When Boys Fly (2002)
"When Boys Fly" Soars Higher Than My Expectations
As a gay 20-something, watching this film was one of the most eye-opening experiences I have ever had. I never quite understood the appeal of the circuit party scene. In some ways, I still don't. What is so fun about getting so trashed you have to be taken to the hospital on a stretcher?
I always thought I was missing something - left out - by not experiencing this part of gay culture. However, this brief excursion into these boys' lives is enough experience I will ever need.
The film is engaging throughout and excellently edited, keeping the film rolling faster than its lead subjects. As shallow and confused and lonely as most of these boys appear to be, they are incredibly interesting and fun to watch.
My problem with documentaries is that frequently they use a lot of filler to make a longer film, but with the 62-minute run time of "When Boys Fly," it's just enough to set the scene, make a point, and leave the audience with a great high.
A Sound of Thunder (2005)
cleverly misguided
First, I just want to say that I really liked this film. I tend to avoid most movies that fall into the sci-fi/fantasy genre, but I was incredibly drawn to this story. And as i figured, I was pleased. It was very clever and very engaging.
However -- and this isn't as big of a deal to me as a decent story -- the special effects are, at times, so bad it's funny. If the only reason why you see movies is for the special effects, then I suggest you avoid this one. I just want to know what happened, what they were thinking. This movie could have been a huge blockbuster, but the special effects team was so sadly misguided. You think they would have left some money in the budget for post-production work.
Honestly, that's the only problem I found with this film. It has an even pace, decent performances, sufficient thrills, and fairly developed characters. Before you rent it, read the back of the case. If the story itself doesn't interest you, rent something else.
