A Man for Hanging (1972)
One of the stupidest westerns I've ever seen
I agree wholeheartedly with another reviewer here who wrote this film should be bagged and thrown in the nearest garbage can. Absolute garbage, despite a really good cast. What were they thinking when they signed on to this potato? The terrorizing rape scenes are awful, and seem geared to a sick audience. It is also one of the stupidest westerns I've ever seen, especially the gun fights where both sides blaze away dozens of rounds without ever reloading. We have a station master who goes about the country side unarmed. His wife doesn't have a gun, either. A beautiful gal played by Brooke Bundy who just happens to be target practicing alone by a road, but later has the amazing ability to leave after all the good guys but beat them to the bad guys' rendezvous. A deputy sheriff who makes Festus look like a rocket scientist. I have to admit, though, there were some nice looking horses in this movie.
Oklahoma Annie (1952)
A great Saturday matinee movie.
As another reviewer here wrote, this movie was made for kids at the Saturday matinee. My wife and I loved it! Yeah, a lot of it's corny, but talk about non stop action! Bank robbers, chase scenes, shoot outs, fire engines, it just never stops! I loved the sheriff's Ford; that car sure took a beating in this film! My favorite part of the movie was when Judy sings in front of the three mirrors in her store. Pay attention here, as Judy sings or doesn't sing in each of the three mirrors; I watched that scene several times and was really impressed, considering this movie was made in 1952! From Judy's drive and spunk to the town's women folk coming to the rescue in fire trucks, this movie was way ahead of it's time regarding women's lib and, I think, a tribute to women's contribution to the WWII effort.
The Hard Man (1957)
A fun western with memorable characters
I don't understand why viewers only rated this movie 6.1 (as of 1/30/23). I loved it. It was my introduction to Guy Madison, and I think he did a pretty decent job of playing a troubled character. And Lorne Greene as a mean, dirty town boss was fun to watch. It was also my introduction to Valerie French, who's character I thought turned out to be a really interesting and had a lot more depth than Lorne Greene's. I liked Robert Burton as Sheriff Hacker, portraying an older man who knows his gun fighting days are pretty much over.
Another thing I enjoyed about this movie was seeing the old Columbia Pictures western set again; there's some great shots of the saloon and the hotel, which appeared in so many Columbia westerns.
Tales of Wells Fargo: Forty-Four Forty (1960)
Peter Whitney and lots of plot holes
NOTE: some spoilers! I loved this episode! First of all, Peter Whitney was great as a despicable character. But second, this episode has more plot holes than a pound of Swiss cheese! The worst one is the "bullet" the local Wells Fargo guy supposedly dug out of the seat back of the stage. So the guard on the stage was shot from behind the stage, the bullet went clear through him, then turned around and buried itself in the seat back? And never mushroomed? And what did the robbers do with their horses when they went into town on the stage coach? Did Jim ever get an answer to his telegram? The driver's story about the new guard sounded pretty fishy and would be easy to check with a telegram. And finally, I cracked up during the fight scene with the obvious stunt double, as pointed out in the Goofs section!
Gunsmoke: Lynott (1971)
Loved the characters and dialogue
As other reviewers have noted, there are glaring plot problems with this episode... but I still loved it. Tom Lynott is a flawed character, but with enough good and bad qualities to be very real, and his portrayal of a wild west adrenaline junkie was great. I thought the bad guys were a hoot, and, as someone else mentioned, a who's who of Gunsmoke alumni.
The dialogue cracked me up; it's as if the writers tried to cram in every (supposed) old west saying they could think of! Some that I can remember:
I'll tackle ya flatter than a bug's pockets.
Pack 'em into the jail tighter than a long fish
in a short can.
Close your mouth before the bees hive.
All right, drop your knife, or I'll air out your bread basket.
All in all, a very enjoyable episode!
Click (2006)
worst movie I've seen in years
Hands-down the worst movie I've seen in years. It apparently was written BY 12-year old dim-witted boys FOR 12-year old dim-witted boys. Sets a new benchmark for crudity and lack of originality. Unless you like dogs going to the bathroom and getting romantic with stuffed animals; then this is your movie. A scene making fun of Arab customers was moronic and tasteless. The workaholic dad is totally unbelievable and lacks any depth whatsoever. Who would go out late at night to buy a remote when you have a deadline to meet? This movie also contains some of the most in-your-face product placement in recent memory. The only redeeming feature is an appearance by Christopher Walken, but it's not enough to recommend the movie. Avoid it like the plague.
Wo hu cang long (2000)
Outstanding! Awesome! A must see!
You know it's a great movie when you find yourself thinking about it hours later... again as you drift asleep... and then for the next several days. The sets, the photography, the action, the characters - they all stick with you, permeating your conciousness. One warning, though: see it NOW, on the big screen! It's going to lose a lot on the little screen.
Escanaba in da Moonlight (2001)
Great entertainment! Laughed 'til my belly hurt!
I really enjoyed this. Laughed myself silly, yet beneath the 'deer camp' shenanigans it's a story about family... about a dad and a brother willing to go the distance to help their son and brother. I thought it dragged a bit towards the end, but overall I rate it a "Must See"!
Titan A.E. (2000)
Save your money, wait for the video
What a let down. The animation is first-rate, but the story and characters are as lame as that Titan christmas tree ornament... not to mention the plot holes, where they could've hidden that bulbous monstrosity. I was cheering for the Drej by the end of the movie.
