Paycheck (2003)
For the love of Pete
Someone, please stop letting John Woo make movies. He commented that science fiction only serves movies in that it creates good opportunity for special effects. He took a perfectly good plot with a lot of potential and turned it into nonsensical drivel. When Michael Jennings (Ben Afleck) dispatches hoards of nameless armed henchmen with a broomstick, you can nod your head in understanding that this is all made plausible because the director showed him practicing earlier in the movie.
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
Better than the first or second!
I was one of the few fortunate souls who's company does business with New Line Cinema, and we were treated to a sneak peak at Return of the King five days before its release. I'm a huge fan of both the first and second movies. And I think the third outdoes them both. Visually, I sat for three hours twenty stunned. The third movie remained as faithful to the book as I could possibly imagine. The only complaint I can think of, ***SPOILER ALERT*** is that I didn't like Legolas sliding down the trunk of the Oliphant. (Much like I didn't like him riding a shield down the stairs in The Two Towers.) But that is so minor that it wouldn't even scratch the perfect 10 that I give this movie. I could already see the parts that were left out for the extended version and I can't wait to see that. All that's left to say is, thank you to Peter Jackson and everyone else involved in this movie for giving us everything we could possibly imagine.
One last note: Make sure the theater you see it at plays this movie LOUD. When we watched the walls shook. And the screams of the Nazgul made our eyes water and skin run cold. :)
Fight Club (1999)
Must be seen a second time.
I find it amazing how many details slipped me by the first time around. I thought the movie was good but unremarkable the first time I saw it. Watching it a second time was astonishing. The movie is pure excellence. Everyone involved in the making must be highly commended. This is a keeper.
The Mating Habits of the Earthbound Human (1999)
Surprisingly funny. This is a perfect party movie to rent with some friends.
Some terrifically oddball comments from David Hyde Pierce as an alien commenting on the human mating ritual. Though the story is really follows all of the stereotypes about how people meet (and mate.) There's plenty of great humor, and a few really great laughs. And Carmen Electra... On top of being spectacularly beautiful, she's a decent actress. She first surprised me on the TV show "Just Shoot Me" with her great sense of timing and delivery. I'd love to see more of her in funny roles.
This is a perfect party movie.
The Sixth Sense (1999)
Brilliant
Unexpectedly brilliant. Superb performances all around, but especially for Haley Joel Osment who deserves an Oscar without a doubt. This, much like "The Usual Suspects," is a movie to be enjoyed many times. I give it a 10+.
The Spanish Prisoner (1997)
Plot holes and inconsistent acting.
The plot holes in this film bring the Grand Canyon to mind. I won't spoil anything for would be viewers, but I found myself asking many times "why in the world would (blah blah)," and "how is (blah blah) not obvious?" While the secretary's peculiar delivery was at first intriguing, it ended up being just plain annoying. I thought she might turn up to be more interesting than she was. And there were uncomfortable moments in conversation, not because the director wanted tension, but because people simply don't behave that way.
Do yourself a favor, stay away from this film. See "The Usual Suspects," "Dead Again," or "Shattered."
