shreyas Talpade, Nagesh Kukunoor, Girish Kanad
Director: Nagesh Kukunoor.
Zeenat and Mira are women from two different worlds. Be it geography, culture, religion attitude, lifestyle or their names. In other words, its either black or white, the difference is tremendously visible. In spite of all these differences, there is a connection "a dor" and Nagesh Kukknoor has effectively trailed on it.
Mira played by Ayesha Takia, hails from Rajasthan. The mystic and forlorn beauty of the desert coupled with the orthodox ideas and views, reflects Mira's life, whereas, confidence and vigor is synonymous with Zeenat (played by Gul), the girl from lush and green Himachal.
Their husbands went out to the foreign shores to make things better at their respective places. The emotions of a newly wedded woman and her pain when he leaves out for work, the once in a month phone call by her husband which would last for a few minutes only, the desires , the love and longing in case of Mira is well portrayed. And the way she would climb up a stone to get clarity or network of the call is very apt in village as in Jodhpur.
While in case of Zeenat, she had to change the mind set of her in-laws about her. A very strong and determined lady. She takes everything to her stride.
The story takes a turn when Mira's husband gets killed and Zeenat's husband is held responsible for it. They used to be roommates. The only way Zeenat's husband could get out of the situation is Mira's letter of consent saying she has forgiven him.
So the journey begins for Zeenat. With nothing, but a photograph of her husband with Shankar ( Mira's husband), she begins the quest. The song, "ye honsla" is very fitting. On the way she meets up with a "Behrupiya", played by Shreyas Talpade. This character brings life to the entire story. He has done complete justice to the character. Very lively, the audience keeps asking for more.
The way they track the Shankar family and how Zeenat becomes Mira's best friend and helps her to shed her inhibitions is very interesting. "Imaan ki Udaan", as Zeenat puts it.
The best part of Kuknoor' film is his ability of not ignoring human emotions. The way the Behrupiya helped Zeenat and he eventually falling in love with her even after knowing that she is married is one example of it.
All throughout their friendship, she never gets the courage to confront Mira the fact for which she takes up the journey. The final outbreak of the film is a typical Kukunoor touch which he specializes!!!!!
In terms of performances, there is nothing great. Credit goes to the strength of the characters in the story itself and there is one scene where Kuknoor looks at Mira and the very look is so suggestive of his intentions. Kudus to the scene!!! A plain story which is spiced up with a good screenplay, cinematography, dialogues and Kukunoor's sensitivity as he tried to bring forth the issue of female foeticide into it.
Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006)
Coming of the new age sequel!!
"Kitne aadmi the", "Mogambo Khush Hua"; these epoch - making dialogues were from different directors. But once in a lifetime, it happens that "Jaadu ki Jhappi" and "Gandhigiri" coined by the same man get popularized and that too back to back. Bravo Mr. Hirani!!!
If the faith healer worked in Munnabhai, "Gandhi" worked for Lage Raho Munnabhai. Keeping the basics i.e. comedy intact, Hirani changed everything. I think this is the beginning of the new age sequel pioneered by Hirani. It is so similar yet so different.
Witty dialogues, well written screenplay, good comic timing, and well thought about characterization. Everything is so common. The only uncommon element is the plot and the backdrop.
It's the screenplay, all the scenes just flow and are well knitted. Nothing is enforced. Our Munnabhai falls for Jhanvi, Vidya Balan who is a radio jockey. Vidya has a good screen presence and amazing dialogue delivery.
The quiz contest on Gandhi, Murli Prasad aka Munnabhai winning the contest and his eventual entrance to the Mahatma Gandhi Library, are all very situational.
Sanjay Dutt reading n number of books on Gandhiji is a bit indigestible, probably that's the reason Gandhiji comes out of the pages and that too without spectacles!!! I was kidding
ever saw Gandhiji without Spectacles? It's same as Sanjay Dutt with Books!!!
Jhanvi arranges a lecture on Gandhiji for her grandfather and his friends at their place fondly called as the second innings home. Munnabhai being the professor and Gandhiji, one man rescuer.
It was at the second innings home that their feelings get mutual. Here is the entry of the cunning Sardar Lucky Singh!!! Boss what characterization!
He looks very convincing as the greedy builder. It's him that moves the story ahead as he sends them to Goa and takes possession of the second innings home through Munnabhai's right hand Circuit.
I must say that Circuit just steals the show. He has developed himself as an actor with great coming timing. In spite of repetition of the same character, he has managed to make people roll out of their seats. It's the powerful performance of the character that makes you feel the need of a Circuit in your life!! Jimmy Shergill and Diya Mirza do justice to their respective roles.
The phone-in programme on the principles of Gandhiji is a brilliant idea, very original.
"Gandhigiri is in full swing".Gandhiji tried to be preachy but the presence of people like Circuit and Lucky Singh diluted the effect making it a film with a vision. The show leaves you with nothing but a smile on your face and the theater buzzes with Pal, Pal, Pal
Pal Har Pal
Corporate (2006)
The promos of the movie said money, power, politics, I would like to add one more thing to it - just forget it!!!
This is not a comparison of page 3 with Corporate. The point is that the director himself did not want to get out of the Page 3 model.
Madhur Bhandarkar is a very economic person, he won't waste things, so he kind of used the research left after making page 3. There is a repetition of scenes, like the one with the peons in the office, defining their own version of Corporate. Wait, does it remind you of Page 3, where drivers talked!!
Everybody talked about Bipasha's looks in the film but I thought her hair was tied so tightly that one can have a headache anytime and stop thinking with the head. Now I understand the logic behind Bipasha taking her decisions from her heart it's the hair style which was kept in mind.
Certain scenes were kept for the sake of keeping them. Like the one where Mimisha, the aspiring corporate person and her lunch with her parents. One can't find a link to it. By the way what happened to Parvez, the informer? I think he should have been informed to take a revenge!! He disappeared suddenly! And Lillete Dubey has been wasted in the film. The film looked very crowded. There was no need of so many characters.
I think 'corporate' did the best for Rajat Kapur who was outstanding as the head of the company. Look I even forgot the name of the company! The characterization was good except for the choice of Raj Babbar. But the actors did not get a scope to perform to their abilities. For future projects, Bipasha and Kay Kay as a couple can be considered. I think the film badly needed a good editor!! The promos of the movie said money, power, politics, I would like to add one more thing to it - just forget it!!!
Krrish (2006)
I must say, for a change it's a refreshing Hindi film sequel!!!
Film: Krrish Cast: Rekha, Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra, Nasserudin Shah, Puneet Isaar Director: Rakesh Roshan
When I saw Hrithik dancing like a kangaroo in the song Dekho Pawan bhi...Chori Chori, Chupke- Chupke...I made up my mind that 'I will not watch the film'. But sometimes second thoughts are handy. The second half of the story is fun to watch. The hype of the Indian superhero is worth all its claims!!
Hrithik is a treat to watch in the second half. But Priyanka Chopra? She doesn't fit into the category of sweet, innocent girl which she tries to be in the beginning. "Just imagine", bahadur, played by Hemant Pandey had good comic timing!!
The film starts off with Rohit junior i.e. Krishna showcasing his talent as a painter. Later, realization of the fact that Krishna is a whizkid after the IQ test. Rekha being a protective grandma, takes him away from the eyes of the cruel, selfish word.
Although which part of the world they were staying, they kept it a hush - hush secret affair with the audience also!! Not fair, at least they could have told us!!
Krishna grows up in the armor of nature. Birds and animals are his compatriots, no wonder he dances like kangaroo!! Good logic!! Transitions are wonderful, like the one where Krishna's tear turns out into the Dragon head, establishing Singapore. Amazing display of stunts, Superman, you better Return!!
There is a surprise element in the film, which shows that it has a better thought of screenplay!! Unlike other superheroes, here Krishna, Christianizes his own name Krrish!!!
"When it comes to Hrithik, Roshan senior is very demanding", I thought of this line because the original choice of the actress was Aishwarya. Think people as where was this line used. Piyush Shah did an excellent job in the department of cinematography!! I must say, for a change it's a refreshing Hindi film sequel!!!
The Da Vinci Code (2006)
Worth watching for all those, who have read the book, mystery for who have not..positive side: people will be curious to know about it and read a good piece of work!!
The terms, like the secret society, holy grail, Sangreal, Rose Line are easy to comprehend for the people who have gone through the book. At least, one has the satisfaction that, all your life you have underestimated your visualization power!! Because for all that you had imagined while reading the book, are on screen. But what is the explanation for those, who have not read the book? What if there was no literary work? It seems, the film is made for people, who are more than casual audience.
The high points of the movie is its direction, cinematography and use of music.Paul Bettany and Ian Mckellen did complete justice to their respective characters of Silas and Sir Leigh Teabing.Robert Langdon played by Tom Hanks did his bit but more than that, he has something called 'reputation'which played its part. But there is one person in the film who was very consistent and was regularly irregular in giving a different expression. She maintained the same look on her face from beginning to end. Introducing Sophie Neveu who is giving new definitions to consistency. But her dialogue delivery and accent came in as her saving grace.
To bring an element of humour in a mystery is not an easy task, but the film has been able to bring what is called situational humour.
The unfolding of the mysteries came in a flash of second. Agreed, it may strike but the acting on the part of Langdon and Sophie while they were on Louvre was very cold.
There is nothing called 'bad publicity' and the controversy created, has been paid well.
