Grand Canyon (1991)
Best Dream Sequence Ever... "CBG"
I generally prefer movies that entertain rather than preach. Grand Canyon, for the most part, falls under the latter. Nothing in the film really enlightened me, but I thoroughly enjoyed all of the acting- definitely Mary McDonnell at her best. Also, just about every scene is directed to perfection. Kasdan creates what is perhaps the most realistic dream sequence of movie history. Not so much with Kevin Kline's dream as with that of Mary McDonnell. The way the scene quickly progresses into such bizarre, mentally over-bearing circumstances was magnificent. (If anyone can think of a better one, please tell me about it- and Yes, I've seen Kurisawa's "Dreams") This scene alone makes it impossible for me NOT to recommend this film- you should definitely rent it as a date movie! It should also satisfy anyone with an appreciation for good directing.
Rear Window (1954)
Not up to Hitchcock standards
As a huge Hitchcock fan, I had been predisposed to the belief that Rear Window would be an incredibly entertaining, mysterious, and suspenseful piece of film work. I found it to be rather the opposite. I am truly amazed that it impresses others with its "depth and meaning." Hitchcock's other films entertain, excite, and satisfy the viewer. Rear Window is slow-moving, meaningless, and anti-climatic. In my opinion, nothing about it was scary or suspenseful, so if you want a real thriller of Hitchcock's that's not "Psycho," I suggest "Rebecca," (1940). It was his only movie to win Best Picture, and it's a much better way to spend 2+ hours of free time. I feel the only other person who might share my sentiment is the IMDB staff person who suggested "Body Double" for those who like Rear Window- if you've seen it, you know what I mean!
Pam & Tommy Lee: Stolen Honeymoon (1995)
Big waste of time!
I don't see how anyone who sees this movie can seriously rate it a 10! It was way too short on Pamela, and showed practically nothing interesting except for the scenery of Lake Mead. It made me far more angry than aroused, and I don't think you could pay me to sit through it again. Put it on at your party if you want everyone to leave!
Orca (1977)
A great film for those with a passion for nature!
This movie is for those who like to see nature triumph against man. The story is not far-fetched by any means, since killer whales are extremely intelligent creatures. Orca see his mate and unborn offspring "murdered," and seeks revenge, like any human being would do. I find this movie incredibly entertaining. A definite 10 in my book!
The Mission (1986)
Missionaries befriend and fight to save indigenous people in South American jungle
Robert De Niro changes his South American slave trading ways, and becomes a missionary with Jeremy Irons and Liam Neeson. The Portuguese infiltrate the land of these people, and use them as slaves, despite the objection of the Spanish missionaries. They build a mission above the falls and defend it against impossible odds. The movie has great acting and great scenery. I like it because it is both emotionally depressing and uplifting. It is long, but all worth it!
