Western Australian film, The Xrossing, hits close to home
infoisolatednation17 November 2020
Directed by Steven J. Mihaljevich, The Xrossing is a compelling, moving and uniquely Western Australian film.

Opening with hazy, suburban scenery and the sweeping bushland of Swan View, the scene reveals the brooding murder of a young girl, Tracey Myers. Surrounded in mystery, her death begins to unravel loose ends. Without revealing too much, the ensuing chaos and multiple story arcs climaxing together will have you on the edge of your seat.

For those who have the pleasure of experiencing this film in all its glory, it's none other than a beautiful reminder of how human connection remains a central driving force, no matter the story.

The Xrossing Puts Multi-Dimensional Characters at Its Heart directed by Steven J Mihaljevich
lezlyherbert4 December 2020
This riveting locally shot film revolves around the repercussions of the murder of a young girl in the Swan Valley. Three teenage boys decide that a quiet Noongar man Black Bobby (Kelton Pell), who keeps to himself, is the perpetrator. Riding their bikes through the bush and armed with spray cans, they set off a chain of events that cumulate in a shocking ending.

This film is not a murder mystery that tries to find a murderer, though there are hints dropped if you watch the flashbacks carefully. It is a drama about prejudice, violence, ignorance, revenge and redemption. At its heart are several multi-dimensional characters whose decisions charge the directions of their lives forever.

Unlike his mates Shane (Jacob O'Neill) and Angus (Jamie Smith), Chris (Luke Morgan) manages to break the cycle of prejudice and violence and veer from the path of toxic masculinity. He is strong enough to resist his peers and intelligent enough make amends for injustice with the support of girlfriend Abbey (Georgia Eyers).

It is distressing to watch less enlightened characters get caught up in the whirlpool of hate and eventually self-destruction. Mihaljevich is absolutely mesmerising as Shane's half brother and local drug lord Phoenix as he careers towards an inevitable crisis.

Former high school drama teacher Mihaljevich, who lives in Swan View, has already received awards for his low budget drama (below $250,000) - winning best film in the micro-budget category at the Toronto Independent Film Festival. This is not a brilliant Western Australian film - it is a brilliant film for the world stage.

The Xrossing is must see!

The Xrossing in Review

I had the privilege of seeing The Xrossing twice and on both occasions I was deeply moved by both the thought provoking story and the outstanding performances of the cast. This is a significant film for our times and I believe will be well received internationally.

The opening scenes introduce the audience to a landscape familiar to Perth residents, revealing the unique beauty of the eastern metropolitan bushland and historical landmarks . Nestled within the story begins. A murder of a young girl has the community talking and reactive opinions are quickly being formed. Meeting the three young characters, you are quickly drawn into their situation as they process what has happened to their friend and how they deal with this new reality.

But there is so much more to this film. This story will take you back to when our youthful personas emerged to meet life's journey and remember how with only a pocket full of experience, we navigated our Xrossings with the people and circumstances that awaited us.

This is a must see film so make sure you experience The Xrossing for yourself.

Brilliant!

I'm still processing this outstanding film... I literally walked out of the theatre speechless... in a good way! Beautifully shot showcasing our stunning corner of the world, The Xrossing certainly lived up to all the hype. The acting, production and script were absolutely flawless, not at all reflective of its limited production budget. Though very confronting at times, the beauty of the cinematography coupled with the acting and the script, resulted in a very thought provoking film with an important message.

An incredible achievement for all of those involved in producing this superb film. Highly recommend!

Wow... just wow

Warning: Spoilers
I grew up in Swan View and attended the local high school. Watching this I felt like I had been transported back to that time. It truly captured what life was like growing up there. The drug culture that sucked in so many to those that yearned to leave 6056 in their rear view mirror. It brought to light the sadness of the institutionalised racism among the locals despite a high indigenous population. It was such a powerful message sent by Bobby by returning the wallet to Chris and in turn his desire to right his wrongs.

Exploratory Crime Drama Confronts Timeless Issues with a Modern Outlook
tblagojevic8 January 2021
Shot in Western Australia, this gritty film punches way above budget, exploring some of the dark sides of human nature.

With an indigenous Australian man assumed as the murderer of a young girl, a group of would be local vigilantes seek "revenge."

A clash of contrasting personalities and tensive events build and climax, eliciting the audience into weighing up issues that confront us more and more in the modern world - where views on prejudice, violence, revenge, deceit and justice are ever-changing at our forefront.

The film leaves the audience thinking and reflecting after the final credit roll.

  • A hidden gem that many will discover

A remarkable achievement
benjeffery-362938 January 2021
The buzz around this film - and the awards it was winning internationally- meant I had pretty high expectations for it, and they were more than exceeded!

The story of the struggle to break the cycle of crime, ignorance and bigotry is handled with aplomb and becomes increasingly engrossing as it unfolds. It is never predictable or trite and brings several genuinely moving moments.

The performances of the main characters are all incredible - nuanced and subtle and completely believable at all times.

The movie also shows different aspects of the city of Perth - it's natural beauty on full display alongside it's seedier human side.

This film deserves all the accolades and compliments it has been receiving and I highly recommend checking it out.

A must see Grubby Beauty
mrmikeb-6235512 January 2021
I watched this film at the Revelation Film Festival in Perth, December 2021. The audience mood shifted from enjoying the aesthetics of an unforgiving but attractive Western Australian setting and considered music selections, to becoming engrossed in unapologetic yet purposeful observations about attitudes that underpin modern Australia.

While too many Australian films obsess over elongated and superfluous shots of landscape; the fine writing and directing in The Xrossing interweave relevant and beautifully shot sequences to enhance and complement the intricate, relevant and original narrative

Kelton Pell's ability to capture the nuances of an honourable and misunderstood character and wordless displays of strength and dignity are simply a wonder to watch on the big screen. Learning about Pell's contribution to the script at the pre-show panel discussion made sense because Bobby radiates a precious and patient sincerity that all would do well to emulate.

Steve Mihaljevich's multi-layered performance as gang leader 'Phoenix' as he negotiates power, loyalty and escape is thrilling to watch because his burgeoning goodness clashes with his violent and resolute nature. Evoking empathy for such a violent and unpredictable criminal is testament to Mihaljevich's skillset as an actor and director.

Luke Morgan as 'Chris' and Georgia Eyers as 'Abbey' have a playful connection that provides some welcomed comedic relief from harrowing scenes and also gives subtle hints about what or who could be helpful in developing empathy and connection in a context of judgement and mistruth.

Overall, watch this grubby beauty for the aesthetics, subtle and original shifts character intricacies, powerful performances and one striking, unencumbered and thrilling story that will throw your feelings and beliefs around until the ending and beyond.

Absolutely brilliant film. It was filmed in my local neighbourhood which to be honest was the reason I originally went to see it. However, I was blown away by how good the actual movie is and the brilliant story it's telling.

This is seriously a must see movie it's absolutely fantastic brilliantly written and directed and the acting is also really good. I honestly can't recommend this movie highly enough. I have seen it twice now and I'm not ashamed to say I would 100% watch it for a third time.

Beautiful. Haunting. Confronting. Sad
themorrigan-420164 February 2022
Such a must see movie. The cinematography, the music, the acting. To see something filmed in the area I live and see my favourite places viewed in a different way was incredible. The story is so sad, but uplifting, confronting yet full of growth. Characters so familiar to us in their actions. This is a story that needs to be told and learned from. Well done!!

A precious Australian Film
remyabaker1 February 2022
The Xrossing is a film that I think every Australian should watch because it holds up a mirror to Australian society and we need to be ready for what it shows. This might be the most important film I have seen all year because it shines the light on a story that many in Australia feel more than content to sweep under the rug because to do otherwise would mean confronting our way of life, and our commitment to all Australians. This is a beautiful film about human connections. Absolutely brilliant!

That said, Steven Mihaljevich is a very impressive film maker who has brilliantly managed to show case a visually ravishing and commendably nuanced story with a timely anti-racist message, all told through an Australian lens. Well done. The film's soundtrack, a mixture of organic and traditional Indigenous music, also contributes to that sense of place. Thank you for making such a meaningful film.

"Beautifully imagined tale"
ballzdj13 January 2021
The Xrossing is an enthralling and beautifully imagined tale that must be seen! Starring Kelton Pell as the reclusive Bobby, and Luke Morgan as the conflicted Chris. Brilliantly navigating the poignant themes of racism and acceptance. Meanwhile , friendships and morals are tested. The serene atmospheric music , and epic cinematography , encompass a gripping narrative written by the talented Carl Maiorana and first time feature director Steven John Mihaljevich. 5/5stars

Don't take your Mum!
dherbert84 March 2021
At first, I was captivated by the establishing drone shots of a system of highways I know very well, having many times visited friends in that part of the Perth hills. Not a typical film opening by any means.

Then we started to see the lush, gentle greenery of the area, and the invasive arum lilies that have choked so many of our WA creeks and waterways. Beautiful but deadly, kind of like the film itself, and not in a good way. Literally deadly.

Shocking. Deeply frightening. At times, too much to bear. I had to cover my face in dread of what was coming next. This movie was not what I expected it to be.

It's beautifully filmed, brilliantly acted, haunting music, and characters we've either been, or known, or loved, and a clever, witty, interesting script. Couldn't fault any of it. But the story underneath the story is something out of the box.

A very strange love story that will break your heart in ways you won't expect. But a word of warning: don't take your Mum.

Exceeded expectations
siwalker-8941511 September 2021
Have seen the film a couple of times and still continue to be amazed at what could be done, with what would be considered a very small budget.

The emotional connection to characters reels you in to caring what happens to each one, no matter how minor the role.

The story comes across as authentic and relatable. The music provides a great underpinning to the emotion of the scenes.

The acting goes beyond what was expecting.

Hidden Gem
hangar-245167 September 2021
I heard that the budget for this movie was around $90,000. How did they make such an amazing dramatic movie on that amount?? The film looks like it has a budget of at least 2 million. Truly remarkable.

The story is heartfelt. The themes are relevent and important. The characters are people we have all seen - relatable and all extremely sympathetic.

I have to say also that the music was deeply moving. The score was both dreamy and earthy; capturing the soul of the story perfectly.

The acting was also very good, especially for many younger cast who were probably not as experienced as the others. The authenticity was felt in every scene.

Both Kelton Pell and Steven J. Mihaljevich were excellent - first class performances.

My only criticism was that I would have liked to have seen a little more of the Abbey character, played by Georgia Eyers.

An incredible achievement and a must see film. I hope that more people discover this hidden gem.

A great addition to the Australian film industry!
antonijevicandrew6 September 2022
A classic crime/gang story plot with an important message that can transcend generations. The Xrossing shows us that we have the choice to break away from our 'expected' path in life, and that we are ultimately in control of our own destiny. Assumptions may lead to a chain of events that can affect many lives along the way, so always be true to who you are and don't just go along with the current; break free.

The Xrossing challenges a lot of stereotypes along the journey of the film, showing us how dangerous and detrimental these pre-deceived notions may be. We are all the Xross roads of our life, and we can choose which way we'll cross paths with our time on this earth.
