It took me this long to watch this because I never read the entire book. I was so appalled by the excerpts I read in the Times magazine section and Cosmopolitan magazine that I was prepared to ignore it altogether. However, it was the actors who drew me to this. They mostly did not disappoint.
Joanna Whalley should not have had such a little-girl voice by this time in Scarlett's life. Scarlett is 28 years old in the opening scene and had definitely grown up a bit from the time in the original novel. Her practical intelligence had grown and become more sophisticated, but why wasn't her hair the right color? Not to mention that by 1994 they could have given the actress green contacts.
I never thought that I could accept any other actor as Rhett but Timothy Dalton was excellent. He gave all the suave sophistication he would have continued to give as James Bond along with the emotion Bond never shows. It was evident that he was enjoying this role and he nailed it.
The rest of the cast was also good, particularly George Grizzard as Uncle Henry, a character missing from the original film
The author seemed to have forgotten a number of things from the original book, such as Gerald having been the youngest of 12 children. No way would his mother have been alive at this point; she would have been more than a century old. Nothing was ever said about the relationship between Gerald and Pierre Robaillard, so why did Alexandra Ripley decide that he held Gerald in such contempt? Why did she kill off Mammy so early? Not to mention that Anne's death was just too convenient.
Scarlett and Rhett still had their defense mechanisms, though, which kept them apart from each other through the six hours of this sequel. I'm not sure I approve of how it ended.
Good location shooting and kudos to the costume and set designers for their excellent work.
