An interesting low-budget western.
23 December 2000
Using a theme that became quite popular decades later, Amateau scores well on his directorial debut. The original title of this movie was to be "The Rebel" however, producer Broder was unable to keep his hands off anything he was involved in, hence the uninspired title. It is interesting to note that Director Amateau years later in his TV show "Dukes of Hazzard" named the automobile "The Rebel." Ireland is perfectly cast as the emoting Civil War veteran, only seeking peace, but willing to fight and kill to get it. The supporting cast is extremely interesting, featuring the, by then has-been Morris, Tierney, Dell, and Chaney. Considering that Ireland, Chaney, Tierney, and Morris were renown for their drinking bouts, working on this picture must have been a real challenge. The end result is a very good, if dated western, featuring some of the finest acting put on celluloid.

Good character development/weak story
12 April 2000
Penn takes the time to develop his characters, and we almost care about them. However there are some real problems with the story here, we see no real motivation for the evil brother's behavior, and the time line is screwed up. Supposedly set in 1963, the music is late 60s/early 70s. The references and dialogue is 70s/80s. The potential for a powerful climax presents itself, and Penn allows it to slip away. But even with all these difficulties it is worth the watch, but not great.

The Siege at Ruby Ridge (1996 TV Movie)
Wake up Amerika!!
2 April 2000
This picture should serve as a wake up call to those Americans that sit in front of their TVs with bellies full of beer and fall asleep each night. Weaver is relentlessly pursued by a system that has entrapped him and now kills off his family right before his eyes. This is a true story, and Lon Houriuchi, the "hero" murders Weaver's wife while she holds his infant son. If that isn't enough to get you going, they also kill his son and dog. Anyone that doesn't see or admit to what is going on here is wearing blinders. Of course, the picture is given the necessary Hollywood leftist bent, but what would you expect?

An Off-beat, thought provoking western drama.
16 November 1999
Although this nifty little western drama is seldom available for viewing, it remains as one of the better western character studies of the 50s. Perhaps the lack of action, and the stark reality of the picture account for the poor reviews it received upon it's release, however, in hindsight, it remains one of the better "High Noon" inspired quickies, and is perhaps in some respects even better than it's insparation. Lyon shows signs of real acting brilliance as the cowardly Sheriff, only willing to fight when he is shamed into it. The great title song by Wakely is unforgettable.
