Karen Gillian and Zoë Chao will star in Let’s Have Kids!, a comedy from MRC.
Adam Sztykiel, the screenwriter of DC movie Black Adam who previously tackled the topic of giving birth with Due Date, will make his directorial debut. Sztykiel was previously set to make his directorial debut for the Warner Brothers/DC project Wonder Twins before that film fell apart after Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav canned the project amid a pullback on streaming films.
Kids centers on lifelong best friends Emma and Phoebe, played by Gillan and Chao, who decide to try to have their first babies at the same time so they can navigate the great unknown of motherhood together. They find, however, that their friendship is deeply tested when only one of them gets pregnant.
Sztykiel wrote the script with Ellie Knaus. It begins filming this year.

You have probably seen Christopher Nolan's Inception more than once, discussed Ari Aster's Midsommar with friends, rewatched Ridley Scott's Alien, and are now on the lookout for new discoveries, wondering where to find the gems of modern cinema.
In such cases, not the most talked about, but no less exciting projects come to the rescue.
1. The Fall, 2006
Tarsem Singh, a master of striking productions that transport viewers into worlds that are unprecedented in their beauty and danger, made one of the most amazing films in 2006 that can be described as a "story within a story."
The main character ends up in a hospital where he meets a little girl who helps a man cope with pain. In exchange for morphine, he tells a made-up story about a group of adventurers led by the Black Bandit. As the narrator loses the will to live and love, his characters face more and more trials,...

A simple Google search of "the best rom-coms of all time" will take you down a nostalgic hole of '90s and early-'00s movies like "10 Things I Hate About You," "While You Were Sleeping," and "P.S. I Love You." These classics, among many others, have shaped how we view love on screen. But through these films, we've learned what love looks like through white protagonists; many Bipoc communities have failed to see themselves reflected. While we saw Latine actresses like Salma Hayek, Jennifer Lopez, and Christina Milian make their mark early on in romantic comedy movies, for years the entertainment industry has undervalued and underrepresented Latine communities on screen and behind the camera.
Camila Mendes is shifting that narrative. You likely recognize her from rom-coms like "Palm Springs," "The Perfect Date," and "The New Romantic" - and she's starring in and serving as an an executive producer for the new rom-com film "Música,...

Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster hit has become a cultural phenomenon and reignited cinema after the pandemic – it’s also daring, subversive and fun
If there’s one thing the Oscars are usually sniffy about, it’s a mainstream blockbuster. They may garner nominations but winning is a different matter altogether. But Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, an effervescent comedy about the world’s most famous doll that wraps up a zingy dissection of the patriarchy, women’s lack of power and mortality in a bright bow, is not your standard blockbuster. And that’s exactly why it deserves that best picture Oscar.
Meryl Streep wasn’t being hyperbolic when she credited Barbie for saving the film industry and “all of our jobs” at this year’s Palm Springs film awards. It became 2023’s highest grossing film and the 14th highest-grossing film of all time after cashing in $1.4bn at the worldwide box office.

Lionsgate has acquired domestic rights to the Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Lily James and Himesh Patel comedy “Greedy People.”
The film explores what happens when the eccentric residents of a small, picturesque island town are faced with a sensational murder and the discovery of $1 million next to the body. This sparks a series of increasingly bad decisions that do a number on the peace and tranquility of the community.
“’Greedy People’ is a hugely entertaining crime thriller in every way,” said Allison Lynch, Lionsgate’s director of acquisitions and co-productions. “Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Lily James, and Himesh Patel lead an incredible cast through twists and turns that range from the hilarious to the horrific – and the movie always keeps you guessing.”

Sundance film festival: Netflix forked out $17m for the low-budget, high-concept mystery but while there’s some fun to be had, there’s something missing
With this year’s festival entering its dying days, market news remains unusually slight, a surprise given how strike-impacted buyers were reportedly foaming for schedule-fillers. Big sales so far haven’t been all that big – Jesse Eisenberg comedy A Real Pain at Searchlight, Steven Soderbergh ghost story Presence at Neon – and so there are questions that still need answering going into the last weekend.
But earlier this week, as others umm-ed and ahh-ed, Netflix made a bullish statement with a $17m purchase of low-budget mind-bender It’s What’s Inside, an unusually high number for a genre film without any stars attached. While it may well be trumped over the next week or so given how other, more commercial titles remain unsold, it’s currently stamped with this year’s biggest-of-fest tag.

Oscar-nominated actor June Squibb has joined the voice cast of Pixar’s “Inside Out 2.”
The 94-year-old Squibb last worked with the Disney-owned studio for 2020’s “Soul” and 2019’s “Toy Story 4,” and has lent her voice to other animated projects including “Solar Opposites,” “Ralph Breaks the Internet” and “The Fungies.”
Squibb’s character details are unknown, but she joins an A-list voice cast in the sequel, which hits theaters June 14. Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith and Lewis Black return as Joy, Sadness and Anger, respectively, while Tony Hale and Liza Lapira take over for Bill Hader and Mindy Kaling as Fear and Disgust after reported salary disputes.
The original “Inside Out” (2015) was set inside the mind of a little girl, Riley, whose life is uprooted when her family moves from the Midwest to San Francisco. The animated blockbuster personified emotions as they conflict on how to best navigate Riley through change.

After his breakout role as Nick Miller on Fox sitcom New Girl, Johnson has appeared alongside Tom Cruise in The Mummy, Chris Pratt in the Jurassic World franchise, and voicing Peter B. Norby Walters, the onetime music agent who ran the annual “Night of 100 Stars” Oscar party for years and hosted an iconic low-stakes poker party for actors, died December 12. He was 91. His son, Walters Media Group founder and former Bold Films CEO Gary Michael Walters, confirmed the news but did not provide details.
Born Norbert Meyer, in 1952 Walters started booking jazz luminaries such as Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Stan Getz into his father’s bar.
Walters and his brother, Walter took over a place from their father and dubbed it Norby & Walter’s Bel Air, but its sign had no ampersand — which led to the name Walters would use during his career. He later took over a failing nightclub located next to the world-famous Copacabana, dubbed it Norby Walters’s Supper Club, and attracted a who’s who of boldfaced New York City names.

2020 might have been the year of the time loop movie, but Christopher Smith's 2009 horror film, "Triangle," is one of the best to ever do it. The underseen film has seen a resurgence in popularity as the time loop film as a style of storytelling has expanded beyond classics like "Turn Back The Clock," "The Twilight Zone," and most famously, "Groundhog Day." In "Triangle," a young mother named Jess (Melissa George) is struggling to adjust to raising her autistic son, Tommy (Joshua McIver), on her own. She has a planned day trip on a friend's boat, but strange little coincidences occurring throughout the day start to feel like devastating inevitabilities. As time continues to loop and realities begin to fold in on each other, making sense of the film can feel overwhelming if you're not used to the timey-wimey weirdness of a film like "Triangle."

The Predator is coming home.
“Prey,” the terrific spin-off/prequel that exists comfortably as part of the “Predator” franchise, will be released physically this fall in 4K Uhd, Blu-ray and DVD options. There will also be a 4K steelbook edition available exclusively at Best Buy. “Prey” will be available to purchase starting on Oct. 3.
The movie, set in 1719, follows a young Comanche woman named Naru (Amber Midthunder) as she goes up against a prototypical Predator (Dane Diliegro), the ultimate intergalactic hunter, who has come to earth to go up against the most fearsome warriors. “Prey” felt like a deliberate throwback to the original “Predator” film, with outstanding direction from Dan Trachtenberg (“10 Cloverfield Lane”) and an amazing lead performance in Midthunder.
When the movie came out on Hulu, it was an immediate hit with both fans and critics — it has a whopping 94% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. When announcing the...

Time loops are a cinematic commonplace now, thanks to the likes of “Groundhog Day,” “13 Monkeys,” “Palm Springs,” “Source Code,” “Edge Of Tomorrow,” “Happy Death Day,” and “Russian Doll” (with Chris Marker‘s “La Jetée” the ur-text to them all). But 20th Digital Studios has a new, intimate twist for that kind of narrative in “Jagged Mind,” set to premiere on Hulu later this month.

Chris Pang has joined Hulu’s Interior Chinatown in a pivotal recurring role.
The casting marks a reunion with Interior Chinatown lead Jimmy O. Yang. This time around, Pang plays Older Brother, the charming and talented beloved sibling of protagonist Willis Wu (Yang) whose mysterious disappearance years ago tore the family apart. Now, Willis has an opportunity to investigate his brother’s case when Det. Lana Lee (Chloe Bennet) arrives in the neighborhood with new information.

There are movies made during the pandemic, and movies made because the pandemic, and though debuting director Jake Johnson had been kicking around the idea for “Self Reliance” for years, it took Covid to motivate him to make it. Why? Because the “New Girl” actor’s absurdist concept — about a sad-sack bored enough with his life that he agrees to risk it in a “Most Dangerous Game”-style reality show — assumed both profundity and relevance as soon as the species went into lockdown. Coming up for connection, Johnson delivers a silly and frequently surprising why-we-need-people parable that leans on laughs in lieu of peril.

This article contains spoilers for "The Batman."
A mob boss whose name was whispered throughout Matt Reeves' "The Batman" will finally come into the light in HBO Max's new series "The Penguin," and he'll be played by a character actor who's a perfect fit for the part. Clancy Brown has played villain-types in everything from "Dexter: New Blood" to "Daredevil" to "The Mandalorian," and is now on board as Salvatore Maroni, per Variety.
Maroni is a mob boss who's appeared in DC comics since way back in the 1940s, with Eric Roberts playing him as a spiffy, smug gangster in "The Dark Knight" and David Zayas taking on the role in "Gotham." In last year's Robert Pattinson-led Batman film, audiences and the caped crusader get word that Sal Maroni was busted in what turns out to be a setup manufactured by John Turturro's Carmine Falcone, the creep...

Time-lopping comedy Palm Springs took a while to make it over from the US, but it was worth the wait. So , naturally there is anticipation for director Max Barbakow's next film. He's returning with an untitled body swap comedy that will star Julia Roberts and Jennifer Aniston.
Little else is known about the movie beyond the fact that Barbakow came up with the concept and wrote the script, which he'll direct. It has snagged a deal with Amazon (which has been on a buying streak of late) and will be produced by Roberts' company and Margot Robbie's LuckyChap Entertainment.
Roberts was last seen in TV drama Gaslit and cinematic rom-com Ticket To Paradise, with Leave The World Behind headed our way via Netflix this year. As for Aniston, she returns in Murder Mystery 2, which just launched a trailer.

Jennifer Aniston and Julia Roberts are having their very own "Freaky Friday" moment. The two actors are officially costarring in a movie described as a "body swap comedy" by Deadline, which broke the news about the project on Jan. 30.
The feature is set to be written and directed by Max Barbakow, the force behind 2020's "Palm Springs." Meanwhile, LuckyChap Entertainment - the company run by Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley, and Josey McNamara - will produce in addition to Barbakow, and the feature will stream on Prime Video. Further details about the plot, cast, and release date have yet to be revealed, and it remains unclear how the movie will provide a fresh twist on the classic body-switching trope. Julia Roberts and Jennifer Aniston will swap bodies in a new comedy from “Palm Springs” filmmaker Max Barbakow.
Amazon landed the film after a bidding war between several studios and streamers, according to Deadline, which first reported the news of the project. Barbakow will write and direct the movie, which is backed by Margot Robbie’s production company LuckyChap Entertainment. CAA brokered the sale to Amazon.
Aside from its marquee talent and financiers, there’s little to nothing else known about the film — including a title or logline. But the recent surprise successes of “Ticket to Paradise” with Roberts and George Clooney, as well as “The Lost City” starring Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum, have proven there’s real demand for star-driven comedies at a time when the genre has otherwise been struggling commercially. At the box office, “Ticket to Paradise” and “The Lost City” each grossed more than 150 million worldwide.

He is best known for directing Palm Springs, the Andy Samberg-Cristin Milioti 2020 comedy won by Neon and Hulu at Sundance for a then-festival record sum. The comedy is based on his original pitch.
The appetite for a two-hander star vehicle comes after the surprise box office success of Ticket to Paradise, the comedy that re-teamed Roberts with George Clooney. For Amazon’s Jennifer Salke and Head of Movies Julie Rapaport, this signals an uptick in Amazon stepping up to bolster its film slate.

So fresh, much love, so funky, much London. Get in the groove with Rye Lane and you'll never forget Dom and Yas. One of the best original romantic comedy creations in years is the delightfully quirky, exceptionally entertaining Rye Lane, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Raine Allen Miller. Rye Lane just premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and is already set for release (in theaters in the UK / on Hulu in the US) from Searchlight Pictures starting in late March this spring. It's one of the many must-see, don't-miss-it, get-your-ticket-right-now films from Sundance this year - its been a fantastic year. I've been recommending it to anyone asking. Thankfully everyone else who has seen it so far also loves it (here's one of the best reviews). The film instantly joins the ranks of beloved Sundance romcom classics like 500 Days of Summer, Before Midnight, Palm Springs, The Big Sick.

“My parents shouldn’t be together. It is obvious to me why those two people couldn’t work,” Mendes added.

As the rom-com still gasps for air in the blockbuster landscape, the Sundance Film Festival has become a reliable source for small, distinctive entries into the genre, from “Obvious Child” to “Palm Springs.” This year, the festival’s lineup yields the delightful “Rye Lane,” which
In Raine Allen-Miller’s debut feature, the two will-be lovebirds first encounter each other in a loo at an art show — he’s sobbing — and embark on a day of skirting responsibility and negotiating their own heartbreak. At just 82 minutes, Allen-Miller’s film is short, but packed to the brim with her affection for her characters and the place in world they occupy, the South London neighborhood of Peckham.

Apart from a visible glow from the thrill of being back together in person, industry professionals at the Sundance Film Festival are undergoing a sort of crisis as they debate how serious the problems are facing independent film.
The one point of agreement: With theatrical in a state of severe decline, the future of independent and art house film is very much in a state of limbo. The business model for arthouse film has been crumbling for years, but now just resembles a haze of confusion. Regal just closed 39 theaters, AMC is expected to close venues to stave off a cash crunch, Landmark shut down in Los Angeles and the box office has re-set to a new, low baseline.
That leaves the streamers as the main port of call, but let’s face it — indie filmmakers would really prefer not to end up in the bottomless pit of Netflix.
Where will all these films go?...

Chloe Domont’s “Fair Play,” a Wall Street drama that has premiered at Sundance, sold to Netlfix in a 20 million worldwide rights deal, according to an individual with knowledge of the deal.
“Fair Play” is led by “Solo” star Alden Ehrenreich and Phoebe Dynevor as Luke and Emily, co-workers at a financial firm who are deeply in love and about to be engaged. But their relationship falls apart when Emily gets a promotion at their firm, leading to a change in power dynamics that poisons their personal lives and eventually leads to violence. Eddie Marsan and Rich Sommer also star in the film.
The film sparked a bidding war that included Searchlight and Neon. It fell short of the 25 million record for a Sundance sale, set in 2021 by Apple’s “Coda,” but did surpass the 17.5 million of the previous record holders — 2020’s “Palm Springs” and 2016’s “The Birth of a Nation.

AMC is building a franchise out of the Vampire Chronicles novels written by Anne Rice, a franchise that began with the first season of their Interview with the Vampire series. Last Sunday, they started airing a series based on Rice’s Mayfair Witches novels – a series appropriately titled Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches (read our review Here). And during an AMC panel at a recent Critics Association presentation, executive producers of these shows revealed that they won’t be entirely separate. Viewers will see crossovers between Interview with the Vampire and Mayfair Witches… which makes sense, since the Vampire Chronicles stories did become entwined with the Mayfair Witches series as they went on.
Esta Spaulding and Michelle Ashford, both of whom previously worked on Masters of Sex, are writers and executive producers on Mayfair Witches, and during the AMC panel Spaulding said there is one character who appears in both series already.
