An unusual mix of swordplay and gunfighting.
11 March 2000
This movie is probably the first of its kind. Remembering the timeline that these two genres are set. I was in for a big surprise. Amazingly, the two genres of swordfighting and John Woo-type gunfights seemed to work together. For people who like both genres, this movie's for you. Because there's plenty of action in this movie, with the sword, or with the gun. There's also plenty of hilarious characters in the movie, like Robert Parkinson, the computer hacker, who needs to suck on a dummy or anything in the shape and form of a nipple, or otherwise he goes berserk. This is in total, a funny and good action movie!

The Matrix (1999)
Keanu Reeves can actually act!
24 December 1999
This is the film that showcases Keanu's acting talent. For his peformance in all his other movies ranged from pathetic to mediocre.

Aside from that, The Matrix is a kickass sci-fi/action flick. Carrie-Anne Moss is just great as Trinity, and proves to the male population that females can kick just as much butt as their male counterpart! The gunfight at the end to save Morpheus is just amazing, and it is the intelligent storyline that makes these unbelievable action scene 'real'.

If John Woo directed this film, it would be AWESOME! (my opinion)

A must see film. 10/10!

Police Story (1985)
Only JC could do something like this!
20 December 1999
Jackie Chan, he's the man, if he can't do it, no one can! This film is a Jackie Chan classic! Considering he did the stunts himself, you'd have to wonder how much punishment JC took while making this movie. The bit where JC slides down a pole wrapped in light bulbs, and then falls through the glass ceiling into the floor is just amazing, and if you missed it the first time, they repeat the stunt again from multiple camera angles. This is a must-see for any JC fan. 10/10

Face/Off (1997)
This is what a John Woo film is supposed to be!
19 December 1999
Finally, after 2 strikes, John Woo hits a home run with Face/Off. This is what a John Woo film is supposed to be. From tender moments (Archer's son being a sniper's victim) to gut-wrenching action (the pyrotechnic shootout in the hideout), this movie has it all. Topping it off with an intelligent storyline, this is a 5-star performance!

John Travolta and Nic Cage are just the best good guy/bad guy combination you could think of. The two are just brilliant as each other. There were a few question marks (Could Nic Cage really escape the maximum security prison after being there for a few days?), but that does not harm the film in any way.

A John Woo classic. 'nuff said

Broken Arrow (1996)
Much better than John Woo's first attempt in the US, but not much.
19 December 1999
This film was much better in that it had a better cast but suffered in the storyline department.

For one, how can Vic Deakins (John Travolta) a US pliot have access to nuclear weapons? What's the deal with 'uncoded circuitboards'? Don't EMPs (Electro-magnetic pulse) travel at instant speed. They certainly didn't in the movie. Though the script had many flaws. It is John Woo's direction that saves the movie. The gunfight in the abandoned copper mine was an example of what John Woo can do.

This is certainly much better than John Woo's previous movie, Hard Target. But is still below par, compared to his works in Hong Kong.

Overall, it's an above average film. 'nuff said

The Crow (1994)
Brandon Lee's final and best performance.
19 December 1999
The Crow is an absolute masterpiece. Words cannot describe how good this movie is. Brandon Lee gives out his best performance ever as Rock Guitarist Eric Draven. This movie has it all. Action, romance, comedy (humor, to be more politically correct), drama, even a bit of adventure. You've got to see it. An original classic. 10/10

A perfect blend of action and slapstick!
19 December 1999
This movie is a brilliant mixture of action and slapstick comedy. Only the comedic talent of Stephen Chow and Man Tat Ng could make a film this funny and hilarious. The scene where Man Tat Ng dressed as the Terminator, made me laugh my head off when I first saw it. If you need a laugh, this is the movie to watch.

The one that started it all
17 December 1999
This is the movie that started it all, the genre of "heroic bloodshed", and the careers of actor Chow Yun-Fat and director John Woo.>

Chow Yun-Fat is just original as Mark Lee (better known to people as "Mark-Gor" Gor is brother ie. Brother Mark) After this film was released, there were many fans who donned trench-coats and chewed match sticks, because they wanted to be like Mark. CYF is just so cool!

The gunfight scenes are just AWESOME. Shing (Waise Lee) is just a brilliant bad guy.

A classic John Woo masterpiece. An original piece of work and acting on CYF's part. 'nuff said. 10/10!
