The Gambler (1974)
Greatest movie about gambling addiction
This film is for the initiated. If you have no knowledge of gambling then it might well be meaningless though I think an intelligent person will understand the torment from the point of view of the secondary characters.
James Caan puts in a brilliant performance. The cast is quite strong and they don't get up to fantastic things. This is a real movie and the moral of the story isn't friendly.
A must for any gambler.
Manhunter (1986)
The most complete movie ever made
I have looked through this movie 20 times and can't really find a single thing that is wrong. Maybe Will's dictation to himself in the victim's house is too pretentious but otherwise the whole thing is scarily good.
There is nothing heroic about it and the ending is about the best of all time in any movie.
Yes, the soundtrack is a bit silly in some places but at the final scene it is brilliant.
Moreover, this shows just how bad the movie producers are when they thought this one was bad and then went on to produce the other rubbish with Hopkins.
Never mind, this is sweet and pure.
Croupier (1998)
A good try
Yes, the people here made a good attempt at something that would make you believe that the world they depicted of casinos was genuine. It was sadly just a cameo montage of pop belief.
But the acting wasn't bad. And the style made you think your money was well spent.
The story, what story?
I like people having a go but why not do the research? Stupid violent scenes just to broaden the viewer group!?!?
I had a nice time in the cinema but this is just a performance vehicle for people who want to be serious about movies,
Still a bit of fun tho 6/10
Pandora and the Flying Dutchman (1951)
Real cinematic voyage
You must make your own mind up here. This a rare movie but classic discovery. James Mason will disturb you as the Flying Dutchman. Ava Gardnar tries to be the star but Mason will remove you into the make believe world, that is the quality of this movie.
We don't see Mason for a while and we see Gardner a lot but this is a treat for the reasons that movies were made for. Its just beautiful and other comments like 'sentimental' or 'pretentious' are really stupid here.
This is great cinema like it should be. Of course nonesense but this is a world created successfully by the celluloid which is the whole purpose. Brilliant.

Boiler Room (2000)
Dramatic, enjoyable, true life depiction.
Its tough to make a realistic film of any subject and produce a piece of enjoyable, believable cinema. Its done well here, to the point that many of the viewers will disbelieve the gaul and gullability of the characters. This is how it is in the scam- world of finance (its all a scam, we just need it).
I take 3 points away from this film because all of the sub-plots make no sense and the cinematography is terrible. (Out of focus so much my eyes hurt!).
Deserves a place on everybody's DVD shelf.
