Pieniä eroja (2002)
The best Finnish film ever made!
You've probably gone through this yourself. Remember the times you had a crush on your teacher? All the dreams you had of him? The longing, the yearning to see him, to talk to him... perhaps even to touch him? "Pieniä Eroja" is a film about Salla - a 13-year-old girl who has a crush on her ex-teacher from the lower level of the comprehensive school, Tarsala. Starting the upper level herself, Salla dreams of Tarsala and eventually they become friends.
Too bad - they never get closer than that to each other, and personally, I think that's the only negative thing about this film. I've had a crush on my teacher and I would have done ANYTHING to get his attention - not only spiritually, but physically also.
Even so, the film is very enjoyable and the acting is fine. I must admit both the actors of Tarsala and Salla were completely new to me (probably due to the fact that I'm not a huge fan of Finnish films) but they did a great job. The film was very realistic - a lot of Salla's thoughts were just like mine at the time I fantasized of my teacher (the only exception being the fact that if my teacher would have tried to kiss me, I wouldn't have rejected it!).
I really recommend this film to everyone, especially to those of you who have gone through the passion for teachers :)
Dune (2000)
If you have seen the original Dune first, DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME WATCHING THIS ONE!
I was so thrilled to hear there was a mini-series of Dune. I had seen the original movie directed by David Lynch and my expectations were really high for this series.
Unfortunately, the mini-series was a real disappointment. All the things I had loved about the original movie were gone: the music, the actors, the plot... the only actor worth mentioning is William Hurt (Duke Leto Atreides) - he's the only reason I gave this movie 2 stars instead of just one. Even so, I really loved Jürgen Prochnow as Leto in Lynch's version and thus consider Prochnow as the only real Duke. :)
The mini-series reminded me of Star Trek-films, as well as of Tank Girl. I think it was too "modern". I know Dune IS supposed to be futuristic, but I really prefer the original one instead of the miniseries.
The worst thing about the miniseries was Alec Newman (Paul Atreides). I think he was too young and didn't have any talent. Kyle MacLachlan as Paul in the original movie did much better job than Alec (I must admit I have no clue of MacLachlan's age at the time of the movie, but he SEEMED more mature and I really preferred it like that!).
Oh, how I miss MacLachlan, Prochnow, Everett McGill, Richard Jones, Alicia Witt, the music of Toto... most of all, David Lynch! The 1984 version of Dune was really RAPED by this piece of s*it! I can't recommend it to anyone for any reason, not even because of William Hurt, because Jürgen Prochnow was way better than him as Leto...
P.S. I haven't read the book so I can't comment whether the series was anything like it... :(
Dune (1984)
Excellent film!
I really love Dune. The reason I watched this film for the first time years ago was the fact that I had played Dune 2: The Building of a Dynasty. I had never read the book or even heard of it until I saw the film (and no, I still haven't read the book and probably never will, I don't like reading). Years after watching the film for the first time I also played the original Dune game, which was great, as well.
Dune has a perfect set of actors; to mention some of my favorites: Kyle MacLachlan, Everett McGill (funny, they both were cast in another David Lynch masterpiece, Twin Peaks) and Jürgen Prochnow (I prefer him without a mustache & beard though, lol!). I can't help mentioning Sting as well, even though I prefer him as an artist.
Another thing I loved about this film was the stunningly beautiful music. Especially I liked the piece that was played during the end credits.
The movie itself had a good plot (I must remind you I haven't read the book so I don't know whether the movie was anything even close to the book??). It was fun to watch, there were no boring moments. I was a bit confused in the beginning of the film though, the Emperor had a strange guest, I can't remember what the thing was called or what its purpose was... if you've seen it, you know what I'm talking about (the pink creature...??).
Anyway, I REALLY recommend this film to everyone, it's really a pleasure to watch!
Pearl (1996)
Pearl-y show
I've never been a huge fan of comedy with the exception of shows starring Stephen Fry & Hugh Laurie. American shows like "Friends" are a complete turn-off for me, that's why it's so surprising that "Pearl" is probably the best sitcom I've ever seen. It actually made me laugh which isn't that easy... especially not in case of a pre-laughed show like "Pearl" is.
I couldn't praise enough the excellent acting of Malcolm McDowell - this was the program which made me love him. I also liked the rest of the main cast, especially Lucy Alexis Liu (I've had crushes on teachers so I know what it was like to be "Amy"), Carol Kane and Kevin Corrigan.
I really recommend this program to everyone, it's great fun to watch and the actors really give their best in this one!
Fist of the North Star (1995)
Excellent fist!
The first comment I remember having read about this movie was this: "Why on earth did they put American actors in the roles of Japanese(???) people?" I have no idea, but in my opinion, it didn't matter. This film really rocks!
I've always liked all sorts of beat 'em up-films (and games as well, Mortal Kombat for example... too bad that movie sucked!) but this is definitely the best one I've seen so far. The storyline is interesting, the film has several good actors (especially Malcolm McDowell as Ryuken) and as a whole, this movie rocks!
I wish there were more beat 'em ups like this!
Mummy: Tomb of the Pharaoh (1996)
One of the best games ever made!
I've been playing computer games since I was 6 years old and "Mummy: Tomb of the Pharaoh" is definitely one of my favorite games of all time. It's something you'd call "an interactive movie", and for a game of its genre, it's the best one ever made.
Malcolm McDowell does a great job as Stuart Davenport. Not only that, but the music and graphics in this game are awesome. There's one bad thing about the game, though: it's way too easy to play. It'll only take an hour or two to finish the game, even for a beginner.
I definitely recommend this game to everyone who likes adventure games. It's not made by Sierra, but it's definitely worth trying!
Bride of Chucky (1998)
Absolutely... awful!
I'm a huge fan of horror films, especially older ones with Lugosi, Karloff, Price or Cushing. Naturally, I didn't want to miss Chucky-films, either, so I rented "Bride of Chucky". It definitely was NOT worth my time.
Why? First of all, the beginning of the film was like from a low-budget, awfully made "I want everyone to see my tits!"-film. The end of the film was better, but I found it funny instead of terrifying. Chucky couldn't scare me a bit.
I haven't seen other Chucky-movies yet, but I really, REALLY hope they are much better than this piece of ****. I can only recommend "Bride of Chucky" for those of you who like to see breasts, that's the only thing this movie had "enough" of (actually way too much of it, this really spoils this film). This movie doesn't know anything about horror, it's more like a black comedy to me. A really BAD one too!
