Confusing and surprisingly (disappointingly) straight
athinagk5 August 2021
My girlfriend and I had been wanting to watch this movie for some time, since we're lesbians that love representation, so we were very excited. We ended up severely disappointed.

So many plot holes. Sub-plots that made no sense, nor contributed anything. Characters that were pointless. Drama that happened out of nowhere and was resolved just as fast, without any sort of explanation.

The only thing we liked were the lesbian grandmas, who ended up being side-characters in their own movie, which ended up focusing on selfish and messy characters. Very disappointing.

Confusing rom-com devolves into chaos
kruiwagen20007 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I wanted to like this movie. Who doesn't want a heart-warming story about two grandmothers who have loved each other their whole lives and get married in their seventies? There are so many plot-holes in this story I had trouble getting through this short movie whithout turning it off.
  • Of course, a movie must have some conflict to move the story forward, but the source of the conflict is very confusing to me. One granny's granddaughter, the other granny's son and an open-minded priest are SO VERY against this marriage that they keep saying they shouldn't marry, and it escapes me why? The only source of conflict is that they say "the village won't accept it". This is never shown by the way, so we just have to take their word for it. Is Spain really this small-minded towards lesbian grandmothers that because "the villagers" will not understand it, two 70-year old best friends can't marry?
  • By the way, what is never even questioned is the multiple relationships between other nationalities, a son who converts to islam, changes his name and turns up to introduce everyone to his muslim wife (who never wears a hijab except in the first scene by the way). Also suddenly a congolese man shows up in the last 10 minutes who is apparently dating the mother. All this seems perfectly normal to everyone, so apparently it's only the 70-year old lesbians that are not acceptable?
  • Also, the subplot about the girl marrying a Scottish man with bigoted parents goes nowhere and from the first minute it's obvious what's going to happen.
  • Do you really not recognize a man you knew your whole life up till 9 years ago when you shared a passionate kiss, just because his hair is a little longer? Also, they do a classic "She's all that" because once the guy cuts off just a little bit of hair and does a little less gorilla-impressions he is suddenly the man of her dreams? I'm exagerating a little, but I was just annoyed with how much this movie is underestimating it's audience.

So many things I found annoyingly un-credible. They could have made an interesting rom-com if they really had focused on the very Christian town being against a gay marriage, (which is legal in Spain since 2005 by the way) and the pope saying "who am I to judge gay people" (which he said in 2013), but this subplot is never really worked out. It just devolves into a screaming chaotic mess that gave me migraines, after which the whole story is wrapped up in the blink of an eye, and everybody apparently lived happily ever after.

Scenery is beautiful
wisewebwoman12 March 2021
And most of the cast convincing apart from the one who played Celia, a grotesque performance, way over the top.

Also the main character, a lawyer is utterly wrong for the role and her evolution as a more caring person never believable.

That and along with the son of one of the main characters who goes through a transformative evolution at the speed of a bullet.

Too much slapstick and faux snobbery and a couple of other characters (the supposedly gay grandson marries a Muslim woman?) as filler with no purpose, much shouty bits and slapstick add up to an over the top movie which should have been a whole pile better.

The dialogue races and with subtitles it's hard to follow but overall not missing much.

I'd like more movies about old women but this would never be part of my collection. 5/10

I wanted to like it

Warning: Spoilers
As a member of the LGBTQ community I really wanted to like this movie. It started out promising with gorgeous shots on the beautiful island of Lanzarote but it went all downhill from there. There was way too much craziness involved and it was not the funny kind.

Here come the spoilers: One of the lesbian couple was depicted as demented, her son as completely insane at first who then cuts his hair and looks and acts suddenly more "normal". I don't know what the point of the crazy niece was, she added nothing to the film. There were more way more romantic hetero scenes than lesbian ones, what else is new. The storyline was not realistic at all and unfortunately it was not funny either. 2 stars that are solely for the beautiful shots of Lanzarote and Porto. The acting was awful as well, sorry to say.

A great idea gone to waste
cereyese28 January 2021
Great idea, great locations, some great actresses.... all gone to waste. The character of Eva is in my opinion very badly executed, she is sort of irritating and unrealisticly childish. Her personal evolution comes from nowhere and goes nowhere, and although the storyline comes from a very interesting place, the movie just doesn't cut it. It seems that someone had a fantastic idea and then somehow just didn't manage to transform it into what it could have been. I feel disappointed because I feel that with better direction it could have been a great film. Rosa María sarda, Veronica forque and Candela Peña are way too good for this.

Imperfect, but fun, comedy of manners
steviepics-126 January 2021
A charming if imperfect comedy of manners. Performed with a little too much gusto at times, but it still came across as sincere.

Major error with the Scots storyline though. Firstly, who knows what they wearing, but they'd not make it into Scotland wearing that get up. Secondly, Scotland voted firmly against BREXIT. Scots are very anti British/English.

Boring, disappointing movie.
elisabeth-santana28 February 2021
Was excited to watch a light-hearted comedy, with a visionary theme, but felt robbed my time and patient. First, nothing about this family seems real, but a mixing of alternative life style people to back up a terrible developed (and terrible boring protagonist). They don't have a real space to bring meaning to the movie or to shine. The conservative family is even more boring and shallow and their connections to the main character doesn't make a sense. Even if they tryed to imply she was marrying to escape her origins. The girl's new romantic interest should be interesting, but isn't. They lack chemistry, even if they had a almost sexual relationship with each other. The lesbian couple doesn't have chemistry either. I've seem shallow movies before, but at least they were entretaining. Neither the crazyness brought laughter, nor the added drama brought tears or deepness to the plot. I just jumped scenes after a while so I didn't felt it was a unwatched movie. Don't recomend it and after think it throught I give up trying to give it a second try.

Very cute Spanish movie. No explicit Lesbianism in this movie, just a lovely comedy. Don't believe the low rates. See this great movie and make your own judgement.

Fun and sympathetic family comedy with veteran and attractive Spanish actors
ma-cortes15 November 2022
A promising young lawyer (Ingrid García Jonsson) schemes to marry the wealthy son of an important and ultraconservative Scottish family . She is promised to marry Stuart (Leander Vyvey) , heir of the aristocratic and rich clan Macdonald , but the happy plans are in danger due to grandma decides to marry her eternal girlfriend with the subsequent scandal about a lesbian marriage on the really traditional Scottish family. As she goes to Lanzarote , Canary Islands, to find out the mess . Helped by a stranger (David Verdaguer) after missing the bus at the airport , Eva backs home where she joins with Sofía (Rosa Maria Sardà) , Celia (Verónica Forqué) and Perla, Eva's (Candela Peña) mentally disabled cousin who lives in the house cared by her aunt Sofía ; but things go wrong.

Nice and nutty comedy starred by two queens of the Spanish comedy : Verònica Forqué and Rosa Maria Sardá whom is dedicated the film, along with two new stars in the recent cinema : Ingrid Garcia Jonsson and David Verdaguer . Funny and diverting Spanish romantic comedy with crazy events , amusement and absurd situations that follow the politically correct style . This entertaining film packs amusement , comical situations , tongue-in-cheek , surrealist comedy including conventional pitfalls and anything else . Sitting in a strange middle ground between the completely absurd and the stylishly cool . This is another Spanish comedy romp , a bemusing story that contains lots of humor , entertainment , brief drama and involving a peculiar homosexual wedding . This is a slightly fun film with outlandish events , giggles , emotion , profanities , twists and love stories . The film moves in fits and starts most of which would be desirable , with more traps the viewer resists any kind , and some moments of enjoyment and others quite a few ridiculous . Humor is sometimes cheesy and gross-out with some naughty and picaresque situations . This is a special Spanish comedy from the 2010s with the usual ingredients such as wild humor topped with a little bit of original touches here and there and the tone of the film is light-hearted . It's an agreeable , moving film , adequately acted and concerning the narration about the relationship among family members , fiancée , fiancés , and brides . This is a typical and contemporary Spanish comedy in which characters are quite odd , grotesque and weird and the film races on at incredible speed . The film displays all kinds of ordinary stereotypes , resulting in an agreeable comedy , with an enjoyable message about the real importance of a good but dysfunctional family . On the surface, this ¨Salir del ropero¨ follows the wake of other similar movies about dysfunctional families and offbeat weddings , such as : ¨Señor, dame paciencia¨, ¨Hasta que la boda nos separe ¨ , ¨Tres Bodas de más¨ , ¨Bajo el mismo techo¨ , ¨En mejor verano de mi vida¨ , among others . Doesn't get much wrong , it looks okay , the comedy misunderstandings pile up in a reasonably amusing fashion and performance is acceptable . Stars two veteran , recently deceased actresses : Rosa Maria Sardà and Verónica Forqué who unfortunately committed suicide due to depression and two successful newcomers : Ingrid García Jonsson and David Verdaguer. And a lot of charming secondaries , such as : Candela Peña , Mónica López , Pol Monen , Alex O'Dogherty , Leander Vyvey , among others .

In ¨So My Grandma's a Lesbian!¨ stands out the evocative and colorful cinematography by José Luis Luis Alcaine who is deemed to be one of the best Spanish cameramen with a long and prestigious artistic career and Almodovar's ordinary cameraman , he has photographed successes such as ¨Volver¨ , ¨The bad education¨ , ¨The skin I live in¨ , and ¨Women on the verge of a nervous breakdown¨ . Along with the lively , sensitive and catching musical score by composer Lucal Vidal , a notorious musician who has composed various international productions . The motion picture was decently directed by Ángeles Reiné in her film debut . Getting Nominations in Almería International Short Film Festival 2020 Nominee Best First Film and ASECAN 2021 Nominee Award Best Supporting Actor Alex O'Dogherty.

A caricature of insincerity vs true acceptance
pedrototoro9 March 2021
I watched this movie yesterday and I really liked it. I don't think it was made to be realistic, instead I saw it like a caricature of us, humans. We crave for safety and order, but we also crave for love and acceptance. These things are often at odds, because each of us is a well of creativity and unpredictability. When we try to have a very orderly, predictable life we often need to lie, to others and ourselves.

I don't think this movie is a about sexual chemistry and things like that. I think it's about love and acceptance. It's about true stability, not about being able to predict how the future will be like, but the ability to know that some people will not abandon us, even when we make terrible mistakes. Instead, they'll try to understand. That's true security. I think this movie is about the most important topic of all: to be true to oneself. And it treats the subject in a light manner. Not a perfect movie, but I liked watching it!

Charming, uplifting and telenova
peterbruce0522 January 2023
I don't get the low ratings here. Hasn't anybody seen Spanish soap opera's before? This is not supposed to be realistic depiction. It's full of wonderful caricatures and archetypes, and it's a romp that is thoroughly fun to watch. We saw it with a bunch of friends who all enjoyed it immensely. The story arc embraces a wide variety of characters with extremely diverse backgrounds, sensibilities, and motivations who come together and mix it up with the film's goal being to spotlight, contrast, and exploit their goodness, fault lines, and vulnerabilities, and in the process bring out the best of each of these characters archetypes.
