The Grasshopper (1970)
A kitchen sink of cliches
The Grasshopper contains nearly every plot device for a film about a teenager trying to make it in Vegas and LA. The film crams the following into only 98 minutes: hitchhiking, boring boyfriend, gay best friend, prostitution, several beatings, a mob hit, sugar daddy, user boyfriend, a montage of Jacqueline with all her endless tricks, interracial marriage, drug overdose and a wild criminal arrest.
Jacqueline's performance is mediocre and she looks a bit bored at times. Joseph Cotten makes an appearance and he looks much older than his years. Jim Brown is surprisingly good as Jacqueline's husband and Ed Flanders does well in a sleazy role. Ramon Bieri was amusing as a ruthless mobster.
The ending was hilarious and added to the film's camp.
Unkissed Bride (1966)
Mother Goose A Blah-Blah
This was the only film Jack H. Harris directed and it's a good thing he never directed again. He also wrote it and the script is terrible. The actors look like they are improvising the entire time and there is no comic timing at all. Tommy Kirk looks uncomfortable kissing a woman and I was uncomfortable having to look at his nipples several times. This should have been a campy fun film, but it is just a silly bore.
Rich, Young and Pretty (1951)
Deep in the Heart of Paris
There are a few good songs in this movie, but most are as forgettable as the characters. Wendell Corey is not convincing as a Texan and looks hungover during the movie. He also cannot sing and does a terrible version of 'Deep in the Heart of Texas'. The characters are all shallow and Jane barely cares that Danielle deserted her as a child.
I did like Hans Conried as a pushy waiter and the Four Freshmen have a nice musical number. Worth a look if you like any of the stars or you are a big fan of the genre.
Toys Are Not for Children (1972)
Camp and the ultimate dysfunctional family
I thought the film did a wonderful job of being humorous and serious at the same time. The horrible chemistry between the parents made poor Jamie an emotional cripple and I really did feel bad for her. Most of the characters are exaggerated and there was humor to be found in all of them. Seeing Pearl expose her nipples was particularly funny and I laughed out loud at that.
I love movies where all the characters end up unhappy and this film certainly accomplished that.
Playgirl (1954)
For Shelley fans only
For the first 50 minutes, Playgirl is nothing but cliches and cardboard characters. Finally, Shelley slaps Colleen and all hell breaks loose. Shelley goes on a reign of terror and this film was brought to life. There is entertainment in Playgirl, but the wait was much too long.
American Crime Story: Do You Hear What I Hear? (2021)
Cheese log
I love this episode because of Linda's Christmas party. I can't believe so many people showed up. Jenny C. Paul eating a cheese log was the highlight and I hope she gets an Emmy nomination.
The Concorde... Airport '79 (1979)
Concorde Love Boat soon will be making another flight
As others have said, this movie is so bad it is unintentionally funny. Drones are sent to sink the Concorde on the first flight, yet most of the passengers cheerfully get back on the plane for the second leg of the flight. Of course, there is still plenty of time for hijinks and romance on both legs of the flight.
Since this is a disaster movie, there should also be some fatalities. As far as I could tell, nobody died on either leg and there are only two deaths in the film. Possibly the lowest death count in the history of modern disaster movies.
Please be aware that the scariest thing about the movie was a George Kennedy lovemaking scene. Jimmie Walker and Martha Raye supply the laughs.
SST: Death Flight (1977)
This film needed Charlton Heston
Charlton would have been an anchor for the film and steadied the ridiculous plot. The film also needed more crying babies and a little bit of humor. And there was no nun or priest on the flight!
I know this was a TV movie, but they could have spent a little more money and made the scenes where the plane was flying not look like a paper mâché model. They didn't even show the plane crash! And of course some of the survivors still had perfect hair after the crash.
As another reviewer stated, Tina Louise stole Farrah's hair style. Robert Reed had a less severe perm than he had on the Brady Bunch. Since this was 1977, perhaps some disco tunes in the background could have helped the film.
Desperate Characters (1971)
Not a ray of sunshine
This is one of the most depressing films I have ever seen and I loved every moment of it. It follows a couple through a somewhat ordinary but also traumatic day in their lives. They are staying together because they are used to each other, not because they really still love each other. Shirley MacLaine and Kenneth Mars give great performances!
The Boys in the Band (1970)
An emotional roller coaster
This is one of my favorite films of all time. Although some think it is dated, I think it still stands up as an examination of various types of people and how they deal with being gay in a world dominated by breeders. The first time I saw this I loved the first half, but felt uncomfortable with the second half when Michael turns on his friends. On repeated viewings ,I found I could relate to Michael's plight. He wanted to be loved and accepted by society, but he felt this would never happen since he was gay. And since he was miserable, he wanted to inflict his anger and misery on others. Of course this backfired and he ended up alone and with a hangover at the end of the movie. I agree with Michael Jones in that I have known people like "The Boys in the Band".A perfect 10 of a film!
