Brigadoon (1954)
Missing Lots of Great Songs
21 October 2004
This is an OK film as musicals go, however, I've done the stage show, and this movie is missing lots of great songs from the show. Let's face it, the movie was tailored to Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse because they are better dancers than singers. As a stage show, this is a heavy vocal show, and the 2 leads, Tommy and Fiona, almost really have to have classical training as singers. You miss the Fiona character singing Waiting' for My Dearie and Heather on the Hill. You hear these melodies in the background of the movie score, but it's just not the same. And the Meg character is almost non-existent. She has 2 great songs and is the comic relief in the stage show, but you don't get to hear those in this movie. So, for me, this movie misses the mark.

Peter Pan (1960 TV Movie)
Cheeseboy obviously has no clue....

what the medium for this production was. It was one of the first Broadway stage productions that had been duplicated exactly for television. The idea was ahead of it's time, and also has preserved Mary Martin's and the rest of the cast's memorable performances which otherwise would have been lost forever. People today are too much into "special effects" instead of good down home theater. All of the performers perform admirably. My son cannot get enough of this video and I'm happy to say that I was able to obtain it when it was reissued a few years back. I wish we had more of this type of entertainment of the "classics". If anyone knows of any, let me know if at all possible.

They don't make movies like this anymore....
23 July 2004
And it's such a shame! This one has everything, it's a triple threat. Great acting, singing, and dancing. Great melodies and choreography. I just saw it again the other night, and it's as fresh as the first time. I can't believe it's 50 years old this year! If you haven't seen this one, shame on you. MGM always had the best musical movies and this is definitely one of them. Howard Keel is handsome and has a fabulous voice. He was truly leading man material. Jane Powell is just about as sweet as they come, and her voice is like cream. The brothers and "wives" are equally matched. The dance sequences are exciting and energetic they leave you gasping for air. This is a must see if you are a Broadway Movie Musical fan! A classic!

Old Dracula (1974)
PITIFUL!
11 June 2004
Someone, please, bite THEM and put them out of their misery....really bad acting, really bad plot, yuck, yuck, yuck! yucky! This one is just so bad I can't believe that David Niven even lent himself to starring in this. He must have been short on cash to star in this dog. Oh, and the music! It's this music that is really trying to be hip and disco, don't forget, this was made in 1974, the start of the disco era. There are not enough words to say how bad this movie is, but I keep having to say them because IMDB will not let me post unless I have 10 lines! Please, if you see this advertised on TV, do not watch! It is a big waste of your time. Unless you are stoned or something and then maybe you would laugh your head off. Otherwise, stay away! On a scale of 10, I give it a 0!

Don't know why no one knows this is a great movie!
19 December 2003
I don't know why this movie didn't make it as a hit, I thought it was well acted and it had a kind of film noir feel to it. The cinematography was great as were the F/X. The acting was just the right mixture of seriousness and tongue in cheek and very well portrayed. The period costumes were great. It's great entertainment. This movie is better than the sex, degradation, and destruction that's usually on the screen these days! Who knows what ideas lurk in the minds of the populace!

He Got It In the End...
24 October 2003
Warning: Spoilers
Spoiler!!! I don't think the previous review is totally accurate, it's a formula film for this kind of genre. The character of the best girlfriend/husband's girlfriend was very typical..but, I liked seeing the husband get it in the end!

Weddings are the same in any ethnic group!
10 October 2003
I was totally charmed by this movie. Many people in the Western world think that Eastern people are "different". This movie shows that every family no matter what their ethnic background go through the same angst and have the same wedding jitters as anyone around the world. These were totally likable characters. The slipping in and out of English and Indian languages didn't bother me at all. It was good that there were subtitles. This was a totally feel good movie with the right amount of adversity and drama, mixed with comedy and romance. I think it's a great family film.

Entertainment at it's best
30 September 2003
This was a great movie! It had comedy, drama, and camp! It really moved. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Not your regular run of the mill hero and underdog story. There were laughs and tears throughout. Definitely one of the better films of the 90's. Baz Lurhmann is a cutting edge director with fresh ideas that I hope we see more of in the years to come.

This one was a woof, woof, bow wow!

Seldom have I seen a more boring and slow moving movie than this one. And such a shame since I really like Robin Williams and Shelley Duval. The dialogue couldn't have been more banal, and who was the composer of those God awful songs? I would put this one on the 250 worst movies of all time. On a scale of 1 - 10, a -2!

ROLIE POLIE OLIE

My son is 2 years old, and this is his favorite show. I know that when I sit him down in his chair to watch this, he will not move and I can get chores done during this half hour. He wakes up asking for Olie, Olie! I almost wish it was on all day!

Grease 2 (1982)
This howls all the way to the pound!

How can a musical movie be cast with people who can't sing? It just boggles the mind. What could the casting director been thinking of? Especially when you are casting a sequel that you have no doubt will be compared to the first movie. Some of the actors had so many effects on their singing voices (I guess to make it tolerable to listen to), and it was still impossible to hide the fact that they just sang flat, had no viable range, and basically were really not bona fide singers. Besides the fact that the songs were so inane it was pathetic. I'm sure some of the actors like Michelle Pfeiffer and Maxwell Caulfield (mostly stage work these days, Broadway, et al) who still have a career in acting actually cringe when they know this movie will be on TV. Lorna Luft's (the only real singer in the group) mom (Judy Garland) must have been rolling when this one hit the screen. This one was a definite bow wow.

Interesting turn, on Turn of the Screw..........
9 February 2001
In agreement with the other comments, I too was skeptical with Valerie Bertinelli in the part of the governess in basically an all British film. But she was surprisingly very good. I also agree that this was a very scary movie. The effects were great, not overboard. The actor portraying Peter Quint was diabolical looking. Think about how difficult it is to act without being able to speak....very interesting. Diana Rigg, as always was great in her role. The children were okay, the boy had a tendency to squint, but when his eyes were open, he was a very handsome child. The film location was perfect for this type of movie, kind of pseudo-gothic. If you like horror, I would definitely recommend this movie.

Mixing Fiction with True Stories
20 June 2000
I think I was one of the few people that waited for this movie to come out on video before I saw it. I don't know why. I think maybe because I knew what the end would be. Just like in Romeo and Juliet, you know what the end is going to be, and you can't help but hope the end is going to be different than you know it to be and you just can't help watching it. Mixing the fictional story of Rose and Jack, with the true life people who really sailed on the Titanic was done quite well. I can tell you, watching the very detailed sinking of the ship probably only gave the viewers a 20% feeling of horror that the actual passengers had, especially third class. How they put people in the ships by class really irritated me, a sad fact but true. Putting only 12 people in a boat that could have held 60-70 when they were already short of lifeboats was incomprehensible. It seems to me, that even after 80 years, generations of people have never gotten over the sinking of this ship, and they probably never will. The fascination of the Titanic and her passengers will outlive time.

Gag Me!

I thought Phoebe Cates' put upon accent was god awful. This was truly a piece of trash. I cannot believe that great actresses like Angela Lansbury, Brooke Adams,et al, lent their names to this travesty. If you see this on the TV schedule, pass it up!
