Filmmaker Emma Cooper had to turn her notifications off.
The director of Netflix’s “Depp v. Heard” knew that by diving back into the trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, her latest project would attract a lot of commentary online. After all, the six-week defamation case between one of the most famous celebrities on the planet and his rising star ex-wife was televised live with viewers around the world consuming explosive testimony, including from both actors who accused each other of domestic violence. In the end, the jury voted in Depp’s favor with Heard ordered to pay him $10 million in damages, and ultimately settling their long-running legal battle for $1 million.
Given the high-profile and polarizing nature of her doc’s subject matter, Cooper was not entirely surprised that Team Johnny and Team Amber commenters took issue with the mere existence of the docuseries.

Lucie relocated to Japan and started working as a hostess at a restaurant in Tokyo, but after merely three months, she mysteriously disappeared. Through an extensive investigation into the disappearance of Lucie Blackman, the shocking revelation of a stone-cold murderer and sexual predator lurking in the streets of Japan surfaced.
In this documentary, the account of the events surrounding Lucie Blackman’s disappearance is discussed and revisited, featuring a grieving father, Tim Blackman, who did everything in his power to bring his daughter back but found himself entangled in a feud with the Tokyo police. This nearly 23-year-old murder case was once major news, but only a few people outside these countries —the UK and Japan—are aware of it. However, this is where Netflix takes the initiative to...

The as-yet-untitled show comes from Empress Films and will blend archive with new research and interviews to revisit Dando’s life, career legacy and a death that remains one of the most notorious unsolved murders of the 20th century.
In April 1999, Dando was shot dead outside her home in London prompting the biggest ever murder inquiry conducted by the Metropolitan Police and the country’s largest criminal investigation since the hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper. Yet, with 2,000 potential suspects identified, her killer has still not been found. Dando was an English journalist, television presenter and newsreader who spent most of her career at the BBC.

Chicago – The movie star Marilyn Monroe, arguably the brightest star in the history of Hollywood, led a life of triumph and tragedy, up to and including her death in 1962. The recent Netflix release of “The Mystery of Marilyn Monroe: The Unheard Tapes” – directed by Emma Cooper – is a documentary that seeks truth, through never-heard-before audio interviews.
The tapes in the title are a cache of audio interviews that were conducted by Anthony “Tony” Summers from 1982 through 1985, as he created the Marilyn biography book “Goddess,” which was released in 1985. Nearly 40 years later, Summers and Cooper publishes the audio again for this new doc, a fresh look at the secrets he had revealed, with people who were still alive in the ‘80s – only 20 years after Monroe’s death – willing to talk about the actress and her mysterious demise.

Vice reported nearly £160 million ($222 million) in revenues across its U.K. businesses in 2019, with “Gangs of London” producer Pulse Films driving the company’s production gains.
Filings posted to the U.K.’s Companies House reveal that Vice U.K. revenues — which span Vice U.K. Limited, covering digital and Virtue, as well as Pulse Films, Vice U.K. TV, Studios and other commercial entities — were up 50% on 2018 figures (£106 million).
Meanwhile, operating profits grew to more than £18 million ($25.1 million) in 2019, marking a 163% year-on-year growth. This was driven by a diversified digital and commercial business that includes the likes of i-d and Virtue as well as Paradise and Edition Worldwide, but the main driver was record growth from the Thomas Benski and Marisa Clifford-owned Pulse Films, which posted £62 million in revenues — a 43% boost on 2018 figures.

Netflix has provided a small insight into its most-watched shows of the year in Britain and beyond. While it did not publish any actual data, the lists provide an intriguing glimpse into viewing behavior on the streamer.
Originals TV shows including The Disappearance Of Madeleine McCann, Sex Education, The Witcher dominated the list of most popular releases in the UK this year, while The Irishman and Murder Mystery were among the films that featured.
But conspicuous by its absence was season three of The Crown, which did not make the list of most-watched releases, nor did it figure in Netflix’s rundown of its top series, where UK shows like Black Mirror and Top Boy figured.
The Left Bank Pictures drama is widely considered to be Netflix’s flagship UK show, with season three being launched on November 17 with a major press and marketing blitz as a whole new cast,...

Netflix has unveiled its most popular titles internationally with true-crime doc The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann topping the UK list and Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston comedy Murder Mystery leading in Australia.

The streamer hasn’t officially revealed the methodology, but the list is thought to have been based on the number of accounts in each country that have watched at least two minutes of a title during its first 28 days on Netflix this year. Netflix is famously tight-lipped when it comes to revealing how many people are tuning in to its endless supply of movies and TV series, though the streaming giant does occasionally toot its own horn when one of its titles does especially well. Now the company is experimenting with a weekly list of its most-watched offerings in the UK, with nature docuseries “Our Planet” topping the first edition.
In a Twitter thread, the company announced that it will be releasing such lists on a weekly basis from here on out. To compile them, “we look at the most-watched individual season of a show, film or special (regardless of when it launched). ‘Watched’ means members finished at least 70% of one episode.”
“It’s a test as we want to make sure this information is useful for you,” Netflix added. “So we may tweak it in the weeks ahead. eg. we’re not including kids right now.

It's one of the most distressing cold cases of the past several years: the vanishing of Madeleine McCann, a 3-year-old British girl who disappeared while on vacation with her family in Portugal back in 2007. The case was never solved and has been complicated by mishandled evidence, false leads, and shifting suspicions. As part of the recent resurgence in true-crime documentaries, Netflix has produced a new documentary exploring the case, The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann. The documentary revisits several potential theories about Madeleine's disappearance, including some of the most widespread theories that have circulated in the decade since her disappearance. From the horrifying to the tragically mundane, here are five theories that attempt to explain what really happened on the night Madeleine disappeared.

Many recent true-crime documentaries have focused on violent crimes that made scandalous headlines in real life. However, Netflix's new documentary The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann tackles a different approach: it focuses on an unsolved disappearance from over a decade ago. Madeleine McCann was only 3 years old when she was presumably kidnapped from the villa where she and her family were staying on vacation. The case drew international attention, not just because of its tragic nature, but because of its international location.
The McCann family, who lived regularly in England, was on a spring break vacation in Praia da Luz, Portugal, a popular resort town in the south of the country, when Madeleine disappeared in May 2007. The town was especially popular among British expats and tourists, like the McCanns. They were staying at a privately owned apartment, 5A Rua Dr Agostinho da Silva, owned by a British landlord, that was...
