Molecule Review: Thottappan / Brilliant Production / 7 Stars
nairtejas4 April 2020
Thottappan (Godfather) is a brilliant Malayalam production with some fascinating photography, electric performances, chirpy background score (that uses country samples), and some tight editing making you gape in awe, all of which makes it a breathtaking experience even if the plot struggles with some pacing issues and unanswered questions. Shanavas Bavakutty has outsmarted himself after Kismath (2016) with the absolute finesse that he directs his actors with. The level of detailing in Vinayakan's gait as well as his mannerisms should be jointly attributed to him and Bavakutty. And to get the best out of both newcomers and proven actors like Roshan Matthew and Manoj K Jayan is a task no easy. Yet what will stay with you after you complete watching this thriller drama is the beautiful scenes of the Kerala backwaters that just seems to act as a favourite backdrop for Malayalam cinema lately. All I can say is that I approve. Thottappan is a very good experience that you need to encounter in the biggest screen and the loudest audio system. Plus one to Priyamvada Krishnan for a great debut performance. TN.

A touching tale with fantastic performances.
wynwar12 March 2020
Fantastic performances by each and every actor in the movie. It's hard to believe that this is Priyamvada's debut movie. She's an actor to look out for. Interesting and engaging storyline with a healthy dose of all emotions. Never overly mushy. Never without logic. The movie shines bright in all departments. A must watch. I'm surprised it didn't bag many national awards.

Vinayakan show
shyammukundan8 June 2019
"Thottappan" (Godfather) Malayalam movie Film adaptation of the short story by Francis Noronha. The story is of 'Ithakk' and his friend Jonnappan, petty thieves, Jonnappan's disappearance, Ithakk taking care of his friend's family . The story is happening in the backwater islands of Kochi, the villagers, their simple way of living ... all in a big canvas, to form the presentation. Even though the story starts with Ithakk on the centre stage, Sara, the God-daughter, takes the lead ... her upbringing, her surroundings, her interactions with the villagers, is the movie. Vinayakan as Ithakk lived through the character, protective nature of his God daughter, the possessiveness depicted well. Priyamvada, the debutant actress did well in Sara's role. Their relationship told in a raw and vivid manner, even her lover boy Ismail a/s esmu unable to breach the wall. Shanavas, the director took us through the presentation well, Screenplay by Rafeeque has uncanny similarity with 'Amen'. Photography reminds us of 'Kumbalangi nights'. Music is enjoyable. Even though the package is complete, presentation lacked the punch. 7 on 10 for this emotional drama. Malayalam movies are bold enough to take up unusual themes and present them well. Vinayakan leaves lasting memoirs, even after the movie.... that character is very strong.

Melody and visuals
jayaramanathan23 February 2020
The Kochi backwaters is where the story is centre with some beautiful melodious music that stays with you long after watching the film. The story, the actors, everything becomes irrelevant as the breathtaking camera takes over.

Underrated masterpiece
sarathvclsp31 March 2020
This movie is absolutely a masterpiece of art in malayalam Industry just like Ee.Ma.yau, kumbalangi nights. I can't say this is just a Realistic movie.. the music, the bgm, and the visuals make this movie as a well cafted art. The plot is i think based on a malayalam novel that i read in my childhood.. the performance of those three people Vinayakan,Female actress and Roshan mathew is mind blowing. The starkids and some dumbs who came in this industry with luck like Priya warrier has to learn from these youngsters.

A movie to dive in
harelives9 February 2020
I knew this movie is going to be good but I didn't expect it to be this good. It's about the feelings you develop inside while diving in it. The poetic tone, visuals and music. It's like a magic. Loved the sounds of guitar, clarinet, flute and violins in this. Great music work by the musicians. It's really a rare thing when you feel you are gonna love a movie at first few minutes but this is one of that kind. When you see Vinayakan and Dileesh walking and talking in first few minutes, you get that feeling. And it never drops till the end. Priyamvada, Roshan and those few but great actors are doing a remarkable job.

A good movie after a long time.
sanusudhakar7 June 2019
Thottapam handles not just the usual emotions of a couple falling in love but also the angles and the mixed emotions that a father goes through from his perspective. A definite feel good movie.

The direction has been brilliant and the actors have all done justice to their roles. I hope this becomes a benchmark for many more movies to come in the malayalam film industry.

Ps. I hope this gets Vinayakan another award to his kitty.

Not a movie it's a beautiful poem
sharathdevdas5 June 2019
Being a Vinayakan fan, undoubtedly this was a hugely anticipated movie for me, but taking that bias away the performers delivered makes you feel the pain, those moments of laughter, nostalgia come pouring out. As audience you can live through the characters emotions....hat-off to the director who handled the subject in a matured way

Good plot, great acting bad script and direction
emanumn28 March 2020
Good casting and of course the acting is great as well, by Thottappan & Sarah. But, too many lose plots, for example, how does someone have a mobile phone in 1995/06 (Spadikam releasing year) in a rural place in Kerala? And not sure how the actress understand the truth as well.

I think this craft will be studied for a long time
abhay-aj052 September 2020
First Malayalam movie I've seen, and I'm embarrassed to have not explored these earlier. Vinayakan, a huge fan, and than after this I saw him in some comic roles, and he nailed that too, with such ease and flow, he has got that rhythm, like I cannot believe he is real, totally awed. I really liked this movie, for the immense depth and story, and the many things it shows about society, culture, and life, in general, and that too not directly, but in a subtle way, with great amount of intensity and intimacy.

Amazing movie...what a script and acting!
vaishakdevdas5 June 2019
Seeing such a beautiful movie after a long time in malayalam cinema. Every actor was excellent in their role. Its script was amazing and unique. I recommend to dubb or remake in other Indian languages.

Simple and touching story. All the actors performed extraordinarily, perfect casting.

Finest movie with finest artists
sanjithml22 June 2022
Watched this movie 2nd time. One of the finest movies in Malayalam industry.

Vinayakayan was undeniably the finest and the toughest actor as usual. He portrayed extraordinarily about his love for the family and Sara kochu.

Priyamvada, i am speechless about her debut. Brilliant performance.

Movie is a must watch for everyone and never ever miss it.

Good starting, bad ending...
vaibhavboby5 September 2020
The starting of the movie is great! But the ending goes sown in quality and it felt like they forgot to add somethings. Overall a great and entertaining movie but could have been a lot better.
