(Update: Cancelled) Lower Your Expectations From Dark Because Obviously It's Not Gonna Be as Good
Update: This show was canceled by Netflix like many other good and intriguing shows so they can go ahead and make the 10th Stranger Things and Squid Game season and the 5th Knives Out movie. Even though this season's idea and twists and turns weren't as interesting and mindblowing as Dark's, and as the season went on, you could absolutely predict and guess what it's all about, I still had faith in the creators and hope that the next season will be better and make the story more complex and not just rehashing an idea that's been told in many movies and shows before. Dark season one was great, but season 2 was a perfect masterpiece, that's why I had the hope that this will get better in the next season and the "point" of it all as many reviewers are looking for would be revealed and developed there. But that's Netflix for you, canceling intriguing and decent shows so they can hire Ryan Reynolds for the 6th Red Notice movie. (Not saying this show is that intriguing, but I still wanted to see how the story went and what it would become and how they would end it.)
Original review: So Dark is probably my top 5 favorite shows I have seen so far, so I kinda had some expectations from this show since the only reason I know it exists and the only reason I'm watching it, is because the creators of Dark are behind it.
Unfortunately, this show doesn't really manage to achieve the same thing Dark did, and so far with its finale's ending reveal, it doesn't seem like a new or mindblowing story.
But that's not to say the show or the story is bad or anything. This is just part one of the story and we'll have to wait and see what it's gonna turn into.
There are some great characters in there and the show does a good job of establishing each of them enough for us, but not enough to make you actually feel emotionally attached like you were with Dark's characters. Some romantic relationships don't really have chemistry and feel like contrived and Hollywood style of making two characters fall for each other.
But nevertheless, the story and the characters are good enough that keep you interested in the story and wanting to see more. They do a great job of hooking you in and throwing you into the world of the show and keeping each episode intriguing that you want to binge the whole show like I just did.
The production is just great and the CGI work is fine too and the acting is great as expected, and you can see that everyone actually cared about making a high-quality show, though the writing leaves a little bit to be desired and could've benefited from some revisions.
If we're being honest, Dark's plot wasn't and twists weren't that novel or original either and it was done to death, but what Dark managed to do was to take that idea which has been the plot of many many movies and shows since decades ago, and creating one of, if not the, best possible story with it in my opinion and be the best example of that idea. But with this show, I'm not too sure, and I think most people kind of hate this kind of plot (trying not to spoil what it's about) no matter what, and I didn't really feel like they were doing something different or novel with it, just a twist and reveal we've seen many times before. But knowing the writers I doubt that's all there is to the story and the plot is gonna get more complicated than what we've seen so far, so they might still do another Dark and create one of the best examples of this kind of plot, but we'll have to wait and see.
This show is also a little slow-burn and the pacing is not gonna be liked by everyone, especially people not fond of slow burns and dialogue. I personally didn't have that much of a problem with the pacing, but I can see many people not even finishing it because of the pacing. So if you're one of those people who dropped Andor (a show that's currently coming out) because of its pacing and prefer fast-paced and action-packed shows, you might not like this it might not be the show for you.
I personally enjoyed this show a lot, but from my experience with Dark, it's better you wait for the whole series to come out and binge all the seasons because you're gonna rewatch the show anyway since you'll forget about all of it in 2 years when the next season comes out, unless you don't want it spoiled for you. And I'm saying this since I believe this show is not as sophisticated or mindblowing as Dark yet, so it's not something you must drop everything and watch because it's the best next thing. So if you don't really care that much yet and you won't usually have stuff get spoiled for you, I recommend waiting for the next season to start watching the show because there are still a lot of unanswered questions and it's better to binge the whole show instead...
...But if you're gonna watch it, don't expect Dark and expect a new and different experience from that show because it's its own thing and it's better not to go expecting a mindblowing masterpiece.
