Velocity Trap (1999)
I do not know about the velocity... but i do feel trapped...
a lack luster movie filled with the same old story we have been seeing since the dawn of B sci fi movies. a cop was set up and now is being punished by being shoved onto a monetary cargo ship that is about to be hijacked by "trained" (ha) thieves. well, you can guess what happens from there. sad thing is that they really spent some money on this movie, making the effects better then average for a B film. the directing is a little more then fair for the budget, and the acting is about as good as you can get on this type of movie. Oliver Gruner got away with not being dubbed over, but his english still has not improved, making it very hard understand what he is saying. and we have to see oliver dancing around to opera in his underwear... which is good for a laugh... and a scare. Apart from the effects and few action scenes, the movie is basically nothing. jabber, no dialog, and that comes from a bad plot with a script that suffers from weak writing. its ashame they spent so much money, and then did not bother to get a good script. another bad film for action/sci-fi junkies to rent on the weekends. so if you see it, rent it, for the effects if nothing else, which are fair as i said, but do not exspect to see a wonderful film.
Rent aliens or die hard instead. And for gods sake, do not bother buying this thing.

Dark Angel (2000)
Another show with a Harsh Realm future???
And now up to bat, James Cameron, can he do it? Dark Angel is a show basically about a genetically enhanced super vixon, who runs around using her special abilities for the good of mankind, while being hunted at the same time from the people who originally created her. This show has been the first one up to the sci-fi plate since the untimely demise of a much loved viewer show called harsh realm. The pilot is fairly well directed for a tv show, (even though its not directed by james cameron) it gives the viewer alot to look at, even though the post apocalyptic scenery is getting a bit tiresome. The big question is wither or not this will get the chance to make a mark on our late night viewing schedule, but look at it this way, if it gets the boot, then sci-fi is almost a sure bet to pick it up. My advice to everyone is to give it a shot, we need good sci-fi shows on tv.
U-571 (2000)
trying to keep afloat... and they do
Incredible, an original story for once. an unexperienced submarine crew is put in charge of the task of recovering a secret Nazi encoding machine. There is no other way to say it, this movie is enjoyable to watch, but the entire cast seems like they are very nervous. Every time you look at them they look as if they are afraid of doing something wrong. Especially Harvey Keitel, who looks as if he was kept in a box without food or water until they pushed him in front of the camera and forced at gunpoint to spit out a few lines. As me and my friends were watching this film, we were just waiting for Gene Hackman to pop out of one of the pipes and start barking orders at all of the crew. How they ever managed to stay underwater so long in such a tight confined space, and not have a heart attack is a mystery to all of us. My suggestion to the actors is to take some Prozac before you come on set. My suggestion to the audience is to watch this film and enjoy it for what it is, but also watch it a second time and crack jokes throughout the movie with your friends.
Next Friday (2000)
Next Friday? living up to the original.
Ice Cube once again shows us his writing talents by giving us a great movie to see on Friday. And even though Chris Tucker is not there, the new characters make up for the comedy with loads of funny, stereo-typical humor that just makes you laugh your butt off. The incredible part is how the pacing of the film is kept up, always offering something new and interesting to the viewer. I would have to say this is a great movie even though the directors changed hands, I think Ice Cube has kept this movie his own. Will there be another Friday? Bank on it.
