El Mariachi (1992)
Quality film, low prices!
10 April 2000
Anyone who has yet to see this film must! Whilst watching the film one must look at it in the context of it only having cost $7000. Rodriguez, a self taught master of the director's craft, who lacked the prerequisites to qualify for film school, decided to work his way into Hollywood on his own hand. The result is a masterpiece. Okay, so there are a number of repetitions evident in the film, he re-uses certain concepts over and over again in a bid to save money, but if one contextualises the situation then the true value of the film can be appreciated to a greater extent than just an appreciation of the plot. This man deservedly broke into Hollywood and has contradicted himself in that he now a mainstream filmmaker, a concept that he openly criticised just a few years ago.

What a disappointment!
5 June 1999
This film was supposed to be of the comedy genre, but it failed to create even the slightest giggle. The acting was bad and after being used to seeing Kelsey Grammer in the excellent T.V series 'Frasier'there was a great disappointment at the lack of laughs. Avoid this film if at all possible, even if you are a Grammer fan.

8MM (1999)
A film to make you think!
5 June 1999
This film was excellent! The plot's involvement with the porn industry would make anyone despise the industry. The film opens people's eyes to the filth that is present in our world today and may even spur people on to take some kind of action. The cinematography was very good and the camera was used effectivley. The editing was likewise! If the film was disturbing in a negatie way like some people have said then wouldn't the censors have it banned? 8 mm has a morale tale behind it that is clear enough for everyone to understand. See this film and learn!

'Kids' in Oslo?
4 March 1999
I saw Schpaaa at a Norwegian cinema where the home crowd greeted it with great enthusiasm, and with good reason too! The film, seemingly shot on low budget rests not on the trickery of the camera, but on the quality of the script. The film brings home the issue of the decay that is present on the streets of our cities today and uses the gritty realism of the lives of Oslo's less fortunate to the screen. The film shares similar traits with the 'Kids', has a similar subject matter and the filmic style can be seen as being closely related aswell. Surley this film would have been commended by Mr Bazin if he were alive today. If you have the opportunity, regardless of language barriers, see this film.
