The Tao of Steve (2000)
fun film, great location
If I hadn't had a basic philosophy course or if I were a lot younger, I'll bet I would have missed a lot of the references. As it is, I probably missed a lot because I'm so old! Nevertheless, I enjoyed the carefree atmosphere of the story, the great setting in Santa Fe (love the opera part), and the decency/respect that finally wins the day. A lot better than many of the high-budget, special effects movies that have been produced lately.
Bounce (2000)
Boring
Gwyneth Paltrow did a great job of acting the grieving but conflicted widow but she went on and on. Enough already. There was no electricity or excitement in the acting otherwise, despite the alleged off-screen romance of the leading couple. It was too "low energy," very flat acting. Ben Affleck cannot seem to get beyond appreciation of his self-image. I was very disappointed since the movie had generally received good reviews. Maybe because the theater was hot, but I fell asleep!
Frequency (2000)
Surprisingly entertaining
I hadn't read reviews of Frequency before seeing the movie. I didn't expect much because it was at our first run theater for a very short time, maybe because there was little gratuitous violence, no overt sex, the language was modest, it involved an intact family. But it was gripping, challenging, emotional, and surprising. You should see it.
The Limey (1999)
Good forum for Stamp
The story line was a bit tedious, dragged in the middle. The cinematic techniques were effective and Stamp's acting was enjoyable. Fonda, on the other hand, seemed flat. Maybe he was trying to be a satirical stereotype but it didn't fit with the tone of the movie.
Mononoke-hime (1997)
graphic artistry exceptional but story content weak
We felt privileged to be able to see this very artistic expression in our remote area. The animation is beautifully creative but I felt the story line was disjointed; it felt written on the spot. Maybe some of that roughness is because of translation or cultural differences. It definitely worked hard at resolving a LOT of conflict.
