Chasing Amy (1997)
If you could get through it, you got something.
Coming from a town of only 55,000 I don't have much exposure to the gay and lesbian community. Sitting through this Kevin Smith classic was a challenge at first. But after seeing it I learned a little about myself and my views and opinions on relationships. Once I was able to get past the homosexuality there was something there. (Since first viewing, I have seen other films with strong homosexual content that would put Chasing Amy in the Disney category) There was enough Kevin Smith humor and brilliant dialogue to keep me watching. It made me think about myself, even more than Clerks did. Another Jaws reference was established as well just as in the other two NJ3 films. (Hooper in Chasing Amy, Brodie in Mallrats, Salsa Shark in Clerks) If you would like to see a movie that helps you get in touch with a side of you that you never thought existed, try it out sometime. Because come on, that's what I'm sayin' how long can a tongue really get?
The Big Lebowski (1998)
If you want to lead an exciting life and don't want to work, watch this film and take notes.
I watched The Big Lebowski a few nights ago with a handful of friends, one of which was a female. During the film, I wondered if this was a film she could enjoy. I do not know any female who has seen the film. After, she told me she loved it. I was taken aback by this comment and now I am thoroughly convinced that this is a great movie. It would be impossible for me to give away any of the plot, considering that the plot is inexplicable. However, The Big Lebowski is a phenomenal comic mystery complete with cursing, bowling, unemployment, grand theft auto, a matter of one million dollars, and a toe...with nail polish.
Mallrats (1995)
Funny but...
I'll have to admit I thought this movie was hilarious, but that's as far as I'm willing to take it. It really is not a GREAT movie. You can only watch a movie like this so many times. The humor is meant for those who can't and won't think too hard about the jokes to get them. Or for those who are just intelligent enough to understand them. Maybe I was too old (mature) to see this movie when I did, but that is my philosophy. One liners get stale and can't make a movie. Mallrats has high entertainment value but nothing worth watching repeatedly in other words it is not a good movie, just good for a few laughs.
I hate to utter the phrase... but this movie is a sell out. It has no independent film spark. I think the only reason Kevin Smith made this movie was to get enough money to work on greater projects like Chasing Amy and Dogma. Clerks would have been a much more highly acclaimed film with a little more cash, although it is still one of my favorites.
Clerks (1994)
More than a comedy.
I saw Mallrats and laughed my a** off. Then my friend told me, if you think that's funny you should see Clerks. I took his advice and I was more than impressed. Kevin Smith hid a deeper meaning behind a mask of humorous, grotesque, graphic, and hilarious dialogue. The character development is brilliant despite the lack of acting ability. If you are looking for a comedy which is authentic Generation X material with more humor than a truck load of one liners, this is film you should get into.
