Cinderella II: Dreams Come True (2002)
Walt Disney must be rolling around in his grave
I don't mind the sequels for the modern films, (example: The Lion King) but the Disney-Disney movies, the ones that were directed and produced by Walt himself (example: Fantasia)should be left alone. all these sequels! Roy Disney must be running out of ideas.
The Great Mouse Detective (1986)
easily the funniest Disney animated film
next to Alladin, I don't think I ever laughed this much at a Disney animated movie. Some of the scenes are downright hilarious! memorable moments include the "let me be good to you" scene, and Basil sitting on his Violin. watch this movie for a real, good laugh!
The Mummy Returns (2001)
this can be viewed as a totally seperate movie, and not a sequel
This Movie was awesome! I only saw it half an hour ago. this movie was exciting, emotional, and suspenseful. the sword play, the instince action, the love between the O'Connells was very realistic, and it adds a nice touch to the movie. I won't spoil the parts that show this, how ever. and the visuals were so cool on the big movie screen. I'd buy another ticket just for that.
Rush Hour 2 (2001)
great stress reliever
I laughed my head off at this movie! even when I was under a lot of real-life pressure! the interaction between tucker and chan made them the perfect odd couple. even though I'm white, I still laughed at the "when stuff happens, white people ain't that cool" bit. in fact, I find my self watching that scene twice in a row before moving on! and don't forget the hilarious outakes!
American Pie 2 (2001)
kinda crosses the line in a few places
this movie was funny, i laughed out loud several times during this film, but some of the sexual jokes went way, WAY too far, and although they were funny, at the same time they were repulsive. the only clean joke was the trombone gag. I laughed my head off at that.
Shrek (2001)
funny movie, although a tad bit predictable
This Movie was Hilarious. the obvious disney spoofs make it funny. it even spoofs a walt Disney World Attraction(see if you can guess what that is!) the problem was that whan I Found out why fiona doesn't like to be out after sunset, I saw the ending from a mile away. but anyway, the Ogres in this film don't really look that ugly, only the green skin lets you tell the differance(except for maybe the shape of the ears) but still, a funny movie
Fantasia (1940)
"walt disney's Masterpiece" indeed!
Many Disney Movies have been dubbed "Walt Disney's Masterpeice" but few are actually as worthy of the title as "Fantasia"
when I saw this Movie in the theaters in 1990, I thought it was a new release! The color, the overall "feal" to the movie, and the music! classics almost everyone knows, like "tocatta and fugue" by J.S. Bach, or the "Nutcracker suite" and "dance of the hours", and of coarse, "the sorcorer's apprentice" My most favorate segmants were the last 3. I like how they passed through the day in Beetoven's "pastoral Symphony" and the following "dance of the hours", and the transfer from "Night on bald mountain" to "Ave Maria" was good, and "Ave Maria" is an excellant peice.
both Fantasia movies were good, but this one is still the best
Sûpâ Mario: Yosshî Airando (1995)
MILES ahead of the N64 game.
this game is very fun and entertaining. Much better than the N64 game(retrieve the super happy tree so we can terminate the storybook spell) this plotline of rescuing Baby Mario was alot more believable, and Baby Mario's crying sound is a LOT more tolorable then the "munckins of Oz" voices they gave to the N64 characters.
I also hear nintendo is planning to remake the game for game boy advance. I plan to get it.
Shriek If You Know What I Did Last Friday the Thirteenth (2000)
one of the funniest movies I have ever seen!
this movie was one of the best parodies I have ever seen!the endless spoofs and cliches had me rolling on the floor! it's not very often you can take the subject of murder and turn it into a farce, but this movie passed with flying colors.
The Mummy (1932)
classic horror
having seen the 1999 remake, I had a lot of fun pointing out the similarities between the two movies, as well as the differances, which helped me enjoy this version a lot. if you've scene the 1999 remake first, you'll recognize the names such as Imhotep, Ardeth Bay, and even Anck-su-namun, but that's where the similarities end, and I'm not talking about special effects, because that is a givin. if you want a fresh outlook on the story of Imhotep with the same story but differant enough to seem new, watch this movie.
Jane Austen's Mafia! (1998)
rips off the Godfather so much it's not even funny
This movie is not a parody, it's a rip-off! This movie doesn't spoof the godfather, it rips it off! every scene is carried out just like in the origional movie: the killing spree during a church ceromony (except that it's a wedding instead of a baptizmal), the murder at the restaurant, the family reunion, the "did you kill those men?" "No.", the "kiss of death", and what isn't ripped off from the godfather is ripped off from other movies: The exploading car and the casino scenes(casino), and Charles Dickens probably turned over in his grave at the oh-so-painfully-obvious Christmas Carol rip-off. This entire movie was a sloppy conglomeration of other movies. The only barely funny spoof that WASN'T a rip-off was "run, florest, run!"
Fantasia 2000 (1999)
A DVD REVIEW AND A NEW PERSPECTIVE
I hadn't watched the original for awhile before this, but after seeing "Fantasia 2000" I knew I still liked the original better, and opon watching the "making of Fantasia 2000" featurette on the DVD, I was outraged to learn that they deliberatly tampered with the music to accomedate the stories, and also that along with "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" they also originally planned to keep the "Nutcracker Suite" and "Dance of the hours" segmants from the original in the movie, but for some wierd reason, they were dropped.
I will talk about the peices that have counterparts in the 1940 original and how they compare. The rest of the peices are what makes this film enjoyable.
1. Beetoven's 5th symphony: the 1940 original gave us ALL of Bach's "Toccata and Fugue in D minor" wonderfully set to orchestra and with truly abstract images of violin bows and and strings moving in syndication with the music. Fantasia 2000 gives us three minutes of beetoven's 5th symphony, with a bunch of triangles battling each other.
2. Pines of Rome: it could be loosely tied to Beetoven's "Pastoral symphony" from the orgional, but the Pastoral symphoney gave us a Roman mythology setting in a beautifully animated colorful country with centaurs, cupids, pegaseses, you name it. it obviously required a lot of research. But in Fantasia 2000, all we have is a bunch of flying whales!
3. Saint Sean's "Carnival of the Animals": obviously inspired by the "Dance of the Hours" segmant from the orgional, but TOO DAMN SHORT!!!!!!!
4. Elgar's "Pomp and Circumstance": as quoted in the "making of Fantasia 2000" segmant: "fortunately, there's more to it than what we've all heard before" this segmant was actually pretty damn good. It was hilarious with a good Disney ending, and it was a suprise to hear differant parts of "The Graduation Song", and having Mickey Mouse send it off after congratulationg Leopold Stowkowski was a nice touch. seeing Mickey congratulate Leopold again was a real treat.
Finally, no. 5: Stravinsky's Firebird suite: the closing peice of Fantasia 2000 can be compared with the closing "Night on Bald Mountain" and "Ave Maria" of the original. The artists wanted to have a finale that gave the same emotional impact to the original finale. Well guess what? IT DIDN'T! Watching the monster driven back into hybernation and the congregation taking a peaceful forest walk at dawn always leaves me with a warm glow when I finish watching the original, but this dissapointing Firebird finale leaves me with a fealing of "what the hell was THAT?!!"
Zeruda no densetsu: Mujura no kamen (2000)
hint: think "Groundhog Day" and "The Mask"
Excellant game! This Zelda title takes Ocarina Of Time's engines further: Time never stops, even when you're in a dungeon, and the Three Day repeating aspect really makes this game quite differant from the other Zelda Games.
But, several classic favorites return to this game, such as the full classic Zelda theme, rehashed into more of an action peice then a march, and a lot of favorates from Ocarina of Time, such as the shooting gallery, and your trusty steed, Epona. you can use your bow and Arrow while riding her, and this time, the main feild is full of enemies. perfect for target practice. The music is not quite as involving as before, but it is still a pretty good game.
Zeruda no densetsu: Toki no okarina (1998)
What is it with Nintendo and their Video Game Women these Days?!
That's my summary for this comment, because that is the ONLY annoying thing about this game. I Don't like Adult Zelda's voice! it's even HIGHER then the voice she has as a child! fortunatly, My TV has volume control.
That aside, The rest of the game is great. I like Being adult Link. The ability to go back and forth through time puts an interesting twist on the "Light word/Dark world" Transistion they first explored in "A link to the past"
The music is fantastic! every location has music appropriate for the locale:
In the forest temple, the music really makes it fell like you're in an ancient temple abandoned for centuries and overgrone with vines.
in the desert, Spanish guitars and trumpets play.
Princess Zelda has a theme(Recycled from Earlier Zeldas)that plays on an Ocarina when she is a kid, and is fully orchestrated when she's an adult(she doesn't speak at all during the ending, Thank God)
If you spend a whole day in Hyrule Field, the background music takes on a peaceful tune and harps strum as evening sets in, then the music fades and a wolf howls, and the castle town raises it's draw bridge.
I could go on and on, but overall, this game is great, the traditional Zelda challenges and enemies take on a new look in 3-D.
The one downside of this game, unfortunately, is that it obviously set off a trend for Nintendo with their character voices. Listen to Princess(Peach) toadstool in Super Mario 64: she actually sounds like a Full-grown adult woman. Now listen to her when you Play "Super Mario Advance". and that's not all. In this game's Sequel, Majora's Mask, all the women coo like babies, and the men grunt. I rest my case.
Lost in Space (1998)
this is one culture I would not like to be a part of
this movie had good special effects, but some of the plots are hard to believe. first, the "setting aside of their differences" was nothing compared to Gene Roddenberry's Utopia vision from "Star Trek" infact, this global federation is still in conflict with other humans.in addition to that, this culture is still money-driven, for instance, Don West is "pulled from active duty" and drafted for a mission that will cut him off from his family and friends simply because he "endangered a $10 Billion spacecraft" and then, the original pilot is excused simply because he had a minor flu! whats more, the federation drafts a man with a FAMILY Who doesn't want to leave earth! sounds like a pretty crappy culture to me.
The Star Wars Holiday Special (1978)
be grateful it exists
It's not what you think! consider this "special" the run-off of the star wars series. Sence all the bad stuff was in HERE, it didn't make it into the movies! if george lucas had a few wild brainstorms, he obviously put them here, so he woudn't gamble with the movies why do you think we haven't scene Chewbacca's family sence? because george found out it was a bad idea! this special, actually helped the star wars series!
The Blues Brothers (1980)
the Music Numbers get in the way
the car chases are funny, the Carrie Fisher sublot is tolerable (good to see Carrie Fisher outside of Star Wars), but practically all of the music number are horribly out of place, and others just go on and on. for instance, a guy quits his job to rejoin the band, and his boss is angry at him until she suddenly bursts into song, then, the blues brothers go into a music shop to buy a piano, and suddenly we have a full-out Ray Charles number, and THE MOST annoying is the scene in the church. it just goes on and on! that annoying, repetive song goes on for 10 minutes, easy! the scene at the redneck bar was the only relevant music number in the whole movie, but it was pretty good nonetheless.
A Knight's Tale (2001)
the second half is better than the first
When the movie opened up with "we will rock you", that's exactly what I was expecting from this movie, but then a long came the gambler who lost his shirt(and his pants too), and I cringed when he sucked some dirt off his toe, and for a while the movie was kind of boring, and I was wondering what time it was, because I didn't have a watch, but then came the dance rehearsal scene, (THWACK!) and the comedy kicked right back in! and I was gripped till the end from that point on! so if you are willing to sit through some body humor and a little dragging, you will find that the second half is worth it.
Malcolm in the Middle (2000)
this certainly ain't "the simpsons"
Malcolm in the Middle is USUALLY very funny, but every once in a while, certain episodes pop up that almost make me want to hurl a brick at the screen.
Elemants I like: Malcolm's dislike of his Nerd class, Reese's Stupidity, Hal's mid life Crises, francis and the military school subplots(most of the time)
Elements I hate: I can think of only one: Lois, The Mother: cruel, unfair, harsh, and unsympathetic whatch the recant episode "evacuation" and you'll know what I mean.
Ghost (1990)
stands the test of time
sense comments are still being posted for this movie, more than ten years later, it's obvious that this movie stands the test of time.
"Unchained Melody" is a great song, of coarse, and this one has a big spiritual impact for me: Life after death, Heaven and Hell, it does a good job with those issues. when I heard the title, "ghost" I thought of a haunted house and dead trees and thunderstorms. you know, that sort of thing. but I was pleased that this movie proved to be quite differant. sure, it deals with a serious issue, but the comedy is always welcome. I did laugh during this movie, especially with Woopi Goldberg as the reluctant Oda Mea Brown. "Ghost" is another classic that should have it's own special anniversery re-release.
The Simpsons (1989)
"he had long hair and a lot of wild Ideas. his name was....I forget."
This show is very funny. what can I say about it that hasn't allready been said? well, I guess My favorate character, who is Homer. he cracks me up! a few of my favorate episodes include: "Bart on the road" and "the city of New York versus Homer Simpson".
The one major complaint I have about the show, however, is the religious side of it. the message they are convaying is basically, "Go to Church Or Go to Hell", or "if you don't go to church, you're evil" "Simpson Bible Stories" is without a doubt one of my least favorate episodes in the whole series. they've got it all wrong on the religious part of the episodes. however, I'm sure they're too set in their ways to give up the religious side of the show. of coarse, they do make the religious side of it Funny every once in a while, such as "Save me, Jebus!". It's jokes like that that sort of cancel out the irritating religious side.
House of Dracula (1945)
a good movie, but not very consistant(spoilers)
yeah, we all know the wolfman and dracula AND The Monster were all Killed in house of Frankenstein(think about it-the monster DROWNED. I don't think Frankenstein gave it gills) but they screw it up even more in the Abbott and Costello one. lack of continualty aside, I liked this Movie. John carradine might not be any Bela Lugosi, but his character of dracula was convincing enough. and that song he willed the girl to play? Downright bone-chilling!
Lon Chaney Jr. put on a good performance of the tortured Lawrance Talbot. A lot of people could Identify with him, and I'm pleased he didn't have to die at the end.
Glenn strange never got a major role in HOF and HOD, so I don't have a lot to say about his role, but was great to see Boris Karloff in the recycled footage from "Bride of Frankenstein"
all in all, a good movie.
Fantasia (1940)
"walt disney's Masterpiece" indeed!
Many Disney Movies have been dubbed "Walt Disney's Masterpeice" but few are actually as worthy of the title as "Fantasia"
when I saw this Movie in the theaters in 1990, I thought it was a new release! both Fantasia movies were good, but this one is still the best
The Lion King II: Simba's Pride (1998)
A sequel
I Like Most sequels, "Toy Story 2" and "Christmas Vacation" or "Empire stricks back" to name a few. just because a sequel doens't live up to it's predisaor doesn't nessecarly mean it's bad, but I do have a few gripes about this one. first of all, why call it "the Lion KING" If Simba has a daughter? Minor gripe there, and why did Zazu get stuffed into the back and only get 2 or three lines? and what's up with Timon And Pumbaa ditching "Hakuna Matata?" thats what made them classic!
Now, on to the good stuff. I liked the interaction Between Simba and Nala, and I was pleased that most of the origional cast returned(except for Jonathon Tylor thomas and Jeremy Irons, of coarse) plus a few others. It was great seeing the Elephant Graveyard again.
