The next major Star Trek property to pop up after Star Trek: Lower Decks will be Star Trek: Section 31. It's the first ever non-theatrical film to be produced by the brand and it'll air exclusively on Jan. 24, 2025 via Paramount+. It's one of the most ambitious ideas that the franchise has ever produced, as it could be the next major wave of content for the Star Trek brand.
Especially as Star Trek's parent company, Paramount Global, goes through growing pains with its new corporate owners. Having a way to produce new Star Trek content without having to put in $300 million per season is a very attractive idea. It has to work, however, for it to be something that Paramount+ does more of.
We've heard rumors that there could be up to another two made-for-streaming films in the works, but we're not sure that's totally true. Though we're optimistic. Still,...

Everywhere you look, the advertising for Star Trek: Section 31 seems to paint the film as a clone of Guardians of the Galaxy, or SyFy's sleeper sci-fi series, Killyjoys. Both the Marvel film and the SyFy show featured a group of very talented but abnormal groups. One was just a group of ragtag members of a ship who fought crime, the other was a trio of bounty hunters.
Both relied on a level of snark and dry wit that most fans would see now as the "MCUification" of humor. Gone are jokes, now we're just innudated with wannabe Tony Stark types. The vibes that are coming off of Sar Trek: Section 31 seems to paint a similiar situation. We're looking at a movie that may very well trying to be it's own Guardians of the Galaxy.
Filled with humorous characters and snarky rejoinders. It may not be, but the previews...

Paramount+ unveiled a preview clip of the forthcoming third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds at New York Comic Con today, alongside the news that guest star Rhys Darby (Our Flag Means Death) would be aboard for the ride.
Based on the years Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) manned the helm of the U.S.S. Enterprise, the CBS Studios-produced series follows the leader and his team, which features Science Officer Spock (Ethan Peck), and Number One (Rebecca Romijn), in the years before Captain Kirk boarded the starship, as they explore new worlds around the galaxy.
While no release date is set, the new installment is set to debut in 2025. The series has already been renewed for a fourth season.
The three-minute clip follows the ship outmaneuvering and eventually outpacing enemy combatants. Its release follows an earlier preview shared in late July, alongside the news of Cillian O’Sullivan...

A few days ago, Paramount once again yanked the classic Star Trek films from Pararmount+ with no warning or explanation given. It is the umpteenth time that Paramount has made the bone-headed decision to break up the Star Trek collection; arguably one of the core selling points aside from the NFL, for fans to invest in Paramount+.
The removal has once again been met with groans from the fandom, who recognize this as a serious mismanagement of the Star Trek intellectual property (IP). It's also just another moment in time that fans can look to, put a pin on, and cite as a reason why they're losing faith in Paramount. With pending new ownership coming in, the hope is that the Skydance crew can stabilize the brand and get things back on course, but there is concern that there is no more goodwill left for the Paramount brand by the Star Trek faithful.

Paramount+ today debuted the official trailer for the fifth and final season of its hit animated comedy series Star Trek: Lower Decks. The fifth and final season will premiere on Paramount+ with two episodes on Thursday, October 24, in the U.S. and internationally.
Following the premiere, new episodes of the 10-episode-long season will drop every Thursday on the service leading up to the series finale on Thursday, December 19.
In season five of Star Trek: Lower Decks, the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos is tasked with closing “space potholes” – subspace rifts that are causing chaos in the Alpha Quadrant. Pothole duty would be easy for Junior Officers Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, and Rutherford … If they didn’t also have to deal with an Orion war, furious Klingons, diplomatic catastrophes, murder mysteries, and scariest of all: their own career aspirations.

No matter who you ask, most fans will tell you that they are largely unsatisfied with the direction of the Star Trek franchise. Whether they're unhappy with the direction of some shows, or the lack of sincerity in others, or even the dark tone that some writers are desperate to "explore", many fans will tell you that the franchise as a whole isn't where it should be.
That's not wholly unfair either, as it's a lack of overall interest in the Star Trek brand that saw a long-awaited show in Star Trek: Section 31, get shrunk down to a single, 90-minute film that went straight to streaming. This isn't a direct shot at the entire franchise, as shows like Star Trek: Strange New Worlds can still pull in the viewers, but they're just about the only ones.
No other show has been able to pull in viewers, routinely, across 10 weeks.

Star Trek fans are reading for potential the last major news date of the year; the New York Comic Con. Usually a quiet affair, the event is usually Star Trek's last stop on the road to the end of the year. The franchisee usually gets most of its news out at the San Diego Comic-Con or one of the more major Star Trek-focused conventions, but in recent years the Nycc has started to develop a reputation as a news-heavy affair.
Last year, of course, was the Kid Cudi X Star Trek crossover. While that may not be a huge hit among fans, it was a seriously significant event, This year may not be very different in that regard. There could be some major pieces of news to come out of the event, especially with the Lower Decks finale coming days later.
So here are five things we hope to see at the event.

Star Trek: Section 31 will again do what so many other Star Trek shows have done before it; tell an origin story. By our counts, this is the seventh series or film to do so. In the shows, we had Star Trek: Enterprise, Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and Star Trek: The Original Series. While in the films, not counting Section 31, we had Sar Trek 2009, and Star Trek: First Contact.
Each of those films and shows did a lot to explain, expand, and attempt to tell prequels to stories that would later come to be. In doing so, the franchise continues to exploit, condense, and further muddle the franchise's past. Section 31 will once again seek to harvest intrigue over the golden era of the franchises by telling the story of Section 31. A story no one was looking to see be told.

As of this writing, Trekkies haven't been given too many details about the upcoming TV movie "Star Trek: Section 31." A recent teaser trailer revealed a lot, however. As was known, Section 31 is the shady, black ops division of Starfleet, tasked with infiltrating dangerous crime lairs or manipulating local politics to their own ends. They're the morally compromised arm of "Star Trek." In the upcoming film, the division is led by Empress Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh), who was previously a recurring character on "Star Trek: Discovery." Georgiou, to recap, was rescued from the evil "mirror" universe where she was a vicious tyrant who murdered millions. Now, after a slight redemption arc, she's been put in charge of a cadre of spies.
Said characters are a ragtag group of freelance badasses. The "Section 31" cast includes Omari Hardwick, Kacey Rohl, Sven Ruygrok, Robert Kazinsky, Humberly Gonzalez, and James Hiroyuki Liao.Sam Richardson...

Colin Callender’s Playground will adapt Georges Simenon’s best-selling detective novels “Maigret” into a television series set to air in the U.S. on PBS under the “Masterpiece” banner.
The adaptation of the streetwise Parisian Chief Inspector Jules Maigret has started production in Budapest. Callender and David Stern will executive produce for Playground.
Benjamin Wainwright will play Maigret and Stefanie Martini stars as Madame Louise Maigret.
“George Simenon’s creation of Jules Maigret holds a firm place in the pantheon of great literary detectives and we are incredibly grateful to our partners ‘Masterpiece,’ Banijay, Ilp and John Simenon for their trust and support as we endeavor to bring a contemporary Maigret to a new, worldwide audience,” Stern said. “Patrick Harbinson’s brilliantly fresh take on this iconic IP is reflective of Playground’s ambition to expand our growing slate of contemporary returning dramas that speak to a global marketplace.

Rewriting history is hard. It's especially hard when rewriting history that no one wanted to be rewritten. That's an issue we have in everyday life with how some people like to retell the events of a situation but incorrectly. Sometimes to make one side look nobler than another. It's also an issue in science fiction, where people will try to retell history just to make their stories fit better.
When it's done in sci-fi or fiction in general, it's usually to try and copy the success of things that came before it and to further explore the era in which the story is set. The problem with that is that often the writers will steal elements of the era they want to set their stories in while throwing out everything else that they don't like.

It has been 8 years since Star Trek Beyond hit theatres, whose financial failure stalled the production of the next movie in the franchise. While the third installment in the rebooted version of the franchise garnered a decent critical reception upon its release, despite making $334M at the box office, it was a financial letdown following its $185M budget.

Since the launch of CBS All Access -- which is now called Paramount+ -- in 2017, Paramount has debuted a massive spate of new "Star Trek" shows. This began with "Star Trek: Discovery," followed quickly by "Star Trek: Short Treks," the "Next Generation" throwback "Star Trek: Picard," the two animated shows "Star Trek: Lower Decks" and "Star Trek: Prodigy," and the Enterprise-set "Discovery" spinoff "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds." There was also a collection of animated shorts called "Very Short Treks."
As of this writing, only "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" and "Star Trek: Lower Decks" have new episodes forthcoming. This is in addition to a TV movie called "Star Trek: Section 31," set for release in 2025, and a series called "Starfleet Academy," which is currently in development.

To date, there have been six feature films based on "Star Trek," four based on Star Trek: The Next Generation," and three set in a rebooted timeline (called the Kelvin timeline by fans). Those 13 films were all released theatrically from 1979 to 2016, averaging one film every three years or so. Up next, "Star Trek: Section 31" is slated for release on Paramount+ sometime in 2025, and it will be the first "Star Trek" TV movie. There has also long been talk of making a fourth film in the Kelvin timeline, but that movie's fate is currently a question mark; I'll believe it when I see it.
The longstanding general consensus is that the odd-numbered "Star Trek" films are bad and unsuccessful, while the even-numbered films are amazing hits. "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," for instance, was something of a disappointment at the box office, but "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan...

San Diego Comic-Con is always a pretty big show, and this year proved to be no exception. Indeed, Sdcc, after a quiet 2023 (where it was impacted by the strikes) seemed to be back in full force this year, with Hall H once again housing panels that were next to impossible to get into if you didn’t plan well ahead. As usual, JoBlo was there to cover the festivities, and I gotta say, it was a whirlwind.
While I’ve worked for JoBlo since 2007, I never actually attended Sdcc for the company in the olden days. It’s only since becoming Editor-in-Chief that I’ve started going, and I’ve been having a blast in San Diego, that’s for sure. This year I covered the convention with Mike Conway, who you might know from his work on JoBlo Horror Originals (he’s the host of Horror Party Movies and...

The cast of the upcoming “Star Trek: Section 31,” a direct-to-streaming Paramount+ film starring Michelle Yeoh, Sam Richardson (“The Afterparty”), Omari Hardwick (“Power”) and Kacey Rohl (“The Magicians”), stopped by Variety Studio, presented by Google TV, at the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con.
Richardson, Hardwick and Rohl were joined by director Olatunde Osunsanmi and executive producer Alex Kurtzman to talk about the franchise’s upcoming interstellar venture.
A spin-off from the series “Star Trek: Discovery,” the film follows Philippa Georgiou (Yeoh) as she works with Section 31, a secret division of Starfleet tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets.
“The movie is a lot of things. It’s action, drama, comedy, it’s equal parts all of that,” said Richardson, who plays a Quasi, a shapeshifting chameloid. “So, it’s not just up to Quasi to be funny, everybody’s funny in it, and everybody’s serious and the stakes are there for everybody.

Star Trek: Section 31 Trailer: Michelle Yeoh Joins A Secret Starfleet Division In Discovery Spin-Off
Set phasers to Fun! After bagging a long overdue Oscar for her turn(s) as Evelyn in Everything Everywhere All At Once, Michelle Yeoh is swapping the multiverse to play her Star Trek: Discovery mirror universe character Emperor Philippa Georgiou once again in Olatunde Osunsanmi's Paramount+ original movie Star Trek: Section 31. Front-loaded with a playful warning for "misfit content", the first trailer for the movie — which is set to follow Yeoh's villainous warlord as she joins a black ops division of Starfleet — promises to bring a distinctly different vibe to the almost seventy-year-old sci-fi franchise. Check it out:
We told you the vibe was different! "Somebody's gotta keep it lively, right?" During San Diego Comic-Con, Paramount+ revealed the first look teaser trailer for an intriguing new Star Trek spin-off movie called Star Trek: Section 31. It's not a series, it's a one-time movie "event" - connected to the recent "Star Trek: Discovery" series. It is intended to be the first real TV movie in the St franchise and part of producer Alex Kurtzman's expanded Star Trek Universe. Section 31 stars Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh as Emperor Philippa Georgiou, who becomes an agent for a secret division of Starfleet. Tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets, she also must face the sins of her past. The cast includes Omari Hardwick, Kacey Rohl, Sam Richardson, Sven Ruygrok, Robert Kazinsky, Humberly Gonzalez, and James Hiroyuki Liao. This looks a bit funky - definitely a departure from what most expect, but it seems like they're having fun with dark humor,...

Approximately 500 hundred years ago, we learned that Michelle Yeoh was in talks to star in a spin-off series focused on her character from "Star Trek: Discovery." In January 2019 (approximately 499 years ago), "Star Trek: Section 31" was officially announced as an in-development project for CBS All Access. Since then, CBS All Access has died of old age and been resurrected as Paramount+, and the "Section 31" TV series has become a Paramount+ original movie instead. Now, the first teaser trailer for "Star Trek: Section 31" is finally here.
The original Captain Philippa Georgiou was killed off in the second episode of "Discovery," but Yeoh returned as a Mirror Universe version of the character: the sharply-dressed, gleefully wicked Emperor Philippa Georgiou. This evil Georgiou tagged along when the Discovery crew returned to their original universe, where her lack of morals made her a perfect fit for Starfleet Intelligence's black ops unit, Section 31. The “Star Trek: Section 31” teaser is here, and it’s a vibe like we’ve never gotten from “Star Trek” before. No Federation root-beer-only drinkers need apply for this club.
Directed by “Star Trek: Discovery” Mvp helmer Olatunde Osunsanmi — who directed that show’s premieres and finales and gave an extra cinematic dimension to the series — “Section 31” puts the spotlight on the secretive covert ops and intelligence unit within Starfleet. Michelle Yeoh, who plays the erstwhile Empress Georgiou of the Mirror Universe, is recruited by the organization to bring a different sensibility to it — one far removed from those who care about the Prime Directive or any other kind of pious Starfleet feel-goodery.
Which is to say that this is the first “Star Trek” property ever where a character says, “You’re a bad bitch.”

She’s a tyrant who “murdered her own people by the millions.” And when someone calls her a “bad bitch,” she just smiles and enjoys the attention.

The original movie features Yeoh reprising her role as Philippa Georgiou, a character she first played in Star Trek: Discovery‘s first season. Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh is absolutely dangerous in the trailer for Olatunde Osunsanmi’s “Star Trek: Section 31.” In a clip shared at Comic-Con on Saturday, Yeoh’s Emperor Philippa Georgiou flaunts her talent for evil — and struggles with becoming something else — as Beyoncé’s “Formation” plays in the background.
“Emperor philippa Georgiou,” Omari Hardwick intones, “you’re a tyrant who murdered her own people by the millions… the past always catches up with you.”
Elsewhere in the trailer, Kacey Rohl explains to Yeoh, “31 is Black Ops division. Spy work. Starfleet is here to make sure no one commits murder” and Sam Richardson admits, “We can’t trust you with our lives, but here we go.”
“Someone’s got to keep it lively… right?” Yeoh asks, feigning innocence.
The clip also gave fans the first look at Miku Martineau as the younger version of Philippa Georgiou.

The long-awaited first trailer for Star Trek: Section 31 is finally here, and it definitely brings a fresh vibe to the franchise.
Paramount+ revealed a two-minute look (below) at the Star Trek: Discovery spinoff movie, which stars Everything Everywhere All at Once Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh, reprising her role as Emperor Philippa Georgiou.
The show is about Georgiou joining a secret “black ops” division of Starfleet. From the official description, when “tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets, she also must face the sins of her past.”
The trailer strives for a more rebellious tone for the nearly 60-year-old Trek franchise, complete with contemporary music (the trailer is set to Beyoncé’s “Formation”), an onscreen “warning” from Starfleet about its “misfit content,” and title card graphics which break with Trek tradition. At one point an officer tells Georgiou that she’s there to keep her from murdering people, and the Emperor replies,...

Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh has joined the cast of Amazon Prime Video’s Blade Runner 2099 sequel series, currently filming in Prague.
Already a veteran of action and science fiction genres, Oscar-winning actor Michelle Yeoh has joined the cast of Amazon Prime Video’s limited TV series, Blade Runner 2099.
Currently, that’s about all we know. Even Deadline, which first published the news, doesn’t know anything useful about the character Yeoh will play or what the series will be about. Sorry about that.
The series has been in development for quite a while, though, given that it’s a sequel to 2017’s Blade Runner 2049 (itself a sequel to Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner), and there’s still nothing to watch roughly seven years on.
