Long Gone (1987)
Absolutely STILL the best baseball movie ever
First, it's an absolute CRIME that I can't get a copy of this movie on DVD. I have to agree with the vast majority of reviewers who grant this film worthy acclaim.
Yes, the characters are dirty and visceral.... They're REAL. They're human beings with faults and flaws, and love of life and baseball.
Stud is absolutely a real hero. Sure he likes premarital sex and booze and playing rough. I don't know how much the reviewer above who thought this movie lacked moral character knows about real baseball players... but guys like Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth were FAR from angels. They were sexist, hedonists. They played ROUGH. They played so rough that they wouldn't be able to work in the framework of modern sports. But this movie isn't ABOUT the modern game, or modern society. It's about a bygone era. And there are reasons we should be HAPPY that those days are past. But to white wash them for entertainment purposes is revisionist history and TERRIBLE story telling.
HBO - PLEASE do something so we can see this movie again. Play it! Release it on DVD! SOMETHING!
NYPD Blue (1993)
better and better
These last 2 seasons with Mark-Paul are better than the series has been in years. Esai Morales excellently replaced the Arthur Fancy character which was getting tired. Dennis Franz gets better every single season; the show is so much about him. The Franz/Ross relationship is the single strangest strained character development, but if anyone can pull off an improbably script, it's Dennis Franz.
Just One Night (2000)
what a quirky sweet sexy tale
The story of a New York professor who flies to San Francisco to give a lecture, jump back on a place and fly back to NYC to get married. He meets a bevy of unusual characters on his day in San Fran, including the incomprable Aurora. They spend a strange and magical night together, with serendipitous coincidences around every corner. Totally unbelievable except for the one is a billion night...Just One Night.
Bikini Hotel (1997)
terrible...but naked
Gosh, what else is there to say? I bought it on DVD in a clearance bin for $2. It's nice to have a terrible skin flick like this for "bad cheesey-but-naked" movie night. This thing is totally sans plot development. It's hard to imagine dialog that's worse. The out-takes are fun, tho. The DVD is better than the video, I'd guess. :) The bonus materials are funny. I'm sure the cast had a good time making this, because they seemed like they were having fun. Heck, I'd be having fun hanging out with Julie Strain if she was naked. :)
