One man's lopsided view of Christ's last hours
1 September 2004
When The Passion of the Christ was in theaters I couldn't find anyone willing to go see it with me. I then decided to wait till it was available to rent. That way if I felt the need to criticize the movie in my own special way the rest of the movie going audience wouldn't lynch me. Only now do I realize how correct I was in my decision to wait.

What the Passion amounts to is nothing more than two hours of a man being spat upon, beaten, and flayed like a piece of meat while others look on. There is nothing remotely spiritual about what is shown, only brief flashbacks to the last supper and the Sermon on the Mount are shown to give any religious feeling. While Jesus is portrayed in his usual pacifistic role other characters are not so lucky. Pilate is reduced to a spineless coward to afraid to make a decision that he turns to his fictional Christian sympathizing wife Claudia for advice. Nowhere in any religious text or historical documents have I ever heard of such a women. It seems she was added to make Pilate less of a villain, which is a false assumption. Satan is portrayed not as a beautiful seductive woman or a charming man but as a bald pale faced figure which makes even less sense.

Perhaps the biggest controversy is whether or not this film is Anti-Semitic. I cannot say for certain if it is or not, people will see what they want to see either way. However I can understand how such accusations can be made. The majority of Jesus' suffering comes at the hands of the Jews, who spit on, beat, and taunt him throughout the movie. The Romans on the other hand merely sit back and watch only a hand full of Roman guards taunt or beat Jesus leaving much of the work to the Jewish crowd. It seems as though Gibson dealt out the responsibility quite lopsided in his production and I can see how many could construe that as Anti-Semitism. Whether or not it was intentional is anyone's guess.

In the end though The Passion is a over the top pretentious and self serving religious flick. Hardly worthy of praise of such classic spiritual movies like The Last Temptation of Christ, King of Kings, or The Greatest Story Ever Told. These movies are critically acclaimed because they not only have great acting and production values but because they focused on the importance of Jesus' teachings and the way he lived his life. To focus on nothing more than on how he was executed is not the way one should base their religious faith. Love the man and his teachings don't focus on the way he was butchered.

Helen of Troy (2003)

A shameful retelling of the Illiad
21 April 2003
There are certain stories that cannot be retold or re-witten, the Illiad is one of those stories. The miniseries "Helen of Troy" bastardizes the epic poem Homer wrote and distorts the true nature of its characters. The main characters of the Illiad are Achillies, Agamemnon, and to a lesser extent Hector. Paris is a supporting character, important, but supporting. This miniseries makes Paris one of the main characters and pushes the true stars asside. The series also makes the Greeks the vilains, as well as war mongering barbarians who do not appreciate women, beauty, or the finer things life has to offer. This coupled with the fact that Achillies, the hero of the Illiad, is reduced from a tragic heroic figure, into a brash, loud, bald, bellowing monster, when that is so far from the true nature of his character. Important events are omitted, such as the fight between Agamemnon and Achillies, the death of his best friend Patroclus, and many others as well. What we are left with is a one sided view at the Trojan War and a load of fluff. I was truely disappointed with this miniseries not only because it ruined one of my favorite mythological stories and epic poems, but it strayed so far from the true story it gives such a false impression of what happened.

Resident Evil (2002)

Special Effects and a Big Budget do not a horror movie make
30 July 2002
As a fan of the horror genre and of the Resident Evil video game series I was looking forward to the theatrical adaption. However after viewing the movie I can only mourn what could have been. The majority of the movie is seen without the presence of any monsters and the ones that show up are few in number. One Licker a single pack of Cerberus zombie dogs and a few dozen Zombies, does little to impress this viewer. There is little character development and the performances themselves are hardly commendable. As for the amount of gore or in this case the lack there of it greatly hinders the movie itself. For an R rated horror movie this film had a serious lack in carnage and bloodshed. And if the title of Resident Evil is to be used the movie using it needs to have a certain quotient of violence and gore this film does not. In the end we have a movie with a big budget and fancy special effects that fail to cover up the fact that this is one lightweight horror movie. Not recomended at all

Visually Stunning But Falls Short of Being Perfect
23 July 2002
Escaflowne the Movie while visually stunning and aided by an enchanting musical score just seems to fall short of being as epic as it could have been. With a running time of 98 min. events and character development seem rushed and unfulfilled. We never really get to know the characters and even though many viewers will have already seen the TV series that's still no excuse for the lack of content. Hitomi seems to shift from a depressed school girl on the verge of suicide to a strong supportive heroine without much coaxing or personal experience. The full legend of the Escaflowne and Wing Goddess as well as the mythology of Gaia are also never fleshed out for us. The final confrentation between the two brothers is a far cry from what could have been. And the ending leaves something to be desired as well, not as fairy tale as some might have wanted. However inspite of these problems I still enjoyed Escaflowne the Movie. It is a feast for the eyes and ears, and as a theatrical adaption it has no problem standing on its own. Definitly recomended ^_^

Hey Arnold! (1996–2004)
A splendid cartoon with imaginitive characters
2 November 2001
I first saw Hey Arnold when it debuted back in the mid 90's and I

instantly fell in love with the show. Hey Arnold is so good because of

the characters in the show, they are in the 4th grade but they are

mature beyond their years and yet they still retain some level of

childishness. Characters like Curly, Helga, Brainy, and Arnold's

Grandparents have become some of my favorite cartoon characters. The

stories range from the wacky(Helga and her secret obsession with Arnold)

to the serious/sad(Pigeon Man, Parents Day, Helga on the Couch) and even

the occult(The many urban legends of the city) and each one has a charm

all its own. Hey Arnold is a gem among many over rated Nicktoons and is

versitile enough to be enjoyed by not just children but by older people

as well(I myself am 20 and enjoy the show greatly)

Invader ZIM (2001–2006)
I'm gonna sing the Doom Song now
27 October 2001
At first glance Invander Zim is a dark and insane cartoon, but if you sit down and watch it you'll find that is full of even more insanity then you could possibly imagine. Created by Johen Vasquez the brain behind JTHM, this cartoon has a dark animeeque feel to it while still retaining Johen's own brand of style. Invader Zim is not only funny but has some very unique characters most noteably GIR, Zim's dimwitted but loveable Robot servent. The cartoon at times seems like it should be on a different network seeing as it has some dark qualities to it not meant for younger kids, but hey not my decision. I now leave you with Gir's words of Wisdom "I'M DANCING LIKE A MONKEY!!!!"

Moulin Rouge! (2001)
8/10
Visualy stunning but the ending will leave you feeling empty
13 June 2001
Warning: Spoilers
***SPOILERS*** ***SPOILERS*** At the very begining of Moulin Rouge you are told that Nicole Kidman's character is going to die, that in itself is not so bothersome since you haven't gotten to know her and therefore don't feel any emotion yet. Moulin Rouge is a visualy stunning and breath taking movie with lavish art direction, beautiful musical scoring, and colorful costumes. The music is great to hear and is sung in great form. And the acting while not on the same level as the technical aspects of the movie is still applaudable. However after the movie ended I felt empty and somewhat sad, this is because of how the movie concludes. From the begining of the movie right up until the end it is a fast paced and stimulating then like a stake through the heart the music dies and so does Nicole Kidman. The ending while an homage to many opera's like La Boheme is something that should have been happier, I would have rather seen the two live happily ever after. Over all Moulin Rouge is a very good movie but the ending leaves something to be desired

This animated version of the fairy tale takes only cues from its origin(Jack, the Giant, and the beanstalk). The rest is a completely new story about Jack and his adventures in a kingdom in the clouds
19 December 1999
This is without a doubt one of the best animated films I have seen to date. It is currently out of print and not available anywhere. I got my copy off Ebay and believe me I was lucky. This animated version of the fairy tale takes only cues from its origin(Jack, the Giant, and the beanstalk). The rest is a completely new story about Jack and his adventures in a kingdom in the clouds and he meets a beautiful princess under the control of a witch. Jack must find a way to save the princess and destroy the Giant and witch. The many songs in this movie are cheerful and fun to sing along to. If you get the chance to own this movie you won't
