Bad Santa (2003)
Exactly what you expect -- and hilarious
Sometimes Billy Bob is so bad as Bad Santa that you squirm in your seat for how uncomfortable he makes you, but the trailers make it clear that this ain't no A Miracle on 34th Street. Billy Bob is perfect as the Bad Santa: a very, very, VERY bad person. His first line of the movie describes the depth of his self-loathing, which certainly is impressively deep.
But for all of its hatred and mean spirit (or maybe because of it), this is one hell of a funny movie, if darker than most black comedies. Sure, many of the situations are painfully contrived, but this is a heck of a funny movie. A dark black comedy, but one with more laugh-out-loud situations than any in recent memory. Just make sure not to bring the kids to this one, folks.
Dr. Benny (2003)
Squirmingly painful
If it was the intent of the writing then I should have given this film a higher rating than 2 out of 10, but I was so embarrassed for the roles that the actors played that I was literally writhing in my seat out of discomfort. Very little reason was given for the bizarre circumstances of the movie (young doctor with his own practice? and he can't get girls?) but that didn't sink it so much as the silly situations that the characters found themselves in. Likeable performances by Tim Dowling and Jennifer Jostyn, at least.
