Sharp Objects (2018)
Book VS show
As someone who read the book first,I was really disappointed the minute they started derailing from the original story. However,I realized that Gillian Flynn literally worked on this series,so I now see these changes as her way of bettering the story. Also, now instead of having one story we were graced with two versions of the events. So yay! Anyway, I really loved the casting and found it just perfect! Amy Adams was incredible, she really highlighted how miserable Camille must be living in these conditions. I loved how they dug deeper into side characters like Alan, chief Vickery and Curry. On a different note, I imagined the little girls would be a bit more little you know but that could be just my imagination. I also found the graphics of the dead girls and the flashbacks and visions of Marianne so creepy, yet so perfect for the show. For the people who were complaining about the slow pace of the show, it's actually faster than the book's but good things take time,OK?, In terms of Richard+Camille, I prefer this version of their relationship to the one in the book. I liked how he had already knew about her cutting,so she wasn't really hiding much from him and liked how he seems genuinely interested in her. This show made me feel like I was in Camille's shoes and consequently made me feel miserable on her behalf. I also liked how they gave us a deeper dive into Amma's relationship with Adora,to the extent where at certain points I almost forgot what horrible deeds Amma has committed and just saw her as a conflicted and disoriented child. I did find it interesting that they didn't have Camille narrate the events as they were all from her perspective in the book, but then I guess had that they done it we wouldn't have been able to see what the other characters were doing in the meantime. Concerning the ending, even though I read the book, I was looking forward to it cuz I thought they'd give it more screen time, which surprisingly they didn't. I also didn't know how much they were gonna change it. For anyone who didn't understand it, Amma and her friends killed the two girls. Amma's motivation for it was that these girls were her little secret but then her mom began to develop interest in them and so they weren't hers anymore. She's also very hungry for attention and doesn't like sharing it so there's that. She also needed tiles for her mom's miniature bedroom and their teeth were perfect.
All in all, great show.
One of Us Is Lying (2021)
A good thriller to help you pass the time
Ok so from the moment I saw the cast, I didn't have exactly high standards for the show. It seemed like yet another teen drama involving a rich kids' school, a bunch of over the top depictions of high schoolers' lives. But now, I honestly don't know how to describe it. It wasn't a bad show. It had my mind running around trying to figure out who did it and I still couldn't guess it right. The characters had some depth to them; addy has a habit of twirling her hair when nervous and Bronwyn shakes her legs. I also liked the cinematics and thought they were nice. The plot too was very good. What I didn't like tho, is the lack of innovation it had. The story at this point has been worn out. It was used in 13 reasons why, control Z, and Elite, to name but a few. I also didn't like how they munched on the old stereotypes of the bad boy going for the hard working, good girl, the rich kids' parents don't know him well, the jock who's a closeted gay, like this is 2022, being gay isn't that big of a deal anymore . I didn't like how they didn't address certain elements. Like, Maeve says she went through lukemia, we never see her struggle with it, the bad boy has been gone for a while, we don't exactly see what he's been up to during that time, Addy has been stalked by someone but they don't tell us who it was. My point is, the plot had many holes and it would have been better if they'd have been a little but more creative, I understand that it's difficult when almost every single idea out there has been exploited . I did appreciate the fact that it didn't have much sex or nudity. I feel like Netflix turned this into a norm now for its shows, which is a shame.
Anyway, I recommend this show if you're looking for a quick binge.
Behind Her Eyes (2021)
Very addictive
So, I went to watch this show after I saw so many people say how unexpected the ending was,so I was determined on guessing the ending. I stayed vigilant thought the whole thing.Needless to say, I could not in any way, shape or form, foresee that ending. This whole show was mind-blowing.I watched it all in one day because I simply couldn't stop myself. It had my mind running around like a headless chicken,I was imagining so many plots,so many scenarios. The acting was spot on,SO freaking convincing.the music,in my opinion was also very well chosen. At first I was thinking what exactly did this Adele do for her husband to hate her this much? I assumed she probably killed her family.afterwards, I was almost certain she was the one who killed Rob out of jealousy. I missed out on so many clues however. This was a very well made psychological thriller, once I finished it,I was riddled with so many questions. It did teach me however a few lessons:never have an affair, and certainly don't befriend the man's wife, mind your freaking business as others' problems are not yours to solve, stay away from a person if everyone tells you to do so,and certainly don't show a person just exactly how perfect your life is,they might take it (literally). Another thing that blew my mind was that the most important character in the story and the one that set the whole thing in motion(Rob) was the most marginalized character. On the contrary to many people, the supernatural aspect of the ending didn't bother me much. It certainly was unexpected but that's plot twist for you. I felt sad for basically everyone at the end. They all were victims in some way.
All in all, it's definitely worth watching. If you are into shows that leave you puzzled and putting so much effort to understand, this is certainly something you should watch.
Control Z (2020)
totally something to see, worth the watch.
OK,so when I first started watching this my expectations were kinda low, partially because of the trailer that doesn't do the show justice.I thought this is gonna be just another teen drama, you know, just another show with filthy rich kids, huge parties, drugs, sex, and of course drama. It's not that it didn't have these elements, but the concept was different, and somewhat original. They kind of let you guess who the hacker was.yet, they still manage to surprise you at the end, especially when the whole story starts to unfold before your eyes.I grew up watching Mexican telenovelas, this is not one them.It has all the elements to a good show, the shooting, the plot, the unexpected twists, the perfectly placed music, the characters.Speaking of which, although they didn't focus on character development, and we don't get to watch the characters grow or change a lot, which is partially due to the length and the number of the episodes, but you do connect to most of them. And the acting was pretty good too. Some performances stood out to me more than others(Luis,Gerry,Raul,Sofia).
This show is basically "Elite" meets "Sherlock Holmes" meets "You" meets "13 reasons why".It makes you use your mind to try and figure out who the culprit is and leaves you wondering about what's coming next.I certainly hope there's another season, and hope it's as good as this one.Give it a try,it's worth the while.
Mimi wo sumaseba (1995)
So super duper cute!
So whisper of the heart tells the story of Shizuku,a middle schooler who loves reading books. She notices that every book she checks out of the library has been checked out before by the same guy;a certain Seiji Amasawa. She then sets out to find this mysterious guy. Around the same time, she meets this guy who she finds irritating and extremely arrogant. Well as you might've ready guessed, the arrogant guy is none other than Seiji and he turns out to be the opposite of obnoxious. This acquaintance changes her life, she finally found love and has set out to find out what she wants to do with her life.
What I love the most about Ghibli movies is how much you can relate to them. And I couldn't help but keep putting myself in Shizuku's shoes.I felt her joy,her sadness and embarrassment. I was smiling like an idiot throughout the whole movie, and I'm a grown ass human being. What I related to the most, however, was the feeling of being lost and the yearning for self-fulfillment. And I think the movie only gets more relatable by the time. And I gotta say it,man did I fall in love with Seiji.I hope I wasn't the only one tho (sorry, not sorry)
All in all, this movie is just soooooo cute!I strongly recommend it to any ghibli fan, anyone who's into good, adorable movies, and especially anyone who's going through a rough time
Eli (2019)
Very disappointing
When you make a huge fuss marketing your movie,it should be worth the fuss. However with Eli,it was the opposite. I saw so many websites -famous ones too - write about how scary it is and stuff so I was eager to see it. but I was really disappointed. Okay,I gotta admit, the concept was original, and I did get surprised by the plot twist - the part where he wasn't sick at all,and it was his parents behind it all along and that as fragile and vulnerable as he seemed,he was actually the one to fear - which is a good indicator. Still,it didn't present any new kind of horror, only the classical jump scares. and that ending!seriously!?he turns out to be the devil's son!!?I found that to be complete rubbish. and they didn't even bother make him look scary, they just put some red lenses on his eyes, and were like, you're good to go. I thought the ending was very lousy. As if no effort was put into it. And it was a bit confusing, cuz it was a lot of details to handle all at once. Had the movie not been marketed in the way it has been, and with such a trailer -it seemed so promising - I really would have tolerated its ending.
Mononoke-hime (1997)
Another ghibli masterpiece!
So,my first impression of this movie was"wow this is violent". You know, having seen "Howl's moving castle","my neighbour totoro" and "spirited away" beforehand made it seem intense. but you know that's the only way they would've been able to illustrate how senseless human atrocities are. The first time I saw it,I didn't make much of it,but it kept playing in the background of my mind. And that's where the genius of it lies,in my opinion. I mean, any movie that keeps you thinking afterwards is a successful movie. My takeaway from it was, other than the obvious "humans, stop messing with mother nature",it was most importantly the terribleness -if I may - of hatred and anger. What I learned from it is that when people feel hurt, they can become toxic if they choose not to forgive and hold on to their grudges. Like, that boar literally turned to a demon and was infecting whoever came close to him because he let hate get the best of him. Also,it made me realize that, indeed, like the movie pointed out, hate does feed on anger and fear. Also,it highlights the idea that each story has two sides, and we should really drop our prejudices in order to make room for understanding. All in all, this movie is a piece of art that you don't have to understand or appreciate from the first time, but that gets many messages through.
Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi (2001)
So creative,immersive and beautiful!
I decided to watch this one after having seen howl's moving castle,so I had high expectations and let me just say,it sure met them. I was really baffled by the amount of creativity in this movie,I mean just the variety of creatures it showed! I also found it very amusing; I mean I was smiling throughout the whole thing. It made me laugh to tears actually at a certain point when the stinky customer comes in. I loved the story, however I felt sad when we find out that haku was a river spirit, that blew the chance of any damn future romance between them after her going back to home. I also felt like I didn't get closure. All in all, great movie, i strongly recommend it to anyone in search of beauty.
