Sin City (2005)
Excessive Violence
I'm not a comic book fan but read reviews that stated even if I wasn't I could get a lot our of Sin City. I really wish someone would have warned me about the excessive, gratuitous violence found in Sin City. The film was physically and emotionally exhausting. The members of the audience that were laughing certainly weren't paying enough attention to the decay of humanity found within. Luckily I didn't end up with nightmares as I went to see a matinée. I had to decompress with more than an hour of South Park to erase the horrors of Sin City. Even though blood and guts were portrayed in colors other than red it was readily apparent that this was indeed the innards of another person. The one redeeming part of the film was the director's fascination with some amazing female buttocks.
Bowling for Columbine (2002)
Well done - disturbing and thought provoking!
How can anyone really expect Michael Moore to explain why our society is so messed up? I re-hashed the movie for hours with a friend and we can't specifically point to any one thing that is the problem. It is an extremely complicated issue.
The film was classic Michael Moore. Not necessarily ground-breaking, but putting all the images and facts together in one place is definitely disturbing and thought-provoking. I truly believe that making people think is what he does best. We seem to have forgotten how to think - perhaps that is what has lead to our obsession with guns and killing. We don't need (or want to) think, we just react emotionally.
Escaflowne (2000)
Pretty darn predictable
This movie was overly romantic and dramatic. The drawing of the women was completely inappropriate and the story lacked so much. The review I read in the local rag made it sound like I shouldn't see it, but I guess I just wasn't listening to what was good advice. This was not worth the time and money spent on it.
Der Krieger und die Kaiserin (2000)
Slightly overrated
After reading the rave review in my local rag, I was excited to see this film. Unfortunately, I found myself looking at my watch more than 3 times during the film which was definitely too long. Too many plot lines took much longer than necessary to flesh out. I wanted to like this more than "Lola" but alas it was not meant to be.
