If you're 12, you will love it

Plotless teenage melodrama, drink up and you might enjoy it.

ABOUT MY REVIEWS:

I do not include a synopsis of the film/show -- you can get that anywhere and that does not constitute a meaningful review -- but rather my thoughts and feelings on the film that hopefully will be informative to you in deciding whether to invest 90-180 minutes of your life on it.

My scale: 1-5 decreasing degrees of "terrible", with 5 being "mediocre" 6- OK. Generally held my interest OR had reasonable cast and/or cinematography, might watch it again 7 - Good. My default rating for a movie I liked enough to watch again, but didn't rise to the upper echelons 8- Very good. Would watch again and recommend to others 9- Outstanding. Would watch over and over; top 10% of my ratings 10 - A classic. (Less than 2% receive this rating). For Lifetime Movies for Chicks (LMFC), drop the above scale by 3 notches. A 6 is excellent and 7 almost unattainable.

I am a sucker for slow evolving plots, but this was asinine.

Unbalanced and one-sided
13 March 2024
My son went through a program with similar principles as this program. You had to work through levels. On average it took about 14 months to get through the levels and graduate and that's exactly what he did.

The program my son went through turned his life around. 10 years later he is a very responsible and successful adult. I don't think it would have happened without the program.

This documentary is completely one-sided. I am sure that there are things the program did wrong and it probably is not fully comparable to the one that my kid went through. But you need to have balance in a documentary and not present everything from one side. This is not really a documentary but a student's advocacy film.

For example, in most of the video of apparently bad situations, there is no audio. We don't know what the kid was doing or saying and we don't know the build up that led to the outcome on the video.

Right out of the gate you're losing stars. This dude went to the University of Virginia and was in the US for awhile and is German but he doesn't speak English? So I've got to watch subtitles to know what's going on? Ridiculous.

Any show with subtitles should advertise as such. It's an entirely different viewing experience having to read captions the whole time. Horrible.

I love humility and find it inspirational. There are boatloads of humility in this documentary. Very touching, very poignant, made me cry.

Boring and too much Boston.
1 March 2024
Bostonians are among the worst Americans. I know, I lived there. They edge out Philadelphians for that title.

Few things are worse than having to listen to a bunch of Bostonian accents. Learn to speak English like the rest of us.

Beyond that, the documentary is slow and plodding and boring. I invested 30 minutes and hoped for better but had to call in a day. If you have a connection to this event, certainly you will like it. For the rest of us, it's just meh.

Good but could have been better
17 February 2024
The movie was well produced and directed and choreographed. It just lacked a little something. Little details, like near the end when the protagonist was trying to escape after days and days in the wilderness, but her hair looked perfect. Come on.

Had Potential
1 January 2024
This movie really has an interesting and thoughtful storyline with little details that made it seem like it was based on a true story. That was nicely done. Somewhat shockingly, the music was out of an '80s or early '90s movie. It gave the effect of being more like a Lifetime movie. That doesn't particularly bother me but I just thought it was extremely interesting. You don't see that in movies today. And for good reason I think. People have moved past that musical style.

This was approaching a seven for me but didn't quite get there. The positive elements again were the interesting storyline and the tension among some of the characters and the development of the plot and the characterization. The drawback was again the music was a little off and the story just wasn't quite as compelling as a seven rated movie would be.

It was funny in the graduation scene how they were clearly attempting to announce the graduates in alphabetical order but failed. Sloppy writing there. Also after they announced about eight students whose last name started with "A" the principal quickly said congratulations to the class of 2015 without any kind of a segue.

Two Likeable People
27 December 2023
I generally don't like people.

These are two very likeable people. They are both funny and spontaneous and creative and entertaining. And the story is very heartwarming. And the documentary is done very well. What's not to like? Watch it.

Write an ending or admit you are no good
23 December 2023
Good actors in this movie, semi-interesting plot. It felt like watching the show Lost which was a good show but it was a TV show, not a movie.

All the suspense built up to a cop-out ending where the writer clearly couldn't figure out how to wrap everything up in a way that made sense.

Save your time and watch something else.

Nicely done
17 December 2023
This documentary fully explained the background of the Amber alert and two-thirds of the time was spent on the situation in which Amber was abducted, which I felt was appropriate. It was a touching documentary, wrapped up nicely at the end.

Peacock is garbage.
14 December 2023
The documentary is okay, and not extremely compelling, rehashing a story we're familiar with. But Peacock is garbage. In this short barely over an hour documentary they were at least 10 commercial breaks. Ridiculous.

29 November 2023
I was abducted tied up and forced to watch this movie by my girlfriend. I actually kind of liked it. Almost gave it a seven which is coveted on my scale. It's at least a 6.5. Vince Vaughn almost always makes me laugh and entertains me, and Reese Witherspoon is the object of my affection.

Better than expected...
29 November 2023
... But of course my expectations were low given the 4.8 IMDb rating. But this movie was better than a 4.8. For one, it was a unique take on the Amityville storyline. For two, it had Jennifer Jason Leigh. Love her. And for three, it was reasonably entertaining without major gaffs.

In the Amityville universe, I have only seen the original movie, the 2005 (or so) remake, and this movie. I believe there are at least three or four other movies with Amityville in the title. This movie made me think how interesting would be to see a single movie that goes through a timeline of the different families that lived in this house and their experiences.

Only weak people join cults
25 November 2023
This was an okay documentary, not as good as some others in covering cult situations. The thing that really jumps out at you, is that only weak people fall prey to cults. That may seem obvious, but the documentary, along with others that I have seen on other cults, really brought this home for me. Have some freaking self-respect and intelligence and don't fall for a cult!

Entertaining
23 November 2023
I just rewatched this and didn't realize I had rated it a 7. This time I was thinking more like a 6. In any event, I apparently enjoyed it more than most. It is slapsticky, which isn't usually my genre, and it certainly not Citizen Kane, but it is entertaining and Cameron Diaz is not super hard to look at.

Cute, tingly, fun

I am a curmudgeon who doesn't watch many Christmas movies. I have no idea why I watched this, except Amazon kept pushing it in my face on my home screen on my Fire TV. Anyhoo, I'm so glad I did. It was fun, it was cute, it was tingly, it was emotional, it was irreverent, it was well done.

Would watch over and over; top 10% of my ratings 10 - A classic. (Less than 2% receive this rating). For Lifetime Movies for Chicks (LMFC), drop the above scale by 3 notches. A 6 is excellent and 7 almost unattainable.

Mediocre
17 November 2023
This movie seemed to lack a coherent theme or point. Just kind of scattershot in its approach. Plus Woody Harrelson is a despicable human being and an even worse actor; terrible choice for LBJ.
