The Best of Times (1986)
Hilarious movie that deserves another look
Why did this movie fail commercially? It's got a sharp script (by Ron Shelton) and great performances by Kurt Russell and, especially, Robin Williams, in a brilliant manic nerd turn that's different from any of his other work. A great renter.
The Survivors (1983)
Unjustly overlooked: a very funny movie
The Survivors was unjustly overlooked. It's a very funny and original comedy featuring one of Robin Williams' most inventive performances. It's a chance to see Williams at his most volatile and daring, before he adapted his persona to bland "family" movies like Patch Adams. He has an excellent foil here in Walter Matthau. Check it out.
The Shop Around the Corner (1940)
The best romantic comedy of all time
A perfect film, the best romantic comedy of all time. Stewart's performance is unbelievably moving and expert. Margaret Sullivan is just as fine. A great Samson Raphaelson script and Lubitsch's famous "touch" at its precise best. This, not the maudlin "It's a Wonderful Life," is the annual must-see Jimmy Stewart Christmas movie.
Note: The remake, "You've Got Mail," is an abomination that completely misreads and distorts the original.
