Who the #$&% Is Jackson Pollock? (2006)
Interesting personal story & look at the "Art" world
This documentary tells the story of Teri Horton's crusade to get her $5 garage sale find certified as a genuine Jackson Pollock painting. I found myself really enjoying her feisty, earthy spirit, and contrasting it with the attitude of the "Art" world, which has been so dismissive of her claim, because it comes from outside their commonly held standards and beliefs. The contrast between her truck drivin', swearin', fried chicken & beer, trailer park life and the rarified "art world" people she was dealing with is both striking and funny. I must confess that, along with Teri, I knew very little about Jackson Pollock. Seeing this movie has impelled me to find out more about his interesting life.
What the #$*! Do We (K)now!? (2004)
Not your average movie
I give this movie high marks for being original and thought-provoking. It's clear from reading the comments that your beliefs going in have a huge effect on what this movie is to you. I did find the special effects to be over the top sometimes, and felt they tried a little too hard to amp up the "WOW!" factor to in an effort to grab the interest of the average person who isn't all that interested in physics. (Ten minutes into the movie, my nephew commented that the editor must suffer from Attention Deficit Disorder) And I did think the "human interest" story line was a little heavy-handed and intrusive sometimes. That being said, I really enjoyed the experience. I don't think science needs to be boring, and watching it was great fun! I think many viewers may have the same reaction I did-- now I'm going to look up some good books and get more real information on the subject...
Vertical Limit (2000)
Another Hollywood formula movie...
Hollywood makes some GREAT movies, but much of the time, the money is just too easy in making formula movies. This could have been a great movie. The real climbing involved in ascending K2 is VERY dramatic and difficult. Unfortunately, this movie really has nothing to do with real climbing, and just settles for countless scenes with people dangling over yet another cliff. And of course they have to haul explosives up the mountain so they can have the necessary Hollywood BIG EXPLOSIONS...Go see "Everest" in the iMax theaters, to see a real climbing movie...
