Not a Horror Movie but Not that Bad
surgicalrn30 June 2020
I have seen movies that deserve a 1 rating or even a negative rating but not this movie. The Assent was a bit slow & absolutely not scary. I would not call it a horror movie but a psychological thriller. I went into it with very low expectations so maybe that's why I have a higher opinion than others but there is no way I would rate it a 1. I thought most of the acting was good, atmosphere was good, plot was believable & I watched it all the way without losing interest. Not a great movie, not a horror movie but not a movie I regret watching, better than a lot of the crap they make now days.

But the trailer was scary...!
ravenhair70214 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
$7.99...plus tax $8.54. That's what this movie cost me on PlayStation to rent. saw the trailer...showed it to my wife and we agreed to watch it. Don't get me wrong, I thought the special and very creepy effects were awesome. The acting was also very good. However, the story...eh, I don't know. I know people who write books and movie scripts like to throw in that "Twist" but at the end, it just seemed like, what was that? Really? I hate watching something that I think I have a handle on only to find out it wasn't really happening. Like Vanilla Sky. OH MY GOD, I hated that freaking movie. This wasn't a bad movie, but it wasn't great, either. Judge for yourself. Peace.

Poorly executed
zachsextra2 February 2020
The story had decent foundations and some good twists, but it was so poorly executed you could see every plot twist coming from a mile away. In the end most of the characters didn't matter at all, there's no resolution of any kind, the whole thing relied heavily on jump scares that didn't even work well, and you're left with more questions than answers. Overall a crappy movie in an oversaturated genre. This movie had no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

Truly amazing how bad this movie is.
sean_sp23 May 2020
Found this at Walmart and took a chance. Regrets. I know some people are dramatic with writing reviews but I can't believe this.

How does a movie like this get made so poorly and have a decent budget behind it? It has no pace, not a single good actor, and no story. It doesn't make sense at all lol

A wasted opportunity
Sir_AmirSyarif9 June 2020
Pearry Reginald Teo's 'The Assent' has a strong start, a convincing performance by its lead actor, and nice art direction, all of which competes with a script that fails to do anything interesting to breathe some life into a tired genre.

The Devil makes the sane, insane.
nogodnomasters26 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Joel Clarke (Robert Kazinsky) part-time mechanic, dad, widower, and schizophrenic sees things. He believes his son is possessed. Father Lambert Bowman (Peter Jason and not Malcolm McDowell) recently released from jail is going to perform it.

The characters and dialogue were not well written. The twist could have had an early clue. This is just another me-too exorcism film that lacks the special effects that make them memorable. Has Tatum O'Neal hit bottom yet?

Guide: No swearing, sex, or nudity.

Why all the low reviews?? It's decent
stephenherman6 March 2020
All this movie needed was another pass on the script. The twist at the end is really cool but you can see it coming from a mile away. The writer/director needed to work on the script to hide it more so it wasn't so obvious. Had they done this properly it would have raised this movie up a bunch of notches.

It's not really scary though it has some great creepy atmosphere going on. Some of the visuals are great, particularly the demon with all those faces and the creepy gyrating woman. But overall not horrible. It doesn't deserve such low scores.

Boring. Bad ending
jianreh12 January 2020
Boring... So slow I fall zzz 3 times and had to skip forward...

Ending makes no sense either.... I'd think you have to sign a contract or some sort with blood to assent but it turns out it's a quick yet/no and he is done... Stupid waste of time

Agree to what
kosmasp5 April 2021
There are movies that may have lost from the get go. Can you imagine any other movie .. like the Exorcist? I mean I know I can't. And yet I give this an 8 rating? I know sounds too crazy to be true. But it is because this really low budget attempt is not another copycat. It does things differently and it does them quite well in my humble opinion.

And that is not an easy feat ... actually while you should be able to see certain things coming, I would like to believe that the movie still has a few surprises up its sleeves. It also is very well shot and the tension is there from start to finish ... the ending maybe slacking a little bit ... still more than just a good effort! And very well played to by everyone involved!

Decent but familiar
rivertam2624 May 2020
I bought this movie after having scene that scary ass trailer and the awesome poster. I wasn't disappointed, well maybe a little. It's the story of a single father played by a sexy Robert Kazinski of Hot Pursuit. Strange things begin happening in the house especially the appearance of a dope ass monster. And than his son begins to transform and can possibly be possessed. It's a familiar story. Its obviously limited budget wise but there's lots of cool touches especially the appreciated and impressive practical effects. There's also a somewhat surprising twist that is quite intriguing. All in all it's a familiar but decent watch that merits a light reccomendation, especially considering it's 4.99 to buy on Amazon streaming now.

don't even watch it to see how bad it is
ameliek8127 November 2021
This is definitely the worst movie I've ever seen. What makes it worse, it they basically replay the entire movie towards the end of it. As though we needed an explanation to know what was happening. It's not a mind bender, there's nothing surprising, other than how bad this is. I don't understand how an actor, or a director reads the script and says "yes, this is a project I'll take on!" There's no story, no character development, no arch, no climax. The acting is horrible, as is the directing, the editing, the visuals, everything about this sucks. It wouldn't even pass as a comedy, you know, how when a scary movie is bad, but you can still laugh at it? No. One thing it does do though, is if you're a screenwriter or would like to be one, it gives you hope. If something this bad can get made, and the put on Netflix, then you'll for sure be able to get yours done and distributed as well.

Ups and downs
brunovanael19 October 2021
There's a few pros and cons here. A new approach on exorcism yet lots of horror clichés and a twist at the end that was trying too much to make this stand out, decent acting for most scenes yet not all, sometimes great visuals like the shadow moving and then a laughable worm thing. Not that bad, but far from constant quality.

Another basic possession movie. I didn't even bother watching it in full. Don't lose your time here if you have already watched more than... like two or three horror movies.

It kept my interest...
jbarile200011 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I was entertained with curiosity, which is why I watch quite a few movies which received low reviews... Will this movie grab my interest ? I won't know unless I give it a shot..I basically choose to watch based on my attraction to the story line not by other opinions..so I ad my 2 cents over other ratings. Which at times are pretty spot on! First the acting is over emphasized trying to hard to be convincing....predictable outcomes of scenes .The Father's art is a give away to the invitation to evil however his disorder was quite obvious to be an atheist a open door to any form of evil. The ending explanation narrative was not needed..The Father's early diagnosis was an introduction to the events that unfolded. I watched to the end only out of curiosity ..a 4 rating for keeping my attention...

Movie has soul
mvike19 January 2020
The 3 star rating, and all the bad reviews I can't at ALL understand. This film is not the typical possession film, why not? Because it's not JUST about the jump scares, or the blood...I was VERY surprised that I grew to care about the characters in this movie, they really give us reason to care...this dad is struggling and not just the typical "I lost someone so I'm sad"...but he's suffering from a mental illness.

The movies sets all have a very dark and grim element to them, I guess to make us feel like we are in the characters gloomy world.

Okay, so the story is very solid, the acting is above average, the characters are very good...how about the heart of the movie? The demon possession?

LOVED IT!!! The scene when we first see the demon in the halway that has those strange spider like legs? I LOVED IT!!!! A+ for creature design, you never really get to understand what the demon looks like just because it's so abstract, it looks like something out of Silent Hill, and they did a great job!!!

So...HOW ON EARTH did this film get only a 3 star rating????? My only guess is because it's main audience was likely fans of "The Grudge", "Vatican Tapes" "Parabormal Activity" and all those other shallow, heartless, JUMP SCARE movies that don't make us care...they substitute story and character development with buckets of blood and jump scares.

This film is a shining example of originality in a sea of copy after copy. The demon is something I've never seen, the way the possessed persons eyes are, I've never seen that before either.

I'm VERY harsh and critical of haunting/possession films because they're always the same junk. This was different!!

Was it an amazing film?? No, I'm just in shock at the low rating and can't understand it at all.

Same mind bend... different cast...
AndyVanScoyoc20 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The father's schizophrenic...but wait, is the son gifted?

Or is he schizophrenic too? Wait...the father is the evil one, he's the one possessed?

Did the Priest and his assistant ever really exist?

WHY was the doctor the demon? The dad's the only schizophrenic she treats? But wait...was the dad only imagining that too?

If this all seems confusing and non sensical to you, then you have a good grasp on the "plot" of this film.

I don't often pay attention to "stars" or "reviews," because I've seen some REALLY GOOD movies that had only 3 stars but we're disliked for lack of t - n - a , sex or gore.

But in this case, I wish I had skipped this one.

Could have been good...wasn't. The scenes rolling during the credits were better than the entire movie.

Avoid...unless you like to be confused.

Great story and effects
sarahbenmagor1 July 2020
This movie was great for 2 Horror movie buffs like us. The way the story was filmed with A new directing style on effects were scary and original! We do wish the end wrapped up the story more but all in all, this was a great movie! Hard to find a good horror movie so this was a good surprise! We've taken note of the director and writers name. Looking forward to seeing more of his work! Totally recommend this movie.

Not perfect but different enough to be worth a watch.
button-719 June 2020
This is largely a slow movie and the twist are clear from the moment they take place. However the acting is overall solid and practical effects are worth checking out alone. It also doesn't rely on some of the overused visuals most possession movies like to use and the ending was great.

Sadly not good
fairlesssam5 September 2020
A film about possession and exorcism that feels bland, shallow and unengaging. A man, who suffers from mental illness, thinks his child is possessed. The setting is very grey and bleak, the father's situation is poor. He is an artist who's creations are dark and haunting imagery.

Not enjoyable for me.

Film of an almost embarrassing banality but with a really nice ending, only the ending saves this mediocre film beyond belief, without the ending the film is insignificant.

Run of the mill exorcism
kkmgirl-448-11198812 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Despite the mediocre acting, I might have enjoyed this more if the ghoulies were actually scary and there were WAY less acid-tripping camera effects. I literally struggled to watch the "schizo" and exorcism scenes because it bothered my eyes so much. It just got overbearing to have the Dad always wigging out- it took away from real story and character development. As such, other parts felt rushed or left out entirely- like how the mom died (it's alluded to but never spoken about) or the whole weird backstory of the priest who killed a boy (not sure how that really added anything). There's a lot of buildup to a very quick ending, with no real conclusion. I guess we're left to assume the dad died at the end?? It would have been cool to reveal the twist sooner and then play that out, but it was a missed opportunity. Instead, they just rehashed a bunch of prior scenes like we're too dumb to put the pieces together ourselves. I'll admit, before the twist, I was totally creeped out by the set design which almost made sense at the end, EXCEPT the babysitter mentioned it to the priest (maybe I'm wrong, but because I took it that way, it lessened the impact for me). But there was a lot of thought and effort put into the house which made for an icky atmosphere. I wasn't a huge fan of the acting (the dad's incessant schizoid/Polaroid episodes, Tatum's wooden performance, the priest.... ugh, he laid on the cheese thick). But for a low budget, it looked pretty good and I appreciate the effort put into trying to freshen an old theme. Definitely forgettable but at least it was quick and mostly painless.
