Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
My cloners are on fire
Goddamn, they really are.
The reasons for this are manyfold, but simple.
While watching this mováy with my screaming spawns, I couldn't help but punch myself a teeny tiny little bit, every time I witnessed the blatant lack of chemistry between the young couple d'amoureux, the lovers, the starcrossed sweetlings from planets of waters and sands.
Such was my pain when witnessing the floating of a soon to be bisected fruit, that I knocked a container holding cold beverage for mine refreshment down far too hard on the fruit of mine body, which wasn't nice. The same thing happened when arms were touched, when sand was slandered, when bulky beasts floundered. I may have winced, but stop I could not.
So there you have some of the reasons for my very active decision to never use my cloners for their intended purpose again.
Kaze no tani no Naushika (1984)
Beautiful stranger
This movie is very strange, but its charme and strength lies in that very strageness.
The visuals are great. They ceartainly held me pinned to my seat when the plot didn't manage. The latter happened from time to time, but I don't have any major issue with it. The characters are great but felt a little two-dimensional at times. The soundtrack is great!
Spawn ratings: 7/10. (Cute bugs.)
Song of the Sea (2014)
And what a song it is!
As to be expected from Tomm Moore and team, this is another amazing film.
The art style is sweet and expressive, the soundtrack is a delight. The plot was great but felt strangely paced sometimes. The characters were nicely donce, even though it took me a bit to fully warm up to them.
Not that there was any more need to warm my heart after getting to glimpse those seals...
Spawn ratings: 10/10. ("I wanna be a selkie!")
The Secret of Kells (2009)
One of my all-time favourite animations.
The Secret of Kells to me is a masterpiece.
The animation style is quite unique and amazing. The soundtrack is fitting and beautiful. The plot is intriguing and I found myself emotionally invested in the characters in no time.
I'm glad this movie exists.
Spawn ratings: 9/10. (They love Pangur. And who doesn't :))
Thoroughbreds (2017)
Weirdly amazing
This movie was weird. It was also very well done imo.
The funny and the scary hold the scale, I liked the performances, the plot wasn't predictable and far from boring - had a great time, would watch again.
Killing Eve (2018)
Funny, scary, and very well done.
I loved the main characters. Both of them were well-written and the actresses did an amazing job.
It's not often that a show manages to amaze me like this. It is full of charme, wit, and seasoned with violence in a balanced sort-of way. Hard to describe, it's more of a feeling.
The plot was good. I wasn't able to predict a great many of the things that ended up happening. The visuals were great as well.
I was very impressed.
Mononoke-hime (1997)
Mononoke-hime
Visually breathtaking, this movie often had me wishing I could live in a forest like that. An amazing piece of art.
While the plot didn't always resonate with me - San settling for Ashitaka and giving up who she was until that point feels like a betrayal of her character, but well - all things considered, I really liked it. Still do.
The soundtrack is one of my all time favourites.
Spawn ratings: 8/10 ("scary but I want to ride a wolf.")
The Matrix (1999)
20 years later...
...and it's still so damn good!
Back as a kid I was beyond impressed with it. And I recently witnessed the same thing happening to my very own spawns.
Aged damn well is all I'm saying.
Ying xiong (2002)
I'm dreaming colours now
Visually speaking, this film is absolutely breathtaking.
It is simply beautiful. The sountrack only adds to that.
The martial arts are, pardon my French, gosh dang cool. Oof.
It took my western brain some time to get what was going on, but that is hardly the movie's fault. That being said, the plot and the characters really took a backseat imo because I simply didn't care enough while I was trying to cope with the beautiful bombardement of my eyeballs and ears.
A must for people who love movies as an artform.
Krabat (2008)
Crow noises
I first watched this as a teen, and it made me remeber the uneasy feelings I got out of reading the book as a kid. The movie managed to capture that certain lasting sadness and the underlying sense of danger that makes the book so memorable to me. Being able to fly and all of that cool stuff, but at what cost.
Anyway, the movie is far from perfect, but they did pretty good with the budget they had imo. The acting was ranging from OK to damn, Daniel Brühl! The soundtrack is amazing.
Star Trek Beyond (2016)
Good one
Emotion-wise it blew me away.
Beautiful visuals, a stunning score and awesome characters, ...some silly plot holes, but heyy...
I went to have a good time, and that's what I got out of it.
My little spawns are currently fighting over the right to play as Jaylah.
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
Let me grab my popcorn real quick...
...I did enjoy the show so far. I mean, not really, since it was filled with rather annoying screaming and flailing from the collective hivemind of manbabies out there, but hey. At least I'm very late to the party, so it has quieted down a bit.
No, I'm not calling anyone a manbaby just because they didn't like the movie.
You know the reasons if I do.
Anyway, I really liked The Last Jedi.
Stunning visuals, a totally unexpected plot with great and sometimes shocking character development, fun new characters - and boy, did it get me thinking! I seriously underestimated how deep those characters could be in the last movie - now I see them with new eyes. And with them I mean Rey, Kylo Ren and especially Luke. All three of them are so amazingly human in a movie about space wars and space wizards. So thank you, Rian Johnson.
I go down a star because the first viewing confused the hell out of my spawns. They still loved it but the subtle emotional undertones and what they really mean or could mean.. it's a bit much to ask of young kids. That being said we had a great time discussing the plot and what makes us human afterwards.
Captain Marvel (2019)
O Captain my Captain
I recently got to watch this newest addition to the MCU with my little spawns, and we had a pretty fun time.
The plot was kind of messy in some places, but the movie didn't really leave time to ponder on that stuff, either. I liked the visuals and the characters were cool, but I didn't feel as emotionally invested in the main character as I thought I'd be. Don't think it was Larson's fault, that - seems to me like it's got something to do with the Marvel formula, since I had similar experiences with Cap and Tony Stark before, even though the actors themselves did great. It's a problem with the writing I guess.
Anyway... I would absolutely watch it again, and so would the kids.
Hanna (2019)
Go girl
What can I say, I really liked it.
To me it felt like an upgrade compared to the 2011 movie, and I liked that one alright.
Especially the young actors stood out to me; I liked the action, the plot wasn't very predictable, and it was cool to see a flick where they didn't bother constantly fussing about the female physique. The main protagonist is a young person struggling with things that come naturally when growing up, and then some, since she's rather special. That's it, and it's refreshing.
The only thing that bothered me every once in a while was the soundtrack. Wasn't for me, but it seems to me like they did think it through, and that's a ll that matters.
Overall I'd recommend watching Hanna if you're into action-packed stories about self-discovery, growing up, and survival.
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)
All the feels
Two words: loved it.
The feelings I got as a kid? Rekindled. The new characters? Awesome! The old characters? Oh yeah!
The visuals were amazing, the plot got me intrigued. Got no complaints about the acting, it all seemed to fit the individual characters imo.
Out of all of them, Rey definitely got to me the most. Her longing for a place to call home and for people to call her family and belong with is something I can understand, so I felt for her. I thought she was cool on screen, but you should hear my little ones - they were practically gushing about her (still are), and well - that sealed the deal. A new hero has risen.
I DIDN'T like the rathtar stuff, but that's all I got for negative stuff. The rest blew me away.
