More like the 3 Stooges than the Odyssey
10 June 2001
I was looking forward to seeing this well reviewed movie. Was I ever disappointed. Pros: The actors did a great job with the material they had. The ending was a lot of fun. The music was fantastic. Cons: The computer generated backdrops I found extremely irritating. Ulysses matched his famous predecessor in bravado but not in brains or bravery. I like characters that develop, that learn something, even in a comedy. I've seen this kind of slapstick a thousand times; it did nothing original, even though it feebly alluded to literature. Poor Homer. I give it a 2 out of 10, but only because of the marvellous Soggy-Bottom Boys.

Nurse Betty (2000)
9/10
an original dark comedy
10 June 2001
I hid my eyes during the very violent scene at the beginning, but I do think it was necessary in order to understand the trauma of the beguiling Nurse Betty. The title indicates who this film is about.

Nurse Betty weaves her innocent spell with "grace and poise" to quote Charlie. Everyone is drawn in, except Wesley (Chris Rock) who did a great job trying counteract her charms. Morgan Freeman contributes his customary dignity and elegance to this character driven comedy. 10/10 for original characters and loads of fun.

Pushing Tin (1999)
7/10
It's not about air traffic controllers and it's not funny.

This movie is about men and their testosterone levels. It's about men fooling themselves that their families are first when they will sacrifice anything to be top dog. Cusack (at the moment my favourite actor because of the honesty, intelligence and humour he brings to his roles) is a big fish in a small pond when an outsider (Thornton) arrives and shakes him up. The chaos that results from their competition almost ruins their lives. Taken as a morality tale against arrogance and pride, I think Pushing Tin does a better than average job. The ending is even plausible if you have an evolutionary view of human nature. It is possible that men like them could grow up, understand the error of their ways, become friends and voluntarily give up the role of alpha male. Isn't it? Watch this movie and decide for yourself.

An enthralling experience through the whole game. Supremely recommended and excellent graphics to add to an already masterful game.
