The wheels on the bus...
Pjtaylor-96-1380447 March 2021
'Below Zero (2021)' is a thriller in which a prison transport bus is attacked by a mysterious stranger, leaving its passengers - a police officer and the inmates he's transporting - trapped inside. It's a straightforward sort of thing but it does exactly what it needs to, proceeding at a fairy propulsive pace and providing several engaging action scenes. It's often exciting and suspenseful, with a variety of enjoyable set-pieces, and it comes together in a satisfying way that blurs the line between right and wrong. It's a little predictable, but that doesn't matter too much. Neither does the fact that it features a few logical inconsistencies. It's an entertaining experience from start to finish. 7/10

Better than expected.

Warning: Spoilers
This movie shouldn't have a lot going for it (in terms of settings), but it somehow manages to keep the story interesting. All logical questions I asked myself while watching, were answered either in earlier scenes or a little later. These answers never came out of the blue and always fit the story. The logical question were also answered by showing rather than telling. This helped create a great sense of tension which made the twists of the story even more enjoyable. The movie felt like a more plot heavy version of Con Air with better characters!

A decent to good Spanish movie that I recommend watching!

Great movie? No. Wasted time? No

Warning: Spoilers
It's the sense of justice it saves the film.

Up to twenty minutes before the end I was watching an average claustrophobic movie with good acts, fast tempo, but weak plot and some holes upon it. But when the explanation of the hunting come to the light the following actions of the cop saves the whole movie. It's not a masterpiece of course, but the way that things put themselves to their place make Below Zero a good film to spend your night.

For families, we often take extra miles, and it feels rational as well even when it's not
ridi-arahan14 March 2021
What worked: I would say the technical aspects of the movie is done well. The movie sets a very promising mood for the narrative, keeping us intact and intuned with the atmosphere that we are going to experience.

What did not work: Like we sometimes say, the movie could have been much better if only the writing was done more carefully. Screenplay is average but the execution missed the mark. The scenes could have been better if choreographed well, or scenes were kept as real as possible. The intend of the movie is not missed but since the makers set some specific tone of the movie we expect it throughout the movie. Somewhere after an opening half, the movie starting losing its grip and felt more like a cliche movie with usual sub plots, unrealistic situations and sometimes a bit melodramatic. We can say it's a flawed writing, some plot-holes and many possibilities for more convincing scenarios. Final verdict: one time watch

Spanish Con Air
danielcereto29 January 2021
First, even the movie is full of cliches and predictable the settings and action scenes are pretty well executed. Acting is just OK from the full cast. Second, It could have been far better just with a more risky script. A lot of weird situations make the most part of the movie unbelievable. Last, looks like the directors were inspired by movies like Con Air. Good point. So, if you like non pretentious action movies, with non twisted script, this one is for you.

Spanish thriller
yusufpiskin7 February 2021
Spanish thriller is never disappointing, this movie is quite interesting too. Basically this movie sets on a limited timeline (the main plot happen in one cold night) and limited location (the prison bus and the empty village). Despite all the limitation, the director able to generate suspense and tension throughout the movie. The closing act is a bit disappointing though with all of the hesitation around the antagonists. After all, it's still a movie worth to watch.

Moderately Surprised By This one...
wandernn1-81-68327417 April 2021
I really wasn't expecting a pretty decent story from this one. Felt like a decent use of time for once on Netflix. 7/10.

I wish Netflix would specify what language the film is in.

Nonsensical action story not worth watching
gliderguy31 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Let's face it: NOTHING about this story makes any sense which makes the good reviews a mystery. A disturbed father wants to interrogate a prisoner responsible for his daughter's death. So what does he do? Attacks a prisoner transfer bus he is on, killing multiple guards and other prisoners in the process. The irony is that this ex-cop complains that the perp will just be released back to society w/o justice. Really? So, why not wait until he is released? I could pick apart other incongruences in the story, but why bother?

This is Spain not Wildwest America
epic_nerull13 February 2021
A lot of bad reviews seems to be from USA where everyone goes around with rifles and automatic weapons. In Spain no one can use firearms, not even the police unless under serious threat. In fact in Span a policeman can only unload his weapon if he is shot first. Taking that into consideration, this is a good story and it seems wildly based on a real Spanish case.

confusing, terribly bad plot
ttfrey2 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Sorry, I've rarely seen such a confusing, terribly bad plot. Nothing is right at all. Here some examples: > A truck prisoner transporter can be brought to a stop with a simple tire claw. > Policemen Garcia -Martin- and Montesino get out of the truck, although the situation was unclear and critical. In addition, they do not inform the head office or coordinate their approach with their superiors. > The glazing of the prisoner transporter is a simple safety glass, which can be destroyed with several shots. > The tires are apparently simply pneumatic tires, which means that every nail can bring the transporter to a standstill. Huh? > The transport is not radioed by the police headquarters at regular intervals. > The prison where all prisoners are to be transferred makes no attempt to contact the transport because they are late. OK? > Petrol can simply be fed into the cells from the outside and set on fire. > Former policeman Miguel kills his colleagues, even though he just wants to know where his daughter was buried. > Miguel can overwhelm a column with simple weapons, ok, mmmh, but then he has no plan how to get to the person who is his target. He makes the inmates an offer ... and that's it? > Everyone involved is warmly dressed and inside the prisoner transporter, but pretending that they are about to freeze to death. > How does Miguel know that he can drive such a heavy van into the middle of a frozen lake? > Miguel wants information from Nano and satisfaction for the death of his daughter, but then he wants to kill everyone, so drown in the lake? That means he is doing such collateral damage to just one person. So it doesn't make any sense either. > Miguel is on the other side of the lake and can suddenly transform himself into a village. As the? > Nano, the boy in question and who is the real target, crouches against a wall and only whines to be shot and sees no other escape route. For real? > Miguel knows that Nano is unarmed and yet he only shoots at Nano from about 20 m away from the house without attempting to approach Nano. > and, and, and, .... It is clear that there are logic holes in other films too, but it must not be implemented so sloppily that I can question every, really every single scene in the film and that is a real one Insult to any movie fan. This is a work of oblivion. Minus 5 points for such a sloppy, ridiculous work.

Solid smart entertainment

Very well-paced. Believable action scenes. Solid storyline. Good acting. Another example why I'll take a subtitled "foreign" movie over the average American attempt at similar filmmaking.

Boredom in the ice
DLochner4 February 2021
The description of the film is so exciting. In the end the film unfortunately turns out to be a boring crime story. A prisoner transport is ambushed, the characters seem empty and hollow, and the actually wonderful setting in the icy cold can no longer compensate for the boredom. What a shame, could have turned out to be good.

I could say when I saw main actor from movie "The Occupant" I thought it's going to be good movie. The beginning looked very strong and it got my attention from the first minutes. After about half of movie it got a little bit average and lost my attention. To sum up, it had amazing started but it didn't keep it till the ending. Good movie, I would recommend it for action fans. Strong 7 from me and the best movie of 2021 that I've seen so far.

Sense of justice saves this Assault on Precinct 13 (sort of) revisit
samuelregueira30 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
SPOILERS FOR BOTH THIS FILM AND MIGUEL ÁNGEL VIVAS'S 'TU HIJO'

I was astonished to find very harsh reviews in this film, non other than a mild revisit of the very classic Carpenter's flick Assault on Precinct 13, with his own ideas and highlights. If you enjoy either that classic or the Fishburne remake, you may find quite entertaining this film, with his own pros and cons.

The movie is far from being a masterpiece but lands in many aspects. The interpretations are superb (Javier Gutierrez hits another score in his career, Patrick Criado also succeeds in his role, Karra Elejalde is as great as usual and Luis Callejo proves he needs more than supporting roles to prove his best, he is an underrated actor in Spain that will add many layers to any character he portrays, even if this Napoleon Wilson in particular, a very difficult one to draw, could have been more consistent and less contradictory in some of his actions).

Also, the setting in the armored van helps on the claustrophobic tone the director Lluis Quilez explicitly looks for and, even if not always hitting in the mark (specially while transmitting the freezing cold, which looks crucial given the title of the movie), the intentions make up for the final result which, all in all, is a very enjoyable and harmless action/suspense film to watch.

As another reviewer pointed out, the sense of justice in the end saves a dangerous spot the movie barely looks at. See, like Miguel Angel Vivas's 'Tu hijo' (Your son), the twist of the movie relies on one of the characters being a rapist in a gang that ended up abusing of a young girl. While that movie focused on the revenge of the father of one of the abusers towards the avengers of the girl, this one makes the father's girl the responsible of the killings, even if not voluntarily, looking for the responsible of his daughter's murder. In Spain we recently found many real-life cases that shattered the society as a whole and sparked the feminist movement, and the approach of some of the national (male) filmmakers to this controversial matter doesn't look always right. This particular film kind of dangerously gazes at that abyss but, luckily, at the end gives a sort-of-satisfactory closure (even if it may be too bloodily-gratuitous to some viewers and lacks of feminine perpective, both in front and behind the camera) which justifies the approach taken and, as it has been said, gives the viewer a better sense of justice (almost necessary in a piece of fiction).

An enjoyable Spanish flick and a step forward for his director. Definitely a nice way to spend a cold evening.

Not bad, good time killer
Nyc_Don_DrKing30 January 2021
It was a decent movie bout a cop havent to come to the realization of what would he do, if the shoe was on his foot. Once he finds out why all the madness is happening. Could it have been better yeah maybe, but it was a film where I had no hopes going in, which turned out to be decent.

Great acting, poor writing!
tom-procter871 February 2021
This could have been a really good film if it wasn't for the silly plot holes and terrible writing. The ending is great but it just wouldn't happen like that... such a shame. Barely above average

Worth watching
otnememento-230 January 2021
Suspense from beginning to end. Not easy to find a decent movie nowadays on Netflix but this is one of them. Javier Gutiérrez is a very popular Spanish actor and he is always great. All the cast are very good here actually. The movie gives new clues as it moves forward and at the end you complete the puzzle of what is going on. I am not going to give anything away so I'll just say this is a really tense and well done movie. Worth a watch. I am surprised it has such a low rating. I'd recommend this movie hands down.

Great!
bluepink4 February 2021
It kept me on the edge of my seat, and the pacing was great. You'll enjoy it as long as you're not overly fussed about realism - because a lot of the events pertaining to the main storyline, would never happen in real life. But it didn't bother me. It's not quite a 7/10 perhaps because of the plot holes & because it's not a *must watch*, but it's still a decent movie.
