Lantana (2001)
I'll see anything Anthony LaPaglia does. This film is smart, real and
best of all, different. The story is so well formed, weaving connections between the characters that tie everything together. The murder is really secondary to what's going on with everyone involved. Really, really well done.
Heist (2001)
Holy Crap!!!
This is so bad, it's embarrassing. The dialogue made so little sense, I got a headache trying to figure out what the characters were talking about. Here's a sample: "He's so cool, when he sleeps, sheep count him"; "She can talk her way out of a sunburn"; "Cute as a Chinese baby"??? What the H. E. double hockey sticks are they talking about??? This movie is a disaster from start to finish. Mamet's best film was The Edge except he didn't realize it was a comedy. Do yourself a favour, don't even rent this dreck!!
The Gift (2000)
This is a stylishly directed, visually affecting, intensely frightening film.
The eclectic cast ranging from teen TV sirens (Holmes) to some of the big screen's best (Blanchett and Swank) makes this film worth watching. Although at times completely predictable, The Gift does exactly what you want it to. It scares the bejeezus out of you! The setting couldn't be creepier and Giovanni Ribisi is one scary mother!
Rat Race (2001)
Ugh! So bad! So lame!
This film is an embarrassment to the entire cast. What was Cuba Gooding thinking? Here's a tip. Watch the first ten minutes (if you can stand it) then skip to the end to confirm you've missed nothing. If you've already watched this entire film, rent Memento to restore your damaged brain cells.
House on Haunted Hill (1999)
Really, really bad
So disappointing. Terrible acting, stupid premise, totally lame dialogue and not a scary scene in the entire flick. How did they get Geoffrey Rush to take part in this garbage? Famke Janssen used the "f" word in every scene she was in. By the end of it, I was hoping they'd all be killed!
