Windfall (2022)
Much More Than I Was Expecting
I usually check on a movie I'm considering putting some time into and was extremely wary of this one after reading some of the reviews. Glad I took a chance, mainly because I am a fan of Jesse Plemons.
Yes, it had the feel of a play due to the limited cast and location. Did it still deliver all the elements of a complex drama/thriller...Yes. Everyone in the cast played their part to bring together a dynamic interplay of characters. Jesse Plemons, as he does so often, takes a mediocre character and carefully crafts the role into a dynamic lynchpin to the story. If you are a viewer that enjoys watching a film that slowly builds to a dramatic finale, Windfall might be for you.
Unfrosted (2024)
Definitely a Niche Film
Rarely does a movie get me to laugh out loud, but Unfrosted did have a few moments of genuine laughter. This is a movie that appeals to a particular audience, particularly those with experience and/or affection for the 1960's culture. If you are unable to relate on any level to that decade, much of the humor will be lost. For those of us that remember the politics, personalities, fads and advertising of that era, it was a silly, fun walk down memory lane. In fact, seeing many of the cameo actors themselves brought back memories of previous enjoyable performances. The film might not be for everyone, but it was an evening's silly, fun and escapist entertainment.
Surrounded (2023)
More Thought then Many Modern Westerns
I was pleasantly surprised with 'Surrounded' since I expected the same hackneyed cliches which, yes, were there, but modified into a watchable movie. The director did an amazing job of balancing those very cliches into well portrayed performances by one and all. There were interesting character studies which included both the protagonist and 'the bad guy'. Is anyone all good or all bad? Depending on the circumstances, are we all capable of sliding between those two moral opposites? The cinematography was well done and landscape scenes downright beautiful. If you are willing to watch a western that not only has the gunfights but asks you to explore the motivations behind the action, give 'Surrounded' a try.
Los reyes del mundo (2022)
Young Actors Shine
My major take-away from this film is that the young men in the key roles were fantastic. Each carved out a believable, charismatic role which made the 'brotherhood' work and a film worth viewing. The sense of family that these impoverished youths depict is warm and realistic. Their youthful disregard for
the world around them is well depicted. The anger at the bureaucratic system that has no care for their situation is understandable. That said, I found the screenplay a bit random, disjointed and disappointing. Elements were presented with the potential for follow-up which never happens leaving the viewer to jump to the next scenario without a sense of closure.
Promising Young Woman (2020)
More Complex Than Description
Read the synopsis and liking a good revenge movie and intrigued with the user review I read, I gave the movie a try. I am totally impressed with the lucidity of what is actually a more complex storyline than it first appears to present. As the film progresses you might find yourself anticipating a predictable progression of events...just keep watching.
Wendy (2020)
Intriguing Start Fell Short
I was quite interested in this film for the first 15 minutes. I kept watching until the end hoping my expectations would be fulfilled, but sadly not. Confusing and unfocused with poor character development.
Big Kill (2019)
Fun, But Don't Expect an 'Open Range'
Actually liked this film, but you need to drop preconceived expectations that it is a serious western. I definitely felt a chemistry among the actors...it seemed most were actually enjoying their characters. A few good laughs and general entertainment value is what I got out of the film, and frankly, that's what I was looking for when I hit "play".
