Nine to Five (1980)
Classic Workplace Comedy
Listen to the lyrics of Dolly's title song and you'll understand just how great this movie is ( why didn't her song get the best original song oscar?). This is Dabney Coleman's greatest role and Lily Tomlin, Dolly Parton and Jane Fonda have a field day. It is also unintentionally funny as it pre-dates the age of the PC and a couple of other major workplace changes but never fear it has plenty of copier humor to spare.
Prince of Jutland (1994)
Embarrassingly bad given the incredible cast
So this was quite a waste of material and casting ( Helen Mirren, Tom Wilkinson and Brian Cox, why oh why did they take these roles?). The movie plays like a badly staged Hamlet without the benefit of Shakespeare's language and plot construction. In addition, the battle scenes appeared to be "re-enactments" from a low budget history documentary.
Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001)
Impressive adaptation from stage to screen
The stage version was more rock 'n' roll but the film carries with it a heavier emotional impact. Definitely a new twist on the meaning of freedom. If you are looking at purchasing the soundtrack be sure to purchase the original cast recording not the orignal motion picture soundtrack.
Serendipity (2001)
surprisingly good
Well written and thoughtful, this movie moves beyond the expected romantic comedy formula. John Cusack, Kate Beckinsale, Jeremy Piven and of course Molly Shannon are perfectly cast. Definitely worth the investment of time and money particularly given what is currently in release.
