After years of working in Hollywood, Taika Waititi has lived through the classic biopic scene where a protagonist wakes up and immediately questions all of their life choices.
“What the fuck am I doing? Why am I doing this? For what reason? There’s no purpose and I’m getting nothing out of this,” Waititi said in an interview with IndieWire at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival. “And then we realize, ‘Oh, but the reason we do this is to help people in our community.’ To keep pulling each other up and supporting each other, that is the purpose. That’s the reason to be doing any of this.”
Though he has made headlines for being at the festival to premiere his long-awaited sports comedy “Next Goal Wins,” Waititi is also promoting the independent film “Frybread Face and Me” from writer-director Billy Luther, which he executive produced. The coming-of-age story...

Washington, April 11 (Ians) The US government has launched a $5 billion programme to accelerate the development of next-generation Covid-19 vaccines and treatments, according to media reports.
‘Project Next Gen’ would succeed ‘Operation Warp Speed’ with a mission to develop next-generation vaccines and therapies against newer and existing Covid variants, the Washington Post reported.
Operation Warp Speed, under then President Donald Trump, developed and distributed vaccines in the early days of the pandemic in 2020.
“While our vaccines are still very effective at preventing serious illness and death, they are less capable of reducing infections and transmission over time,” a spokesperson from the US Department of Health and Human Services (Hhs) was quoted as saying to the Post.
“New variants and loss of immunity over time could continue to challenge our healthcare systems in the coming years.”

This Star Trek: Picard article contains spoilers.
The easter egg game is afoot! As was true with Picard’s easter egg bonanza from a few weeks ago, episode 8, “Surrender,” uses callbacks and references in such a way that you can’t actually figure out how the plot would work without this stuff. We know that the final two episodes of Picard season 3 will surely be packed beyond belief with references and Trekkie surprises, but for now, in “Surrender,” the references pack a punch because they make the plot happen.
Here are the best easter eggs and references in episode 8:
Vadic Smoking on the Bridge
Although it’s possible this isn’t an intentional reference, Vadic smoking one of her dusty shapeshifter cigarettes on the bridge of the Titan might be a shout-out to The Wrath of Khan. In that movie, at the very start, there are signs on the...

Halfway between a black comedy and Hitchcockian psychodrama, HBO Max’s The Flight Attendant follows Cassie Bowden (Kaley Cuoco), a fun-loving flight attendant whose life spirals out of control after she wakes up next to a dead man. It’s also a story about addiction, confronting the past and how friendships bend or break under pressure, as in the case of Cassie and her co-worker Megan (Rosie Perez). Even though their onscreen friendship is sometimes on the rocks, the love is real between stars Cuoco (who also served as executive producer and is nominated for outstanding lead actress in a comedy) ...

Mumbai, May 23 (Ians) Delhi Capitals pace bowler Avesh Khan has revealed the praise he received from India and Royal Challengers Bangalore (Rcb) skipper Virat Kohli, whom he dismissed during their match in the Indian Premier League (Ipl) this season.
Not only did the 24-year-old DC bowler grab 14 wickets in eight games to help his team climb to the top of the table, he also got the prized wickets of Chennai Super Kings (Csk) skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Rcb's Kohli in the postponed Ipl-14 season.
"I spoke with Kohli during Ipl when DC played Rcb. He told me that I bowled well and should continue doing this," Khan told Cricket Next on Saturday.
The Indore-born pacer -- who emerged the joint second-highest wicket-taker in Ipl-14 with Rajasthan Royals' Chris Morris -- got the better of Dhoni in the second match of the season, sending the former India skipper back for a two-ball duck.

While many networks have been forthcoming with decisions for the bulk of their scripted series, Fox has been holding its cards close to its chest.
The network has now announced that 9-1-1, 9-1-1: Lone Star and The Resident will be a part of its 2021-22 TV schedule.
9-1-1 has been renewed for Season 5, Lone Star for Season 3, and The Resident for Season 5.
Of those shows, the 9-1-1 franchise was a lock to remain a part of the network's lineup next season.
While holding up very well, the Resident was on the bubble due to the limited slots on the network.
Both 9-1-1 and The Resident will be keeping their current slots in the fall, while Lone Star has been shifted to midseason.
Mondays this fall will consist of 9-1-1 and the Scott Foley-Teri Polo dramedy, The Big Leap.

The cast of Prodigal Son may not be ready to say goodbye to the beloved series, but they celebrated an impressive two-season run after Fox canceled it.
“What a trip. Playing Malcolm has been a joy and a privilege. The best cast on network TV and the most unique show around," Tom Payne wrote on Twitter shortly after the news broke.
He added, "We did it in style. Love to everyone who enjoyed it all along with us. And check out the last two eps! They Are Amazing."
Bellamy Young shared her own thoughts on the cancellation.

"I am, as you can imagine, heartbroken that we can’t keep telling this story. We’re gonna go out in Style tho- these last 2 eps are Fire. Love each of you.

Malcolm Bright can unfortunately add “abandonment issues” to his long list of troubles. Fox has cancelled Prodigal Son after two seasons, TVLine has learned, turning the May 18 season finale into a series ender.
Fox declined to comment, but a network insider tells TVLine that the decision to pull the plug on the dramatic thriller was an “incredibly difficult” one, adding, however, that Prodigal Son‘s viewership was just too small to justify bringing it back for a third season.

Network has also decided against “Blood Relative” pilot
Fox has decided not to move forward with two drama pilots, “Blood Relative” and an untitled drama that was to follow three kids as they tried to make a shot-for-shot remake of Steven Spielberg’s “The Goonies.”

The seven-part series will land on sister streamer Disney+ on Friday May 14 in the U.S. All episodes of the show will air at once following their linear transmission.
Bertram Van Munster and Elise Doganieri, who exec produce the show, told Deadline that they were excited with the digital opportunities. “It just gives us more places to see content. You can see it in the car, you can bring it on the plane, you can take it with you, wherever you are. It’s your schedule, not someone else’s schedule,” said Doganieri.
Race to the Center of the Earth pits four teams of three against one another in a sprint across the globe for a $1M prize. Each group will start from a different corner of the Earth – South America,...

A couple of things have caught our eye in February’s Netflix UK line-up, first, the German dystopian sci-fi Tribes of Europa. After the success of sci-fi series Dark, the streaming service invested in a bunch of new German-language series, including the mega-successful historical Barbarians. Tribes was among them, and tells the story of a group of siblings in 2074, separated after a global disaster that leaves Europe riven by warring factions. Also sounding like a good time is South Korean comedy Space Sweepers, about a spaceship crew tasked with cleaning up intergalactic trash.
There’s also the arrival of Parks and Recreation in full – perfect for a lockdown rewatch, new stand-up, all of The Vampire Diaries, and Jason “It’s a megalodon” Statham in The Meg.

If you’re looking for sure bets at the Sundance Film Festival, the smart money says you should look to the documentary programming. The festival’s lineup of narrative films, after all, is always hit-or-miss: For every “Minari” or “The Farewell” or “Beasts of the Southern Wild” that comes out of Park City to become a hit in theaters or on the awards circuit, there are dozens of movies that disappear, or that find that the rapturous reaction they received at 7,000 feet is considerably more tepid at sea level.
But Sundance’s documentaries rarely disappoint. Almost every year, more than half the nonfiction films that make the shortlist in the Oscars Best Documentary Feature category are films that premiered at Sundance — and when this year’s shortlist is announced on Feb. 9, there’s no question that it will be filled with Sundance’s Class of 2020.

A series by Christopher James investigating the 'Gay Best Friend' trope
Both Madonna and Rupert Everett made some key mistakes in "The Next Best Thing."Gay men love their one named divas, and with good reason. Madonna is in the upper echelon of gay icons. Her outspoken nature, incredible discography, ever-evolving persona and culture-defining fashion have given her a remarkably enduring legacy that should be lauded. Still, every gay icon has a few flops in their closet.
The Next Best Thing has been virtually wiped from the world. Unavailable from all streaming platforms (including transactional video on demand services), in order to gaze upon this Sodom and Gomorrah of filmmaking I had to order a used DVD from an Amazon seller. The Next Best Thing both did and did not disappoint. It's an epically misguided trainwreck not just in scope (the film takes place over a 7 year period) but in...

Star Trek: Picard‘s second season was delayed by Covid-19, but things seem to be back on track as production is scheduled to start in just over a month from now on February 1st. The rookie run wasn’t without its problems, but aside from a couple of rubbish episodes in the middle and the questionable decision to make Picard a synth in the finale, I enjoyed it. The show was a real nostalgia trip for The Next Generation fans, reuniting the titular captain with Riker, Troi, Data and former Borg Hugh. Season 2 sounds as if it’s going to continue in a similar fashion and we now have a decent idea of at least one new crew member.
Last January, Patrick Stewart appeared on The View, which is hosted by Whoopi Goldberg, who played enigmatic bartender Guinan on The Next Generation. During the show, Stewart invited Goldberg to reprise the role,...

As she prepares to smash an Oscar record, the great actor talks about drawing on her own suffering, missing her violent mother – and surviving the Hollywood ‘hamburger machine’
Ellen Burstyn is struggling to make herself heard above the sirens that are screeching across the city. “I live on a road that’s very popular with police cars and ambulances,” she says down the line from New York. She had been trying to tell me about the Oscars when she was interrupted by the racket. If she is nominated in March – and, with the odds of her winning best supporting actress currently at 5/1, she almost certainly will be – this would make her the Academy’s oldest acting nominee, having turned 88 this month. “At the moment, it’s Chris Plummer,” she says excitedly. “But I would beat him by 42 days! What a great crown that would be to wear.”

The 16th season of ABC’s The Bachelorette ended Tuesday with Tayshia finding love… or something close to it. The second part of the reality dating competition’s finale delivered a 1.2 in the adults 18-49 demographic and 5.24 million viewers, matching Monday’s part one and topping the night in the demo.
ABC won the night in both viewers and the demo with its big two-hour finale, which was followed by a special episode of Supermarket Sweep which matched season lows.
It was game show night at CBS with a special primetime edition of The Price Is Right, which nearly matched The Bachelorette‘s audience. Fellow special Let’s Make a Deal (0.6, 4.23M) followed.
Fox aired the two-hour series finale of NeXt, which averaged a 0.2 in the demo matching Monday night’s penultimate episode. The first hour netted 1.08 million viewers, dropping in the second hour to 965,000 viewers.

In just a couple of weeks, one of the most popular shows on the planet will return to our screens when season 3 of Cobrai Kai arrives on Netflix, marking the first run of episodes to be produced by the streaming service after they acquired the rights to the Karate Kid sequel series. The first two runs dominated the most-watched list and turned Cobra Kai into the most popular show in the entire content library when they were added back in August, and the brand new installments with a much bigger budget are expected to fare even better.
William Zabka and Ralph Macchio renewed their rivalry as Johnny Lawrence and Daniel Larusso, but several more familiar faces from the Karate Kid franchise have dropped by throughout the course of the series, including Tony O’Dell and the late Rob Garrison as Jimmy and Tommy, while season 3 sees The Karate Kid Part II...

WarnerMedia’s awkwardly revealed re-invention of Hollywood’s release windows has stirred anger among filmmakers and their reps, with fists clenched and threats exchanged. But then there’s Steven Soderbergh, the idiosyncratic filmmaker who reminds us that he is above it all.
Soderbergh’s response to industry discord is to sign up as co-producer of the next Oscar show, whatever that may be (more below), and to join the streaming line with a semi-improvised HBO Max drama titled Let Them All Talk (some critics have retitled it Let Them All Nap).
Throughout his 30-year career, Soderbergh has careened between moods and settings, from Erin Brockovich to Magic Mike, from Contagion to Full Frontal. He followed Sex, Lies, and Videotape, his first hit, with a period drama sexily titled Kafka about an paranoid insurance clerk in Prague.
True to form, Soderbergh “retired” for four years around 2012, then materialized once again with a self-financed,...

Coming off the previous night’s “Men Tell All” special, ABC’s The Bachelorette delivered a 1.0 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic and 4.26 million viewers Tuesday, matching the special and ticking down a tenth from last week’s episode. After a recap of the season, The Voice crowned its winner for Season 19 and climbed two tenths, netting the night’s largest audience.

Big Sky wrapped its successful fall run in winning fashion.
The 2020 closer of the new thriller drew 3.9 million viewers and a 0.6 rating in the demo -- up a tenth week-to-week.
Before that, The Bachelorette slipped a tenth week-to-week, delivering 4.3 million viewers and a 1.1 demo rating.
This was enough to help it beat the final of The Voice in the demo, which netted a 0.9 rating along with 7.1 million viewers.
While the singing competition remains on the downside, it is still drawing decent ratings for NBC.
Over on Fox, Cosmos did 1.2 million viewers and a 0.2 rating.
Terminal drama series, Next delivered just 862,000 viewers and a CW-Esque 0.1 rating.
The canceled show will air three episodes next week:
One on Monday, followed by the two-part finale on Tuesday. Yep, Fox does not want to take the show into 2021.
Who can blame them with those ratings, huh?

Thanks to Covid postponements, we ended up with another Tuesday night football game this week. While Dallas Cowboys fans may be unhappy with the result, Fox certainly isn’t. The NFL game was one hell of a ratings upgrade from last week’s Tuesday primetime lineup of “Cosmos: Possible Worlds” and “Next.” The Baltimore Ravens win provided stiff competition for the rest of broadcast television, with ABC’s “Big Sky” being among the biggest sufferers week to week. The future of Star Trek on the big screen remains shrouded in uncertainty, with Noah Hawley recently admitting that his movie wasn’t going to happen in the immediate future after Paramount placed the project on the back burner, while nobody involved in the Kelvin timeline seems to have a clue what’s going on, despite the willingness of the cast to return.
Luckily for fans of the long-running sci-fi franchise, though, Star Trek is in rude health on the small screen. Executive producer Alex Kurtzman has mapped out adventures until 2027 at least that encompass everything from Discovery and Picard to the animated Lower Decks, while spinoff Brave New Worlds starts filming next summer and the kid-friendly Prodigy will debut on Nickelodeon in a few months.

The Bachelorette took a small stumble from last week’s numbers but still managed to pull out a ratings win Tuesday in primetime. ABC’s romantic reality competition delivered a 1.2 in the adults 18-49 demographic and 4.25 million viewers. The two-hour episode led into the freshman dramatic thriller Big Sky, which climbed a tenth from last week’s series premiere and added more eyes to its audience total.
The pair gave ABC the overall victory in the demo.
At NBC, The Voice fell two-tenths in the demo from last week’s Tuesday edition, but the reality singing competition was on par with Monday night’s episode of medical drama Transparent, which rounded out the night holding steady.
CBS was tops among broadcasters in viewers, with NCIS and FBI (0.8, 8.20M) nearly matching last week’s numbers, with the former drawing the night’s biggest audience. FBI: Most Wanted...

Focused on Latin America and U.S. Hispanic markets, last week’s MipCancun Online Plus market-conference was a boutique affair, attracting 600 delegates from 500 companies and 44 countries.
Far more than MipTV and even Mipcom, however, MipCancun’s lineup of speakers marked a virtual who’s who of relevant leading industry figures, led by the top executives for Latin America at companies shaping the region’s film-tv future: Netflix’s Francisco Ramos; Disney Plus’ Leonardo Aranguibel; ViacomCBS Intl. Studios and Networks Americas’ J.C. Acosta; Amazon Prime Video’s Pablo Iacoviello; NBCUniversal Telemundo’s Marcos Santana; and Sony Pictures Television’s Ana Bond.
Wrapping Friday, 2020’s MipCancun kicked off on Nov. 17 as Disney Plus launched across Latin America. That seems appropriate. One subject dominated most keynote and panels, one way or another: The impact of the still ongoing Ott revolution on Latin America’s production sector. Below, find 10 takeaways from MipCancun 2020’s conference.

Daniel Fienberg: Most years, when critics gather to discuss the highlights and lowlights of fall TV, the conversation at least initially revolves around the launch of the traditional broadcast season in the aftermath of the Emmys.
Little known fact: This is not a normal year.
Thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, which torpedoed pilot season in the spring, this has been an autumn almost completely devoid of new broadcast shows. Since Fox’s Filthy Rich and Next were both pre-covid holdovers (and both were bad and have been cancelled already) and NBC’s Connected… hardly felt like a real show at all,...
