Could yave bern an interesting plot, but the story was poorly developed.

JJ Abrams has managed to drain the life, the spark, the joy that was the original series, and to a less extent, the spin offs, and re-animate the hollow corpse into a blundering zombie of a movie.
Nothing original, this travesty could have had the title and characters names changed, and it would have been indistinguishable from any of a dozen sci-fi action movies from the last 4 years.
The awe and joy of a possible future, the thrill of exploration, the wonder of the universe is totally lacking in this film. Scientists the world over have credited Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek for inspiring them to go into the sciences, because they wanted to help create the world he envisioned. This movie will inspire no one but insipid directors and bean counters.

What? Someone couldn't rewrite the script?
Brad Pitt as a Viet Nam Vet? Did I miss something? The Gulf war is 10 years old now folks. I'm 40 and I don't remember Viet Nam for squat.
Watch the scene with Brad Pitt and Robert Redford discussing "assets".
Base ball cards? Brad Pitt was lost in that scene. There's a reason Robert Redford is still in demand into his 60's. Pitt does well...80% of the time. He's good, but he's no Redford or DeNiro.
BUT...a third of the way into the movie it started to pick up really well.

At the end, do you really think the US will take helicopters into China without the authorization of the President? That is SO hollywood. We'd be looking at MAJOR war. Remember Carter just trying Helicopters in the desert?
Maybe I spend too much time on the Washington Times, and the WP. Maybe Hollywood directors and writers need to be a bit less isolated.

30 years later, same debate.

Watch this movie, and reflect that 30 years later, we are having a similar ethical debate on stem cell research, and the use of aborted faetuses to cure diseases.
Further reflect on recent cloning advances. What if you could clone a human, with no brain? (It is an unfortunate condition that occurs occationally in humans. The offspring die shortly after birth.) Would it be moral to use their bodies to extend your life?
