Dorian Gray (2009)
Second Best Dorian
We had a festival and this came in second after the 1945 version. Ben Barnes is the best Dorian, excellent at both innocence and corruption. The cinematography is wonderful. His final girlfriend is modern for her time, lively and full of personality. The flaws a very weird interpretation of Lord Henry from Colin Firth, so nasty it's hard to believe he can influence anyone. There are some sleazy sex scenes that cheapen the film, and a ridiculously over the top portrait, drooling maggots and lurching out of the frame.
Venetian Bird (1952)
Watch it for Venice
Not a masterpiece but a perfectly decent little thriller, good plot, good cast, good direction and a glorious celebration of all aspects of Venice.
American Playhouse: Who Am I This Time? (1982)
Utterly delightful.
I show this film to whoever I can. It's heartwarming without ever being saccharine. Walken and Saradon are marvelous together, the script is great, the evocation of the small town theatre group perfect. There are several uses of the play within a play theme, all of them perfect. I especially loved the game played with The Importance of Being Earnest.
Performance (1970)
Fabulous
Decades later, this movie is still ahead of its time. It's a cinematic marvel and metaphysical mindbender. James Fox gives one of the best performances ever as Chas, and Jagger is wonderful as Turner. The film is sensuous, funny, frightening and utterly gorgeous. It's in my top 5.
