Above the Best (2019)
great example of true bravery
The amazing war documentary, Above The Best, is not only a unique look into the lives of soldiers in combat, but a story of courage and unity. The film tells the stories of soldiers and pilots and their experiences in the Korengal Valley through talking heads and footage that they personally took while in combat. The director's decision to use body cam footage to drive the narrative was a very creative choice that did a great job of portraying the reality and context of combat to the audience. The incredible editing of the raw footage captured by the soldiers really exemplified to me as a viewer the amount of bravery that is required of these people. You can see the dangers they put themselves in to protect other soldiers, some they may not even know, and it is truly inspiring. I thought it was incredible to see Apache pilot Daniel Flores talk about how his experiences have affected him and still affect him in his daily life. Overall, I would definitely recommend Above The Best as an extraordinary documentary about a story of heroism and teamwork.
Shrek (2001)
Perfect!
Shrek is a hilarious film that uses parody comedy to appeal to all viewers. The story follows an ogre, Shrek, who is on a quest to get his swamp back from an evil lord and gives a funny take on the friends he makes along the way. Along with tying in clever references to the real world, the entire story is a parody of the hero's journey, such as having a "mentor" character that is a talking donkey (Eddie Murphy) and through his heroic goal that is really motivated by a selfish desire. I would recommend Shrek to anyone who is looking for a movie filled with great laughs.
Empathy, Inc. (2018)
Chilling sounds make for a great thriller
This film was not only an exhilarating sci-fi thriller, but the exceptional work of sound designer Omri Anghel made Empathy Inc. stand out to me as one of the best thrillers I have seen in a long time. The film follows the protagonist Joel (Zack Robidas) who is investing in a virtual reality startup company that claims to provide a beneficial service, but things start to go awry when he uncovers the true use of the technology. Omri Anghel's expertise made everything from chilling screams to eerie silence extra startling, really establishing this film as a top tier thriller. Empathy Inc.'s use of creepy sound design definitely makes this film worth a watch.
