"Don't be afraid. I'm not here to take you... You can help me. And I can help you." It's time to discover new worlds. Time to explore unique galaxies and strange planets. A Thousand Suns is the latest creation from a filmmaker known as "Macgregor", produced by a company called Blackmilk Studio. The sci-fi anthology series set in the distant future has launched online - all six episodes (to start) are available on YouTube for free. Macgregor says his team of filmmakers, including Ruairi Robinson & Tyson Wade Johnston, worked to craft "films that serve as a gateway to our hopes, dreams... and nightmares." We posted a trailer last week, and now the first round of films are out. This is similar to Neill Blomkamp's Oats Studios or the Love Death + Robots series on Netflix, featuring fresh ideas brought vividly to life in films that are under 10 minutes. So...

"In the vastness of space and time, many tales weave into one, under the light of a thousand suns." There's an exciting original sci-fi series about to launch next week. A Thousand Suns is the latest creation from a filmmaker known as "Macgregor", produced by a company called Blackmilk Studio. There's not much out yet about the plot or the different stories. There will be a total of six anthology episodes to watch: Episode 1 - Ice; Episode 2 - Red; Episode 3 - Exodus; Episode 4 - Deal; Episode 5 - Bug; & Episode 6 - Tomorrow Land. Macgregor says his team of filmmakers, including Ruairi Robinson & Tyson Wade Johnston, worked to craft "films that serve as a gateway to our hopes, dreams... and nightmares." This seems like a sleek live-action anthology series akin to Love Death + Robots that will tell various sci-fi stories. I'm really digging the footage in this teaser, and will be...

George R.R. Martin ended 2023 with a big announcement. Not about his books — the new ones, anyway — but the author of “A Song of Ice and Fire” offered an update on the various projects in progress that will adapt his works, including animated series.
Martin posted to his blog on December 31, echoing popular sentiments about Peak TV and heaping praise on Netflix’s “Blue Eye Samurai,” a show that recently won him over. He noted that he has discussed multiple animated projects from the “A Song of Ice and Fire” and “Game of Thrones” universe in previous and ongoing conversations with HBO, including two which were shelved (he strongly preferes “shelved” to “killed”).
He then announced that “Nine Voyages,” a “House of the Dragon” tie-in about the adventures of Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint), had moved from live-action to animation, a move Martin says he wholeheartedly supports.

In anticipation of his new film, The Killer, coming to Netflix on November 10, I tip-toed through the tulips of my favorite director’s filmography and came away thinking that if David Fincher ever decided to fully wade into the waters of the horror genre?
We’d all be in deep shit. In the best of ways.
Here are the most messed up and depraved moments of David Fincher’s career… so far.
Hugging Ed Kemper – “Mindhunter” Season 1, Episode 10 (2017)
David Fincher has an amazing way of taking a simple moment and making it more intense than drinking Mountain Dew while snowboarding over a volcano. He made a movie about Facebook and it’s one of my all-time favorites for Christ’s sake.
In this scene, we have a simple conversation between two men in a hospital room that still somehow leaves you looking for Ray Finkle and a new pair of shorts.

David Fincher’s new film The Killer debuted to mixed reactions when the film premiered at the Venice Film Festival this year. Then, in the review from our own Chris Bumbray, he says it may not be one of Fincher’s best, it’s still calculated and expertly assembled as only Fincher can do. Netflix has now unveiled the newest trailer for the streamer’s original film starring Michael Fassbender. In this trailer, we get slightly more details on the plot, but we are totally immersed Fassbender’s assassin thought process with his inner monologue guiding us through the preview.
The official logline from Netflix reads,
“After a fateful near-miss, an assassin battles his employers, and himself, on an international manhunt he insists isn’t personal.”
The film sports a cast with acting talents such as Michael Fassbender, Charles Parnell, Arliss Howard, Sophie Charlotte and Tilda Swinton. The screenplay is written by Andrew Kevin Walker.

The film’s synopsis reads: “In 2200, private detective Aline Ruby and her android partner Carlos Rivera are hired by a wealthy businessman to track down a notorious hacker. On Mars, they descend deep into the underbelly of the planet’s capital city where they uncover a darker story of brain farms, corruption, and a missing girl who holds a secret about the robots that threatens to change the face of the universe.”
Perin’s debut was part of the official selection at the Cannes and Annecy film festivals this year.

What kind of animation has Europe’s next gen talent got in the hopper? Cartoon Springboard, an E.U. platform organized by Cartoon for burgeoning toon talents which kicks off today in Madrid, can supply some answers.
Of the 24 projects to be pitched Wednesday and Thursday at Madrid’s Atheneum, a large part will be made, if financed, in 2D. At least half are from women.
Quite a few potential standouts come from France: ”Bitches,” which won an Annecy Ciclic Prize at its MIFA Pitches; “Maestitia,” co-helmed by Merel Hamers, at Gobelins, and “Inspector, Your Pants!” from the same prestige school; “When Monsters Within,” whose key creative Pablo Alcázar studies at Valence’s La Poudrière, another venerable French animation school.

It would be hard to argue that “Deadpool” didn’t change the landscape of superhero/comic book adaptations. The successful R-rated “X-Men” adjacent film cemented Ryan Reynolds as a full-fledged action star and launched director Tim Miller as someone on the pulse of genre filmmaking. Miller would eventually exit “Deadpool 2” over creative differences to instead focus on working with James Cameron on “Terminator: Dark Fate” and David Fincher on their acclaimed mature animated anthology series “Love, Death & Robots.”

A master of his craft renowned for his clinical, methodical technique suddenly finds himself in a precarious position. But before we get to David Fincher, let's talk about his new film, "The Killer."
Based on the French graphic novel series of the same name by writer Alexis Nolent and illustrator Luc Jacamon, "The Killer" is the first feature film Fincher has directed since 2020's Oscar-winning "Mank" and only his third in the last 10 years. That's partly due to him being busy helming multiple episodes of Netflix's acclaimed serial killer drama "Mindhunter," as well as producing and occasionally directing the streamer's (also well-received) animated anthology series "Love, Death & Robots." Still, it's just not the same as consistently having a new Fincher film every few years as we did in the 1990s and 2000s.
Maybe that's why the crowd was particularly enthusiastic during his new film's world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival.

“Sorry to Bother You” writer-director Boots Riley is among those taking issue with director David Fincher’s comments on the ongoing strikes by Hollywood writers and actors, delivered in a Venice Film Festival press conference for Fincher’s new Netflix thriller, “The Killer.”
On the platform formerly known as Twitter, Riley quoted a line from Fincher’s press conference, speaking about “The Killer”: “My hope is someone will see this film and get very nervous about the person in line behind them at Home Depot.”
Riley wrote that this is a “distorted worldview,” but that it’s “propagated in many of [Fincher’s] films & his confused take on the strike.”
Fincher’s filmography includes “Seven,” “The Social Network,” “Fight Club” and more commercial and critical successes, along with TV shows “Mindhunter” and “House of Cards.” A sense of paranoia and awareness of the threat of crime hangs over much of his work.

Netflix has just released the manic trailer for David Fincher’s new dark tale from the crime underworld that has Michael Fassbender losing himself in a psychosis. The Killer is the new effort from Fincher and his Seven screenwriter, Andrew Kevin Walker. Yesterday, the one-sheet poster for the film was released and depicted a stylized, painted look of Michael Fassbender’s character that’s indicative of a retro 70’s movie poster or novel. Today, the official trailer has been released by the streaming service.
The official logline from Netflix reads,
“After a fateful near-miss, an assassin battles his employers, and himself, on an international manhunt he insists isn’t personal.” The trailer brings the same chaotic energy that the teaser trailer for Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo from 2011 hit unsuspecting audiences with. Fassbender’s character neurotically reminds himself to stick to the plan along with his other...

Life is simply better with a David Fincher project on the horizon. It's been three long years since the acclaimed filmmaker delivered "Mank" and, incredibly enough, almost another decade since "Gone Girl" graced the big screen. Long story short, gone are the days when we had the chance to enjoy "Zodiac," "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," "The Social Network," and "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" ... all within the span of four years.
But that kind of workload is bound to take a toll, which certainly helps explain Fincher's more measured approach in recent years. Ever since the news first hit that he'd be teaming up with actor Michael Fassbender and reuniting with "Seven" screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker, however, fans have been anxious for our first extended look at "The Killer." Reportedly in the works since before 2007, the film is actually an adaptation of the French graphic novel "Le Tueur,...

Michael Fassbender is back. And his first film since 2019’s “X-Men: Dark Phoenix” is “The Killer,” a globetrotting David Fincher thriller that looks like the very definition of a must-see film. You can watch the trailer above.
Based on the French graphic novel of the same name by writer Alexis Nolent (a.k.a. Matz) and illustrator Luc Jacamon, with a screenplay by frequent Fincher collaborator Andrew Kevin Walker (“Seven”), the movie follows an assassin (Fassbender) who, after a near-fatal miss, “battles his employers, and himself, on an international manhunt he insists isn’t personal.” Tilda Swinton, Charles Parnell, Arliss Howard and Sophie Charlotte star alongside Fassbender.
Not only is “The Killer” Fassbender’s first film since the last “X-Men” film in that run, but it’s also Fincher’s first feature-length project since 2020’s “Mank,” which was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, and won...

David Fincher was in a characteristically misanthropic mood during a discursive Q&a with Steven Soderbergh Thursday night at Tribeca Festival. The directors have been pals since Soderbergh’s indie career launched more than three decades ago while Fincher became a Hollywood enfant terrible with “Alien 3.”
“I hate reality, but it just keeps seeping in,” Fincher told his friend, who moderated the conversation at Manhattan’s Spring Studios, while noting that he is a “regret-generating entity” who loves rehearsal but, he said, “I don’t enjoy shooting.” Later, when asked by an audience member for advice on how to get an independent film out in the world, Fincher deferred to Soderbergh and said, “I’m a slave. I’m essentially going to beg for an inordinately huge amount of money,” noting that the “Sex, Lies, and Videotape” wunderkind might be better suited to answering the question.

Oscar winner Andrew Ruhemann has returned to the director’s chair for “The Day I Became a Bird.”

“I was at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair and that’s where I found this book. I thought it was a very intriguing image: Why is there this kid in a bird costume? It moved me,” he says.

The whole impetus for the series started from that photo of Elvis going to Richard Nixon and offering his services as an undercover agent,” claims Eddie. “I had always pitched it as Elvis Presley as a secret agent fighting crime, as if directed by Quentin Tarantino.”

In a highly anticipated animation event at this year’s Cannes Festival, Emmy-winning Spanish director Rodrigo Blaas attends on Sunday the screening of his short film “Sith,” part of Disney+’s “Star Wars: Visions” Season 2 anthology. The first big-screen exhibition of “Sith” — released worldwide May 4 on Disney+ — followed by a meet and greet with Blaas marks one highlight of the Animation Day Revelations New Animated Shorts From Spain, organized by Icex Spain’s Trade & Investment.

Spain’s Revelations showcase has focused on shorts, not features, unveiling the huge breadth of animation talent and techniques in Spain.
Some shorts directors are already stars, such as Alberto Mielgo with the Oscar-winner “The Windshield Wiper.” Diego Porral, director of “Leopoldo From the Bar,” served as animation lead on “Love, Death + Robots” episode “Kill Team Kill.”
Standouts among new projects in Revelations included “Latente,” a Next Lab Generation winner from Carlos Zaragoza and Aurora Jiménez, and Martín Romero’s “To Bird or Not to Bird,” from Uniko and Abano Producións, which is a 2D short made largely in black and white featuring an angst-ridden clock cuckoo and other birds beset by environmental destruction.
Revelations climaxes with a special screening, the first in a cinema, of “Sith,” Rodrigo Blaas’ episode in Disney+’s “Star Wars: Visions.”
As for features, here are 10 toon titles to track. Further international co-productions – Mr.

When the London Evening News took out a full-page ad on May 4, 1979 congratulating Margaret Thatcher on becoming Prime Minister, the UK newspaper couldn't have imagined that the pun they used, "May the Fourth Be With You," would become such an effective marketing tool for Lucasfilm over four decades later. "The Empire Strikes Back" just happened to be in production over at Elstree Studios at that time, so Star Wars fever could have certainly been in the spring air. Thatcher was a staunch symbol of the Establishment who may have fit in quite well with the Empire in George Lucas' epic space saga. But winning the hearts and minds of everyday people is a task best suited to the Rebellion.

Ready to return to the world of “Trolls?” Because “Trolls Band Together” is nearly here (watch the brand-new trailer above). It’s a hoot.
And what’s more, TheWrap spoke with director Walt Dohrn and producer Gina Shay about the upcoming sequel and what we can expect when the band gets back together.
When asked about the title of the movie, Dohrn replied: “First of all, it’s the reunion of a band. We didn’t know this when we made the other films but Branch [the character played by Justin Timberlake] has four brothers. This was 20 years ago, when he was a kid, they all used to be in a family band together a boy band called Bro Zone. [The band] broke up 20 years ago. As bands do and as big brothers do, they go out into the world. But we find out at the top of this movie that one of the brothers has been kidnapped.

On Oscar night, “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” will almost certainly win the Academy Award for feature animation. For many of those following along at home, it will look as though the director of “Pan’s Labyrinth” and “The Shape of Water” is being rewarded for some kind of secondary passion, as if del Toro had scaled Everest and then set his sights on a smaller peak on which to plant his flag. But that’s not how it happened at all.
Way back in Mexico, del Toro started his filmmaking career doing animated shorts: Obsessed with Ray Harryhausen, the amateur future auteur built rudimentary armatures, painstakingly repositioning the puppets one frame at a time. Decades later, once established in Hollywood, del Toro accepted a side gig at DreamWorks Animation, serving as a story consultant on films such as “Megamind” and “Kung Fu Panda 2” as a pretext for teaching himself the trade.

“Top Gun: Maverick,” “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “Elvis,” “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” “Moonage Daydream” and “Good Night Oppy” have won feature-film awards at the Motion Picture Sound Editors’ Golden Reel Awards, which were handed out on Sunday evening in Los Angeles.
“Top Gun: Maverick,” “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “Elvis” are all nominated in the Oscars’ Best Sound category, a combined category that for the past three years has included both sound editing and sound mixing. When the Oscars had a separate category for sound editing, the Feature Effects/Foley category won by “Top Gun” was the most reliable predictor of Oscar success, but direct comparisons have been harder to make since the categories were merged.

On Saturday, the Producers Guild of America gathered at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles to hand out the 2023 PGA Awards.
While the ceremony honors the achievements of producers across media, meaning awards were given out to series like “The White Lotus” and “The Bear,” the documentary “Navalny,” and animated feature “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” its theatrical film award, which was won by “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” is the one all eyes were on.
The Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures is often seen as a bellwether for the Best Picture Oscar, as 23 of the last 33 winners have gone on to win the Academy Award. In the room to accept were executive producers Jonathan Wang, Daniel Kwan, and Daniel Scheinert (the latter two also wrote and directed the hit multiversal dramedy from A24). The 34th Producers Guild of America Awards took place on Saturday, February 25 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The biggest award of the night, the Darryl F. The “Borderlands” movie is undergoing a round of reshoots this month, but the additional photography won’t be directed by Eli Roth. Instead, “Deadpool” director Tim Miller is stepping in to oversee a short round of reshoots on the video game adaptation with the support and blessing of Roth, a source with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap.
Despite rumors that swirled over the weekend, Roth has not been fired from the film and this is the first and only round of reshoots that has been scheduled.
With a cast that includes Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis and Edgar Ramirez, scheduling the reshoots required a juggling of the actors’ schedules, and the source added that this fell into a window of time in which Roth is unavailable. Miller is a friend of Roth’s, and he’s tackling the additional photography as a favor.

Here’s a little secret about this article: you can read it in any order you see fit. Shuffle around the paragraphs. Read it back to front. Skip to the second half and then go back and read the introduction. It’ll make sense enough, more or less. But why exactly anyone would want to do this is another matter – these words are arranged in this order for a reason. Mixing them up would be pointless. Maybe someone should tell this to Netflix, or the creators of their latest hit series, Kaleidoscope.
The eight-part drama – released on Netflix last week, and which sat for days atop the Top 10 most-watched TV chart – tells the story of Leo Pap (Giancarlo Esposito), an expert thief who is planning the heist of a lifetime. Kaleidoscope flashes through different points in time, with some episodes taking place years before the crime was committed, others in its aftermath.

How do you be an artist in these trying times? Some of the year's best animated TV shows and movies asked this question, and it's not hard to figure out why. In 2022, animators continued fighting for respect from an industry that doesn't often love them back. Animation helped keep the entertainment industry afloat during the worst of the pandemic, and the people who bring these creations to life deserve more than seeing their projects canceled prematurely, having their work scrubbed from streaming services, and inadequate wages.
After all, while it can be crass, bloody, or just too intense for younger viewers, animation can also provide a break from a stressful world — sometimes simply by reflecting back exaggerated versions of our adult concerns. Some of the best animated productions of 2022 explored identity crises, the difficulty of letting go, the struggle to make art, and the absurdities of everyday living. Here are our favorites.

All eyes are on James Cameron this weekend as Disney rolls out his long-awaited “Avatar: The Way of Water.” But while the filmmaker is primarily focused on talking about the extensive effects work that went into his new sequel, he still found time to reflect on his other big franchise, “The Terminator.”
In a new interview with Deadline, Cameron discussed his decision to return to the series in 2019 as an executive producer on “Terminator: Dark Fate.” He said that he attributes the film’s box office failure to some blind spots he and director Tim Miller missed during the creative process.
“I think, I’m actually reasonably happy with the film,” Cameron said. “Tim and I had our battles and we’ve both spoken about that, but the crazy thing is we’re still pals. Which is weird. I liked him before the movie, didn’t like him very much during the movie,...

David Fincher will be presented with the French Film Academy’s highest award, the César d’honneur for lifetime achievement, at February’s César Awards, the French equivalent to the Oscars.
The French Academy praised the director of “Se7en,” “Fight Club,” “Gone Girl” and “The Social Network” as “one of those rare directors whose entire filmography has become iconic over the years.”
“An outstanding technician, a true visionary, his cinema is hypnotic, cerebral, a source of inspiration for countless artists,” the Academy said in the press release announcing the honor.
“He shocked us with “Se7en,” kept us on the edge with “The Game,” and struck us again with “Fight Club.” With “Zodiac,” “The Social Network,” “Gone Girl,” which is his biggest film success so far, or with “Mank”, he breaks the usual codes and garners raving international reviews,” the statement continued.

Charlie Mackesy remembers the first thing producer Cara Speller said to him when they met about turning Mackesy’s bestseller “The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and the Horse” into an animated short: “I wonder how they move?” “It was an intimate, child-like question and I found it very compelling,” Mackesy told IndieWire in a recent interview.
It wouldn’t be the first time a larger story sprung from the artist, illustrator, and cartoonist’s lovely drawings of kindness and hope. The characters who populate “The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse” began appearing in posts on Mackesy’s Instagram in 2018; one sketch, in which the horse tells the boy that the bravest thing he ever said was “Help,” became a viral sensation. That led to a deal with Ebury Press and a picture book depicting a chance encounter between the titular characters.

For all the buzz around Oscar-nominated films each season, shorts tend to receive far less attention, even though the ceremony devotes three categories to celebrate the best of the year. The Oscars have honored shorts since the 1930s, and over the decades, the short categories for Best Live Action, Best Documentary, and Best Animated have been crucial to honoring an array of memorable cinematic achievements.
In recent years, the short film categories have helped launch the careers of filmmakers who went to become celebrated auteurs, including Andrea Arnold (“Wasp”) and Martin McDonagh (“Six Shooter”). Last year, Riz Ahmed became the first Muslim actor to win the short film Oscar for “The Long Goodbye,” which he co-wrote, produced, and starred in. Short film Oscars have gone to rising stars across the industry, from documentarian Roger Ross Williams (“Dear Prudence”) to “Turning Red” director Domee Shi.
