Bobby Jones: Stroke of Genius (2004)
Old style biopic with truth .
This film which carries no studio name could almost have been made by Fox or Warner in the golden age because of craftsmanship;but it tells the truth as they almost never did. It is a shame the people who promoted this so much seem to have missed an opportunity (hopefully the DVD is more successful).Of course release dates and all come into play ;and Caviezel's current fame cuts both ways . But it seems even golfers have ignored this film judging by the poor Box Office.Definitely in the same league as Seabiscuit ; with outstanding performances by all three playing Bobby Jones as well as a wonderful supporting cast . It is a very moving story when told with all the warts and problems to see.
Pearl Harbor (2001)
Humanity over History
While "Tora, Tora, Tora" is probably more technically correct, this film offers characters and situations (even President Roosevelt)that literally bring tears to your eyes. When I first heard the plot of this film I said "The Longest Day" had no love interest nor did "Private Ryan" ; but the absolute humanity in this film overpowers powerful special effects.I had serious reservations about the story line and the lack of historical accuracy(i.e. being extremely kind to Admiral Kimmell);but this film made a believer out of me.
The Bravados (1958)
Not your typical western
The first thing that let's you know this isn't what you expect in a western is Peck from the beginning seems more like his character in "Moby Dick" than "To Kill a Mockingbird" . Any movie with a twisted (and uncredited) performance by Joe DeRita ("Curly Joe") of the Stooges has to take off in strange directions . To give away too much of the plot would be cruel ("Sixth Sensish") . Ninety eight minutes well spent;still holds up after all these years (super cast of supporters);makes "The Searchers" seem normal.
