North & South (2004)
stellar performances and story
This is one of the best, if not the best period mini-series to come out of Britain in recent years. Being an avid Pride and Prejudice (and Colin Firth fan), this is better. Seeing the previews, I initially thought it was stuffy and just another period piece.....boy, was I wrong. I decided to give it another chance, rented the DVD and watched it in peace. It is amazing...acting, scenery, story, etc. It is simply mesmerizing. I read the book after watching the series and personally liked the series better. It was tighter and had more of Mr. Thornton than the book...and OH! can Richard Armitage convey more emotions in one look than in a hundred pages. Go rent it...better yet buy it. You will not be disappointed.
Pride & Prejudice (2005)
excellent film...not just a chick flick
I was hesitant to see this movie at first...being a died-in-the-wool Colin Firth fan. I was convinced that the mini-series was "the final incarnation" of Pride and Prejudice....I was wrong. This film is beautiful in all aspects: cinematography, acting and story. It humanizes the characters and livens things up with the acting, writing, costumes and sets. It was a breath of fresh air for a classic story! I was surprised by Kiera Knightly performance. She had big shoes to fill and was excellent. It was difficult going in to think of anyone other than Colin Firth portraying Darcy, but Matthew MacFayden did an amazing job! The acting was top notch across the board. Put your prejudice aside and see this film. I can't wait to see it again! It is just simply wonderful!
Batman Begins (2005)
Not just the best Batman
This is not just the best Batman movie, but one of the best movies I have ever seen period. In a word...EXCELLENT! Just go see it. George Lucas could learn something about story telling and choosing excellent writers, actors and director.
The characters are well developed and well acted. You actually care about them. The story and atmosphere are real. You get sucked in from the beginning and stay until the very last frame. Christian Bale IS Batman and Michale Cane does a great job as Alfred. The biggest surprise is Gary Oldman as a good guy. He should do it more often. Can't wait for the next installment!!
Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (2004)
Don't listen to the critics!
Don't pay any attention to the negative reviews. This is an excellent feel good movie! Go see it. You will not be disappointed. I have seen it 3 times and enjoyed it more with subsequent viewings. My husband who hates chick flicks also loved it. The audience laughed and cheered throughout the movie and everyone left the film with a smile on their faces. How many movies do that?
I read the book and I personally think that the film is orders of magnitude better. The story is tighter, with much less of Bridget's friends and mother (thank God!). The acting is first rate: Renee is Bridget, Hugh Grant is at his sleazy best and what to say about Colin Firth - fabulous! Firth delivers an amazing spot-on performance which really exposes Darcy's difficulties dealing with emotions and how he eventually manages to get past them to fight for the woman he loves. My only quibble is that Colin Firth could have had more screen time. He did however, have more time than in the first film. (I am biased, being a huge fan.)
If you want to be entertained and emerge from the theater with a smile on your face, just go see it. Nobody does romantic comedies better than the British!
Heat of the Sun (1998)
Best Mystery yet!
Loved the films. Best of the Mystery series to date. The stories and characters keep you glued to your set. I hope they plan more films in this series. Excellent entertainment.
