The Pope on the horns of a dilemma -what could he do?
11 March 2013
Regardless whether the acting and the special effects were scanty or not, the history depicted was fascinating and disturbing. Not many stories about this awful time are out there that I know of. The ruler of the Catholic Church v.s. the nazi madman. I thought the film did a good job of showing the Pope's agony over what to do. Besides the fear of Hitler's reprisals, the waffling and indecision among his own rank and file was clearly stated. The German soldiers may have been played over-the-top in their brutality and sinister doings, but how else to portray these thugs who sent thousands to their death. Even though these stories may be presented in less than a first-rate production, at least the folks that made this film brought to the screen a bit of history that needs oft to be repeated.

Two 14 year-olds make a T &A movie
28 January 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I knew, when I saw the awful credits roll, that this was going to be a really bad movie. The titles were drawn on parchment shaped to look like ship's sails and even shook (or vibrated) to imply wind. I barely knew it was filmed in color until a faded red peeked out from the blurry background. The special effects of the ship-wreck reminded me of a child batting about his bathtub toys. The next scene had the beautiful Amanda Blake laying castaway on the beach, her gorgeous red hair freshly coiffed and blow-dried. Her clothes, perfectly intact remained so during the chase scene up the cliff upon which she wrestled with and threw off her twice-as-strong attacker, who, having just recovered from a half-drowned state felt that sex was more important than self-preservation. This was one of those dreadful films that common sense says to turn it off, yet some morbid instinct keeps the viewer riveted to the screen to see how much worse it can get. It does not disappoint. From Ms. Blake's terrible English accent, 'repeating' flintlock muskets, cheesecake females prancing around in Cypress Gardens, a male lead with what looks like glued-on chest hair to a complete departure from reality. At the end, however, I was glad I saw it, and will see it again, not as some cinematic flagellation, but an exercise of satisfaction, having seen the worst movie ever made. I recommend this to anyone who thinks they have seen the worst movie ever. This starts badly and just gets worse. One redeeming feature-Elmer Bernstein's lively music score.

Never again?
26 October 2012
As I watched this rather dull, plodding film with its strange narration I began to have a sense of fright beginning to build up. The work-a-day folks, the villagers and laughing children-very home-like, very much like here. The occasional scenes of brutish Nazi's were not to terrifying as the everyday citizen's acceptance of the new order. The movie portrayed this so well in the almost blank faces of the extras as they witnessed people being taken away and that awful suicide from the rooftop. Watching this film made me realize that-yes-it could happen here. Kudos to those faceless extras that brought home the real atmosphere of such an awful time.

Wonderful photographic effects, neat soundtrack.

.I saw the film when I was 14 years old. It was on TV in the mid fifties. I hardly remember the story, but it was about a Pancho Villa type revolutionary who decides to retreat from the town wherin dwells his lady-love. The images from the film have remained crisp and clear in my mind, both sight and sound after all these years, moreso than any film I have seen since. Most well remembered was the opening scene in the glass blowing shop, and the final retreat from the city at the film's end. This is not a very good reviw of the film, just an old fellow's happy remembering. Sadly, I don't know anyone else who has seen it, and I have not been able to find the film on tape.
