Scary Movie (2000)
A Comedy of Horrors
If you are expecting a serious slasher/scream movie then you are in for a big disappointment. But if you're looking for something to tickle your funny bone then this film is for you. The most fun part of the movie is trying to identify the various horror films that this movie samples. A literal comedy of horrors, crude jokes and all, that will have laughing from beginning to end.
October Sky (1999)
Dreams can come true
One of the best family films to come out in a long time. You'll find yourself rooting for the boys all the way throughout the movie. The best part of this movie is that as far fetched as it may seem (Hollywood happy ending magic) it's actually based on a true story.
Yes, we've all seen the storylines before but that's what makes this film so endearing. A wonderful film for the entire family.
Saturn 3 (1980)
Evil Dude and Robot must have the girl.
I've been wanted to see this movie and finally found it late one night on the SCI-FI Channel. It starts off innocently enough with opening credits. Neat cast of actors and you think it may actually have some value but on the other hand when Fawcett takes top billing over Kirk Douglas one begins to wonder.
Basic plot soon falls into Evil Dude and his robot wants the girl while Ferrah screams throughout the film. Reminds me of those old low budget horror films of the 30's & 40's. Makes for an interesting evening if nothing else is available at the video store, otherwise a real drag. Better to leave it at the video store and go home and read a book. Not one that Kirk Douglas will glowingly talk about when asked about his career.
Rent if you must but be prepared to be bored silly.
Matewan (1987)
Even if you know the outcome the suspense will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Having grown up in the southern coalfields of West Virginia I heard the stories of the way things were from many people who lived during those years. Many of the scenes in this movie are very accurate: the Baldwin-Felts agents were ruthless in carrying out the mine owners orders and yes that was a machine gun gaurding the mines in the movie, the working conditions for the miners during those years were terrible as the company literally owned the miners and everything around them, evictions were common, tent camps were everywhere. This film is as close as you will come to the real way things were during the 'Mine Wars.'
Of course being somewhat prejudice for this film I'm glad to see all ov the positive reviews from people throughout the world. This film really depicts life in southern West Virginia during those years with all of its elements, including the 'hill people' towards the end of the movie. Mrs. Elkins was right when she said that them people were dangerous. A wonderful film that keeps you in suspense right up until the end even if you already know the outcome.
This film was just part of the whole picture dealing with the 'Mine Wars.' To learn more about the 'Mine Wars' you might want to find the film/documentary called, "Even the Heavens are Weeping" which depicts another segment of labor unrest in West Virginia's Coalfileds on a much larger scale.
Sodom and Gomorrah (1962)
Interesting & Entertaining but Bible purists will object.
An overlooked movie of a whole genre of films that was popular during its era. Like most biblical epics of this type they sometimes wonder away from the scriptural story as recorded in the Bible and this may be its one drawback. In a way it drifts just a little to far away from the scriptures so most bible purists will have trouble accepting this film as a close representation of the scriptures. However, overall it's an interesting and entertaining film.
Twister (1996)
A fun movie to watch on a cold winter night.
If you're looking for a movie where you don't have to try and figure out some complicated plot but only looking for fast action then this movie is made for you. Oh, there is a plot of some sort but it's hard to pinpoint. Sort of good scientist verses the evil tornado, who will win, story at eleven. The real stars of the movie are the special affects wizards. Sort of like, "Hey we have some really cool affects let's put them in a movie and have fun blowing away the audience." That's exactly what these f/x gurus did in this film. Turn your head away for only a moment and you miss something, flying cows for example. In some movies you wait and wait for the action scenes to wake you up but in 'Twister' you keep waiting for the action to slow down just a bit so you can catch your breath. Overall this is a fun movie to watch and well worth renting at your local video outlet. Keep your remote close by as you'll want to rewind some scenes just to if what you saw was actually what you thought you seen. A fun movie.
The Last Temptation of Christ (1988)
Spiritually strong persons will not find this film offensive but only strengthened and drawn closer to Christ by the spirituality and sensitivity of this film.
After hearing and reading all the controversy surrounding this film I was somewhat puzzled. What was all the controversy about? This is a beautiful film but it is definitely not for the Bible purists. This film requires an open mind, especially in the beginning of the film which seems to be pure conjecture as very little is known of Jesus' live before he began his earthly ministry.
The film becomes more interesting when Jesus begins his ministry and we start recognizing more familiar events as recorded in the Bible. The film reflects a more realistic version of everyday life in the middle east, the musical score adds to the overall feel. This is not your typical big hollywood production Jesus movies that tend to follow the Bible word fo word. As Christians we believe Christ to be both divine and human. This film really brings out the human side of Christ and for the purist it may prove to be a problem but the film does not detract from the divine nature of Christ. Instead, the film shows a man much like ourselves, struggling with decisions, looking for answers. The film captures the political climate of that era as he is confronted with a multitudes of people, each one it seems with different agendas then what he is trying to teach.
The spirituality of the film grows and grows as you become involved with the different characters. My favorite line in the film occurs after Jesus disrupts the money changers outside the temple and begins explaining to the people around him that God is a spirit that is in everyone. When the priests come out of the temple to see what is happening he says to them, "Do you think God is only for you? God is not an Israelite!" The political and spiritual climate of the film is highlighted when Jesus is sent to Pontius Pilate. Pilate says to Jesus that he is more dangerous then the zealots because he tries to change ideas and attitudes. This was one of the very things that Christ was trying to teach some of his disciples. It does no good to get rid of Rome, if the heart remains corrupt, only another ruler just as bad will take the place of the Roman.
The most controversial part of the film is the last twenty minutes. Christ is tempted away from his mission but in the end it is Christ who is victorious over Satan. When Christ is returned to the cross the message seems to be saying to us that there is hope for all of us.
