The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005)
A sheer job for start to finish.
The most joyous film I have ever seen. Take the best bits of Shrek, both 1 and 2, and you still don't even come close to the sheer harvest of laughs and homages in this film. And that's not saying Shrek wasn't good, but every single scene in this film has been lovingly crafted, and it shows. The humanity as work in this creation shines through and reminds us that CGI (despite Pixar coming incredibly close - good pun that!) still doesn't have this amount of soul, and one wonders if a computer generated character really ever will capture the humanity of a mute mutt.
Long live claymation!!! It's just a pity its such a painstaking process, but I suppose the phrase quality not quantity was made for stuff like this.
Spider-Man 2 (2004)
Another One of the rare breed of sequels better than the original
What a superhero movie should be really.
Should of been called Spiderman Part 2.
The continuing story of Peter Parker and his 2 peers is really the main focus here and what makes this movie stand out as feeling more real, over other Superhero Sequels (other than perhaps Superman 2) is that human factor, as opposed to the mistake that Batman for example made as it progressed, concentrating on the villains to the detriment of the main character.
The Spidey FX although better than Spiderman, are still very plasticky, although I actually quite liked their comicky feel, and perhaps it was intended, as spiderman as a film is beyond having to lean on it's SFX to make a buck.
Spoiler Warning
Also a great indictment of the film, that the whole cast of Spiderman returned for Part 2, how often does that happen?
Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004)
Overhyped, and ultimately dissapointing (spoiler warning)
As an outsider, I have to say that Fahrenheit 9/11 was a big dissapointment, maybe people in general don't read the papers or try to get a balanced view on world events, but as probably more has been written about 9/11 than anything else, there was nothing in this film that was new, or even more damning and dissapointing, that was answered.
I'm afraid that like "The Passion of the Christ" this film will be reviewed, as hard as some may try, based on in this case, one's political leanings, rather than any of it's other merits.
It did start off well, the titles rolling up 12 minutes into the film's opening conspiracy theories were amazing, and somehow the fact that it took 4 odd minutes to display a few names was irrelevant as before us the promise of seeing behind the "show" was laid.
Ultimately what was the outcome? That the war in Iraq wasn't neccessary? I was hoping maybe for some insight into why THEY duped us (money?), or whether, THEY
were duped themselves, but the film hardly bothered to tell us that WMD haven't been found etc, instead concentrating unfairly in my opinion on the terrible grief of one women after the oh-to-recent loss of her Son in Iraq, and that (horror of horrors) the army is mostly made up of people from the poorer parts of society, which I'm sure you'll find it true of most civil servant jobs all over the world.
Where's the controversy in that?
And I found it quite ironic that when the army first came into it, they were shown as mindless thugs, listening to music, as they killed innocent people etc, yet in the end the director used their meaningless deaths as the main collateral (closing point) in his argument.
In the end I ended up paying to watch one person's biased political message and I'm no particular fan of "Dubya" myself
Jersey Girl (2004)
I really loved this...
After some of the critical mauling this film got in the UK (saying it was worse than Gigli etc), I went in with lowered expectations, but all I can say is what a load of tosh, the critics here write. You really have to be a cynical heartless prat to not find something sweet and touching in this gem, I really wanted it to just go on and on.
Great casting, performances, and cameos all around. And for the first time ever a whole movie where the kid wasn't at all annoying, for that alone its' worth the admission price.
One of Kevin Smith's best. Made me want to be a Dad myself.
The Order (2003)
Only one thought was provoked....
Thought provoking? How on earth, did a movie this bad get released?
I would really love someone to tell me what else was thought provoking about this film?
Really this is cheap, lazy storytelling, there are so many gaps, plot holes and mistakes that I could only hope, for the credibility of the film makers involved, that this movie was ruined by studio inteference or something similar.
Hulk (2003)
Exceeded my expectations
thanks to all the bad reviews this movie got this movie I went to see it without any expectations even though The Hulk was always one of my favs, and I have to say I really really enjoyed it, I can't understand what everyone was going on about, the SFX were great and unlike Spiderman and X-men I felt a degree of tension and actually
empathised with the characters.
Seems so many people have judged this movie based on their preconceptions of what a summer superhero movie should be like.
Daredevil (2003)
Only criticism was that it was too short
I really wasn't keen to see this and only went because it was a friends birthday and they wanted to see it, but I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed it, and my only real criticism of it was that it was too short (that it all tied up too quickly), which I guess meant that I was enjoying it quite a bit (although I suppose Kingpin could of been more threatening etc)
Much better than Spiderman, Batman and Xmen in my opinion, because I never really felt any real threat or tension in those movies (like the kids in the cable car weren't going to die in SpiderMan etc), I knew that the title characters would win, despite the great plans of the super-villains, and of course they did easilly. But this wasn't the case with daredevil, from DareDevil's first Vigilante act to the ruthlessness of BullsEye, DD had a certain vulnerability and the films willingness to admit that "hey people can and do die" made it more "realistic" (if you can say that about a SuperHero movie)
